Chapter 341: For His Lady and Little Girl
Chapter 341: For His Lady and Little Girl
Edward rented an apartment unit one station away from Xu International. The place was quite expensive but, the housing benefits he received from the company helped to lower the burden.
Calix dropped Edward off at the pedestrian walkway a few minutes later. He didn’t join the long line of vehicles pulling up by the dividers.
The station entrance was around a five-minute walk from the spot. Calix saw people coming out and going in from there, all having different destinations in mind. Other passersby also rushed on the paved pathway.
"Thank you, Mr. Chauffer. See you tomorrow."
Edward unlatched the seatbelt. His whole face was beaming just for having his boss drive him to the subway station.
Lucky! He didn’t have to walk among the crowd just to get to the station.
"That’s one hundred dollars. Cash only."
Calix offered his palm toward Edward, waiting for his payment. His words earned a scoff from the younger man.
"One hundred for a three-minute ride? It’s daylight robbery!"
Shrugging, Calix drew a smirk on his lips, "Well, you’re riding a customized car so, that’s justified."
Edward stared at Calix deadpanly. He hated that he couldn’t refute what his boss had just said. His bum suddenly tingled as he recalled this car worth hundreds of thousands despite appearing low-key on the exterior.
"Bye."
Grabbing his backpack, Edward hurriedly alighted the luxury vehicle. Calix burst out laughing, amused by the younger man’s annoyed look.
"Be careful ah! I don’t want my assistant to make the headlines!"
"Of what? Of being robbed by his own boss?"
Edward closed the car door. Wearing a disinterested look, he waved at Calix before heading to the station entrance. The older man slowly started driving again, being careful with the packed traffic.
The huge traffic pushed Calix to lower his driving speed. He occasionally threw his gaze out of the windows, seeing the passing scenery.
The dazzling sun still brightly showered its light on the early summer day. The colorful flowers planted along the roads danced under the clear sky.
As the temperature continued to rise, people had been opting for light clothes. More passersby also started wearing hats and using umbrellas to combat the heat.
The sunset was predicted around seven in the evening. Calix still had less than two hours before the city skyline darkened completely.
’Oh... I’m later than expected.’
Glancing at the touchscreen dashboard, Calix lamented the loss of half an hour because he got distracted by Chase’s information earlier. He tapped one finger on the steering wheel, still thinking about Evelyn and this scumbag.
’She should start being suspicious of him now.’
Evelyn’s surprise visit meant she was aware of what Calix did secretly but, there was a positive side as well. He believed his younger sister’s head wouldn’t be in the clouds much anymore.
’Urgh... Dad would kill me if he knew. ’
Calix shuddered as he thought about Andrian finding out what he was concealing.
Their father was more protective over Evelyn because she was the only girl in their family. No trashy man could leave unscathed if they dared hurt her over immoral things like infidelity.
Shaking his head, Calix racked his brain for plausible excuses. Sooner or later, the issue of Evelyn being cheated on by her secret boyfriend would reach their family’s ears.
"Haa... I’ll just run away ah."
Calix exhaled a deep sigh, unable to come up with good excuses. Perhaps, this was the perfect time to bring Leslie and Calliope to their planned summer retreat.
Haha... if he was simply a shareholder, he could laze around without ever going to the company ah.
"...huh?"
CEO Xu’s eyes were drawn to the roadside, more specifically to a florist. All thoughts about his father and younger sister vanished to the back of his mind.
The quaint-sized store was nestled between bigger shops but, the colorful flower arrangements caught people’s attention easily. Two people headed out with a flower bouquet and a flower basket each.
As an idea crossed Calix’s mind, he slowed down before turning on the blinkers. He pulled up by the sidewalk once he got the chance.
"Flowers for my lady and little girl~"
Singing to himself, Calix rushed to the flower store. The wind breezed through his dark locks, fluttering his bangs slightly. The sun added a glow to his already beaming countenance.
Calix was pleasantly surprised to know the florist also sold homemade chocolates. He got one chocolate box each for Leslie and Calliope together with flowers, knowing full well the mother-daughter duo loved sweets.
"Thank you."
Calix carefully yet firmly carried the two small bouquets with chocolate boxes out of the flower shop. His impulsive purchase took less than ten minutes.
Humming to an upbeat tune, Calix was eager to see how Leslie and Calliope looked once they received these surprise gifts.
Calix reached Graceville Manor in another half an hour due to the traffic. He made sure to keep Chase’s information inside the briefcase before stepping out of the car. He smilingly looked at the two bouquets in his right arm.
"Red and pink, perfect."
Calix picked three stalks of red roses for Leslie while Calliope got three stalks of pink roses. Both bouquets were wrapped in cream-colored papers with pastel purple ribbons.
Unable to hold back his excitement, Calix hummed as he walked to the front door. He had just stepped into the entryway when his ears caught the faint echoes of someone’s crying.
"...isn’t that Poppy? From the lounge?"
Wondering what was happening, Calix hurriedly kicked off his shoes. He didn’t forget to slip into his home slippers. The child’s crying grew louder as he half-ran to the lounge.
"Waa... Mama... Poppy is sorry..."
"Hehehe, nothing ah, Poppy... Don’t cry, Mama’s darling..."
A dumbfounded Calix saw Calliope crying in Leslie’s lap as the lady tried to comfort her. The mother and daughter sat on the couch.
Aunt Wendy and Mrs. An were also there. All three adults noticed the man’s appearance.
"Oh, you’re home, Calix..." Leslie smiled at Calix. She patted Calliope’s back, "Poppy, your papa is back now... What do you say?"
Hiccuping, Calliope raised her small head from Leslie’s lap. Her teary eyes blurred the image of Calix approaching her.
"Sob... sob... Papa!"
Calix blinked, still confused with the situation. Putting down the bouquets and the briefcase, he asked, "Why Poppy cries ah?"
Leslie stifled her laughter while Aunt Wendy and Mrs. An smiled in helplessness. Calliope was still sobbing, her chubby cheeks stained with tears.
