Chapter 311: Trust in His Power to Clear up Her Messes
Leslie exchanged her new number with Rowan and Bianca on the first night they met at the Xu family’s ancestral home[01]. She did it after convincing herself to get to know them better.
After all, Leslie assumed she could forgive them on Charlene’s behalf. Never did she expect her anticipation to come crumbling down the very next second.
Soon, Leslie learned the extent of misery Charlene was forced to endure throughout her entire pregnancy[02]. The helpless young lady even attempted to end herself!
Knowing how Rowan and Bianca turned a blind eye toward their eldest daughter’s torment disgusted Leslie to the core. She cut every chance of reconciliation, unable to stomach herself to be around them.
"I didn’t block them... I just ignore their calls and messages..."
Leslie told Calix what happened when Calliope was bathing. They sat on the couch in the former’s bedroom, vaguely listening to the sound of water splashing from the washroom.
"Want me to tell them anything?" asked Calix, not surprised by Leslie’s reluctance to keep in contact with the Li spouses.
Calix was slightly baffled to receive a call from Rowan because the middle-aged man rarely contacted him. After he picked up the call earlier, Rowan subtly inquired about Leslie.
Calix simply said he was busy doing his own stuff. Rowan didn’t press further, much to his relief. The call ended in less than two minutes.
Leslie pursed her lips, unsure how she should respond to Calix. Despite wanting the Li family to pay for what they had done to Charlene, she was not well-versed in planning revenge.
"...I don’t know, really," uttered Leslie, sounding a little disheartened. She gazed at Calix with worries swirling in her eyes, "They’ll surely hear about Calliope... once we announce her existence, right?"
"They will, including the old hag. They’ll wonder about her origins."
Calix replied with a firm nod, understanding what Leslie was fearful about. Placing a palm on her back, he tried to channel some reassurance to her.
"Leslie, are you worried about any possible repercussions?"
Quietly looking at him, Leslie was entranced by Calix’s mellow voice and soft gaze. A sense of safety enveloped her as she felt him gently stroking her back.
"I do... even a simple matter of blocking them... I’m worried about Irene... She’ll get stuck in this issue no matter what..."
Leslie had the urge to simply block Rowan and Bianca’s numbers but, abruptly doing something like that might alert them. Thus, she ended up ignoring the calls and messages for now.
Even if Leslie replied to Rowan and Bianca, it was always with the same excuse of her being busy or tired.
"This is not the right choice, I know... but... I’m not sure..."
Unable to finish the rest of her words, Leslie lowered her gaze. She couldn’t help but feel how inadequate she was, ashamed to bother Calix with something so insignificant as this.
Calix smiled in helplessness. Scooting himself closer to Leslie, he extended his hand from her back to wrap her shoulders – to embrace her.
Instead of being hesitant like usual, he followed what his heart whispered to himself.
The sudden hug surprised Leslie but, she didn’t push Calix away. She let her head lay on his chest, silently listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
Strangely, a part of her fear melted away as she nestled in his embrace.
"Lean on me, won’t you?"
Calix’s whisper echoed above Leslie’s head. His thumb circled on her shoulder as he enveloped her small hands with his other palm.
"Leslie, I know how uncanny our marriage started but... please, rely on me. You don’t owe me explanations behind every one of your worries, just... know that you can depend on me. Always."
Leslie blinked, feeling how her eyes welled with tears. She didn’t mistake the genuine affection and concern in Calix’s voice as he continued comforting her.
"...what if I make a wrong choice?"
Leslie’s voice was barely a whisper as the thought of committing a mistake frightened her. She wanted to tilt up her head, looking straight into Calix’s eyes but, she didn’t dare.
Calix’s chuckled, his tone lacing with amusement. He replied in between his laughter, "Trust in your husband’s power to clear up your messes ah."
Stunned, Leslie finally looked up. Mischief glinted in Calix’s eyes, followed by his signature smirk. Unable to hold herself back, she burst out laughing.
"Hehe, sorry... I don’t want to talk too much... about them actually..."
Smiling sheepishly, Leslie didn’t know why this conversation gradually became a heart-to-heart talk. She initially only mentioned why she ignored Rowan and Bianca’s calls.
Calix snickered, staring back at Leslie with a meaningful gaze. He loosened his arm around her albeit reluctantly.
"You and Calliope will remain safe, Leslie. They can’t do anything to you both. And, there’s something I wanna say."
Leslie didn’t respond verbally to Calix, only waiting for him to resume talking.
"I’ve talked more about the Li family with my dad and Edward. The first plan is to aim at their money-making business but, I have a better idea now. We’ll give them a double blow."
"What is it?"
Leslie unknowingly held her breath, wondering what kind of plan Calix had in mind.
"Corruption. A man like Geoffrey won’t follow laws. He definitely has his own dark secrets related to the company."
Leslie was stunned, immediately getting the picture of Calix’s revised plan. She silently nodded, "...yeah, you’re right."
Leslie didn’t know Geoffrey personally but, she knew such a crooked man like him wasn’t a law-abiding citizen.
"The plan is still in the initial stage. We need to be meticulous with every aspect. For now, just block them. Don’t let them bother with your peace ah. I’ll handle it if they come for me."
Leslie was aware Irene might ask her if she learned about this matter from Rowan and Bianca. If that were to happen, she had to prepare the teenager for the possibility of her cutting ties with the Li family.
"Okay, I’ll do that. If Irene..."
"Mama! Papa! Poppy all clean now!"
Calliope’s yelling interrupted Leslie and Calix’s conversation. They turned to look at the washroom, finding a beaming little dumpling clad in a frilly mint green pajamas looking very happy.
