Chapter 338: He Could Make a Choice Too

Chapter 338: He Could Make a Choice Too

Realizing what had just come out of her mouth, Evelyn hastily pressed her lips. A pin-drop silence voided the rest of the noises in the room.

...what did she just say?

Damn!

A douse of guilt washed over a part of Evelyn’s anger as she stared blankly at Calix. A wave of tremors reverberated from her heart, cementing the weight of the situation in her mind.

"S-second Brother, I didn’t mean..."

How could she talk about her second brother’s painful past just because she was mad at him? She witnessed it firsthand how that shrew ruined him!

"Eve, calm down."

Calix raised one of his hands, still wearing a casual look on his face. He acted as if none of Evelyn’s words stung him.

Softening his voice, Calix said, "Be careful with him, Eve. You can be angry at me as long as you want but, please think over my words."

Calix didn’t intend to hit back even though Evelyn brought up a tormented part of his life. He acknowledged what he did right now was hurting his younger sister. She simply reacted on reflex to defend herself.

"B-but, I just..."

Evelyn was still frozen, unable to say anything. Her pupils tightened and widened alternatively. Her furious and tough facade from earlier crumbled within minutes because of her own slip-out.

His gaze hooded, Calix continued talking. He kept his voice low, "I won’t ever wish something like that occur to you, Eve. But... if it still happens, don’t keep it to yourself."

Evelyn sensed sincerity beneath Calix’s advice. Her heart tightened between fury and remorse.

Despite still being mad at Calix, guilt replaced a piece of Evelyn’s anger, more so when her elder brother didn’t react to her with the same fury.

"...I’ll go now."

Out of shame, Evelyn turned around and hurriedly ran toward the door. Her wrathful image earlier changed to a meek one all because of one single mistake. She hastily left without looking at Calix even once.

Bam!

Evenly came like a raging storm and left like a passing breeze. Calix didn’t know whether to feel relieved or not.

’I hope she’ll be careful.’

Even though Calix didn’t expect Evelyn to know about his interference this soon, perhaps this was for the best. He believed his younger sister would start to be vigilant around that man.

The clock kept ticking but Calix remained sitting on the couch. Without him realizing it, he gradually zoned out from reality as Evelyn’s words replayed in his mind.

"Don’t make everyone a cheater just because that witch cheated on you!"

Frowning, Calix’s brows wrinkled in displeasure. A faint sense of ache tingled within him, presumably from a hidden part deep in his heart.

That witch.

Aria Jiang. The one Xander tried to push him to be together with again.

’I didn’t remember much about her to be honest but... it’s still irritating.’

Calix had been an item with the lady from the Jiang family from high school. They continued their relationship despite having to separate when they pursued their tertiary-level studies.

Calix and Aria managed to keep their romance strong, giving off the illusion of how well-matched and in love they were with each other.

Unfortunately, the one decade of illusions shattered more than seven years ago.

’She may not always be a cheater but, she indeed cheated on me.’

Closing his eyes, Calix pinched his temple as a sigh escaped his mouth. Remembering the hurtful memories despite being vague would still bother him.

Calix caught Aria cheating on him not with one man but, two! She had been hiding her vicious act for over one year.

That alone was enough to break their long-term relationship even though Aria pleaded with Calix, swearing to change. She even blamed it on her impulsive young blood.

"You chose to cheat, Aria. I can make a choice too. I’m breaking up with you."

Aria only had herself to blame. This was not one drunken night mistake. She was sober as she continued the affairs, her brain had the full capability to think for herself.

Yet, she still sneaked around and spread her legs for other men.

The Jiang family tried to get Calix to forgive Aria but, the Xu family steadfastly defended his action. Old Madam Xu and Harper declared they wouldn’t let someone unfaithful like Aria enter their family.

Calix might get rid of Aria as soon as he discovered her infidelity but, it didn’t mean he was not hurting. From a cheerful and laidback man, he turned into a gloomy and raging workaholic.

Without saying, his family especially his grandmother was deeply worried about him[01]. After all, she herself had experienced being cheated on before[02].

’Enough. I better not think about it.’

Shaking his head, Calix slowly opened his eyes. He didn’t want to bring up what he had forgotten.

Calix believed the car accident that put him in a long coma dulled his memories about Aria and the piercing pain she had caused him. Thus, he was unwilling to make them return.

His life was a thousandfold better than before.

’Oh, I should call home. What are they doing now, en?’

Leslie’s smiling face was conjured in Calix’s mind as Calliope’s cheerful laughter rang in his ears. Chuckling to himself, his tensed countenance brightened up as he remembered his wife and daughter.

Rising to his feet, Calix walked away from the seating area. He leaned his hip against the edge of the work desk as he tapped the screen of his personal phone. He smilingly called Leslie’s number.

"Hello~ Calix."

Leslie’s mellow voice traveled from the end of the line, reaching Calix’s ears before the sound inevitably softened his taut heart.

"Leslie, what are you doing?"

"Hehe, I just had lunch... with Poppy. Wanna talk to her?"

"Hahaha, how many bowls she ate today?"

Calix might not see it himself but, the way he smiled and the twinkle in his eyes were enough to tell anyone of his feelings.

A colorful spring had thawed out his long winter days.
