Chapter 337: His Reason Sounded Shallow Despite How Truthful It Was
Calix regretfully left for the office after having breakfast with Leslie and Calliope. He had never felt this reluctant to go to work. He promised to return home as soon as he could.
"Don’t you need to earn money to care for us? Go to work ah..."
"Hehehe~ Papa, come back early and let’s play!"
Calix’s words earned two different reactions, a playful chiding from his wife while his daughter welcomed his early return. Amused, he laughed all the way from the door to the car.
Fortunately, the morning traffic was bearable. Calix intended to finish the important tasks as many as he could before clocking out early.
"Good morning, CEO Xu."
"Boss Xu, when did you return? Had fun with your wife?"
"CEO Xu, when can we meet Mrs. Xu?"
Calix’s return after one week of absence was greeted with various questions from his staff. Most of them inquired about his trip with his wife as per what they heard from the rumors.
Calix playfully replied to the gossipy employees, saying he didn’t want his beloved wife to meet them lest they badmouthed him in front of her. His response earned laughter from the staff.
Andrian still came to the office even though Calix had returned. But, he didn’t stay for long today.
The middle-aged man joined the morning Monday meeting before calling a few heads of departments to his office. There were a few things he needed to discuss with them and Calix.
Then, Andrian quickly clocked out at noon as soon as Harper appeared.
"Don’t slack off, my son. Your father here will go out with my lovely wife."
Calix clicked his tongue when Andrian came boasting at him before he left with Harper. The husband and wife wanted to have lunch together before going on a date.
In actuality, it was fortunate that Andrian left early. Calix unknowingly dodged from being eaten alive by his father.
Why?
When Calix mourned missing out on having a meal with Leslie and Calliope, a fuming Evelyn came storming into his office. A panicked Edward followed from behind, never expecting the superstar’s sudden visit today.
"Second Brother, we have to talk."
Evelyn hissed under her breath, the eyes hidden behind her wide sunglasses glowering with anger. The echoes of her boots reverberated in the spacious CEO’s office, amplified by the marble floor.
With just one look, Calix could tell Evelyn had found out what he attempted to do behind her back.
This was not Evelyn’s first appearance at the CEO’s office of Xu International. She used to come here a few times in the past, either to drag Calix for lunch or to complain about her work.
Evelyn often used Calix’s private elevator, starting from the secret hallway to avoid being seen. Even though the staff was aware of her identity, she tried to be careful with her movements.
Putting down his ballpen, Calix calmly stared back at Evelyn before shifting his eyes to Edward. The younger man stood not far from the door, seemingly avoiding being caught in the crossfire between the two siblings.
"You," Calix pointed at Edward. Narrowing his eyes, he saw the chief assistant’s mouth had traces of sauce in one corner, "Go out. Continue your lunch."
"Yessir."
Edward left without turning back. Instead of being a victim in the sibling’s impending war, he better return to his piping hot bowl of spicy beef noodle soup.
"Second Brother, stop looking at the door!"
Calix peeled his eyes away from the closed door, back to Evelyn’s raging countenance. He swore he could see steam puffing out from his younger sister’s ears and nostrils.
"Yes, I’m looking at you now," replied Calix, refraining from rolling his eyes. Standing up, he gestured to the seating area, "Sit down, won’t you?"
Evelyn gritted her teeth. Calix’s nonchalant look irritated her already blazing heart.
She marched toward the seating area, the stomping of her boots muffled by the plush carpet under the couches. Her silky long hair and the hem of her dress fluttered around her.
"You came earlier than I expected," Calix spoke casually as if Evelyn’s wrath didn’t affect him. Folding one of his shirt sleeves, he headed to the couch, "Did Manager Yin tell you herself or did you catch her in the act?"
Evelyn threw herself on the two-seater couch. She glared at Calix whose composure remained.
"Why are you meddling in my affairs? You eavesdropped me and forced my staff to do your bidding? What the hell is wrong with you?!"
Evelyn fired her anger even before Calix sat on the couch opposite hers. Her chest heaved up and down, manifesting the overflowing lava of her anger.
Evelyn had been on guard from the moment Calix caught her talking about her boyfriend to Manager Yin. Even though her second brother rarely interfered with her private life, she still wanted to be careful.
It turned out, he had started!
Leaning on the couch, Calix crossed one leg over the other. He was already prepared to receive Evelyn’s wrath as soon as she found out. After all, he did try to intervene in her private life.
There were boundaries prohibited from being crossed even within a close-knit family. Their father and mother had taught the siblings the importance of respecting privacies.
Exhaling a sigh, Calix uttered without looking away from Evelyn, "I’m worried about you, Eve. You’re a grown woman but, you’re still my younger sister."
Calix knew how shallow his reason sounded despite being truthful. But, what else he should say? Evelyn would only be madder if he said he heard of a prophecy of her being cheated on by that scumbag.
Evelyn scoffed, too enraged to think rationally behind her second brother’s words. She spat out, "I know what I’m doing. If you’re worried because I haven’t introduced him to our family, don’t be. We’re still learning about each other. I’ll bring him home when he’s ready."
"Eve..."
"There’s one more thing."
Evelyn abruptly cut Calix off, not giving him a chance to continue. Clenching her fists hard, her long nails dug into her palms.
"Don’t insinuate as if he’s a cheater. I know what you’ve told my manager. You warned her to be wary of him, isn’t it?"
Frowning, Calix said nothing. It seemed like Evelyn had caught almost everything or all about what he had just told Manager Yin yesterday.
"There’s a possibility, Eve. You didn’t know everything about him yet, don’t you?"
"Second Brother!"
Evelyn jumped to her feet, her slender figure towering before Calix who remained sitting on the couch. Her brother’s words hit her sore spot because it was the truth.
"You might appear cold on the outside so people don’t easily approach you but, you have the habit of easily trusting them once they get on your good side," Calix uttered tiredly.
This side of Evelyn always made Calix worry, especially because of how clashing it was.
Evelyn lowered her chin, sensing how the fire of her wrath flared out to her entire body. Sucking in a sharp breath, once again she stared at Calix.
"Don’t make everyone a cheater just because that witch cheated on you!"
Calix sharpened his gaze, never expecting Evelyn to bring up his past in the heat of her anger.
