Chapter 310: Wall of Flowers
Chapter 310: Wall of Flowers
The family of three spent a fulfilling time in the backyard that early morning.
Calix ran one lap around the lake before hurriedly returning to Leslie and Calliope. He carried the little dumpling over his shoulders, taking her to see the lake.
Not long after, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond came to deliver breakfast to the deck. Without wasting time, they enjoyed the porridge, steamed buns and soy milk under the morning sun.
The group of painters arrived ten minutes before the appointed time. They let Calix join them after being asked by the man.
When the craftsmen transferred their equipment and cans of paints into the empty bedroom, Calix changed his clothes into a worn-out T-shirt and loose pants. He also wore a plain hairband, avoiding his fringes from sticking to his sweaty forehead later.
"Stay with Mama, en? Papa has work to do."
Calix patted Calliope’s head twice before entering the empty bedroom.
The little dumpling watched him disappear behind the door, wondering what he wanted to do. She was also a bit sad because she wanted to play more with her papa.
"Papa wants to paint Poppy’s room..." Leslie smiled at the sight of Calliope’s disheartened look, "He’ll play with Poppy later... Wanna read some books with Mama?"
Calliope shook her head, hugging the toy Mimo close to her chest. Looking at Leslie, she asked, "Mama, can we watch a princess movie?"
The hopeful tone in Calliope’s voice won Leslie’s heart. Stroking her daughter’s head, she nodded, "Okay... Which one Poppy wanna watch?"
As Calix and the men were busy in the room, Leslie and Calliope watched the movie in the second-floor lounge. The little dumpling picked her favorite cartoon of a knight princess rescuing her kingdom.
Leslie’s focus when accompanying Calliope was disturbed by two new messages. She replied nothing to them as how she did this morning and several days ago.
’They sound more desperate.’
Shutting the phone off, Leslie threw the sleek metal under a throw pillow. She rarely used the phone anyway.
Before noon, Calix and the men walked out of the room, looking exhausted. Uncle Raymond led the painters downstairs to have lunch. Calix approached Leslie and Calliope who were now playing with puzzles.
"Papa! Hehe, your cheek."
Calliope perked up as soon as she saw Calix. She pointed to the man’s left cheek.
"Oh? Did I get some paint on me?"
Calix brushed his thumb over his cheek, sensing something was sticking there. He didn’t notice it when washing his hands in the washroom.
"A little bit... to your nose..." Leslie chuckled, also seeing the paint spotted by Calliope, "Why is it yellow paint? Doesn’t... the color blush pink?"
"Oh... haha, I’m doing something. Well, I’ll wash it off later," Calix wiped his sweaty forehead with his sleeve, smiling sheepishly, "We’ll continue after lunch. Have you two eaten?"
"Isn’t it too tiring?" asked Leslie back, coming up with a different inquiry altogether. She didn’t press about her unanswered question earlier.
"Hehe, it’s nothing much ah. Here, here, let’s have lunch."
Under Calix’s insistence, Leslie and Calliope followed him downstairs. Soon, he rejoined the group of craftsmen to continue painting the walls. At the same time, Leslie and Calliope retreated to the bedroom to take a nap.
None of them expected to see the surprise prepared by Calix later in the evening.
"Poppy~ Leslie~ Come and see this!"
Leslie and Calliope were reading storybooks when a beaming Calix came knocking on the door. The time had crossed over six.
"Have everyone left?"
Leslie heard movements from the hallway, followed by the men’s chattering. The sound was quite audible because Calliope’s bedroom was just across hers.
"Yeah, we’re done. Come, come, I wanna show you guys something."
Calix’s excitement made Leslie and Calliope curious. The three of them headed to the bedroom opposite the hallway.
"W-wow!"
Calliope squealed in delight as soon as she ran past the door. Leslie also gasped in wonder.
The blush pink color chosen by the little dumpling certainly brightened the entire room but, there was another thing that caught their attention the most.
The checkerboard wall!
"Hehe, I painted this one myself. How is it? Great, isn’t it?"
Calix’s boast was replied with smiles and laughter from Leslie and Calliope.
"It looks so pretty... Better than the drawing..."
"Wow~ Wow~ Poppy’s walls of flowers!"
Calix broke into a huge grin. He pushed Leslie’s wheelchair closer to the checkerboard wall.
Calliope had started jumping up and down, unable to hold back her excitement. Her cheers resonated loudly in the empty bedroom.
Pastel purple and yellow checkerboard was painted on the huge wall, decorated with simple flowers in white and bright pink petals. This spectacular area became the centerpiece of this bedroom.
Sitting in the wheelchair, Leslie admired the beauty and charm of the checkerboard wall. It was delicately done by Calix for the past few hours.
"I actually forgot about this... Really, this is so impressive..."
Leslie smiled in helplessness, recalling Calliope’s drawing two nights ago. She also remembered Calix’s conversation with their daughter at the home center as he asked about the color choices.
"We can put the window seat there," Calix pointed to his right, at the huge window panels perpendicular to the checkerboard wall, "Hehe, Poppy can enjoy the sun while reading her books. What do you think, my buttercup?"
"Poppy loves that~"
A happy dumpling came running to her papa, telling him to pick her up. Calix swiftly did, even kissing the little one’s chubby cheeks, earning her laughter.
Ring! Ring!
The sudden ringing caught their attention. Supporting Calliope with one arm, Calix slipped out his personal phone from the pocket of his pants. He glanced at the screen.
"Who is... huh?"
Calix paused for a moment as a frown marred his forehead. Realizing the change in his countenance, Leslie quietly asked, "Who, Calix?"
Without saying anything, Calix silenced the phone before showing the screen to Leslie. Her eyes widened in surprise.
The caller was Rowan.
It seemed like this man tried reaching out to Calix because she had rejected his and Bianca’s calls and messages.
