Chapter 312: What Is Your Name, Darling?
Calix pulled his phone away from Calliope’s right ear once the little one bid goodbye to Director Li. It was another one of the promised phone calls to prevent Calliope from missing the orphanage too much.
Calix and Leslie brought Calliope to the lounge on the first floor after having a hearty dinner. He contacted Director Li, giving the phone to the little girl once the line was connected.
As Calliope animatedly chatted with Director Li, Calix and Leslie sat on the couch in silence. They chimed in from time to time when needed.
Calix and Leslie stared at Calliope who sat between them. Seeing her disheartened look, they exchanged a glance with each other.
"Hey, why do you look sad ah?" Calix poked one of Calliope’s cheeks with his fingertip, trying to ease the little one’s mood, "Do you miss Granny Li and your friends, Poppy?"
Usually, Calliope remained energetic after ending her phone calls with Director Li. She would start telling Leslie and Calix about her conversation with the orphanage director. Thus, her reaction right now seemed a bit weird.
"Oh... Ruby asked Poppy ah. About Poppy’s new grandpa and grandma," responded Calliope, her voice quieter than usual.
Ruby and Daisy were around Director Li when Calliope talked to the middle-aged lady just now. She heard her friend asking about her new family.
"Poppy! Meet your grandpa and grandma yet? Are they nice?"
Before Calliope could reply to Ruby, Director Li swiftly changed the subject. The little girl’s attention was instantly diverted elsewhere.
Calliope only recalled Ruby’s question right before Director Li ended the call.
Calix and Leslie didn’t expect Calliope to be discouraged by that question. There should be something else beneath that led the little one to feel sad.
Thinking something was going on, Calix softly asked, "Poppy, do you wanna talk to your great-grandma and grandparents?"
Calliope had seen Old Madam Xu, Andrian, Harper and the rest of Calix’s family from the photo albums. She also had heard stories about them last night.
Perhaps, she desired more than seeing photos and listening to stories about them.
Since it had come to this, Calix thought it was a good time to suggest Calliope meet his grandmother and parents. Of course, to see each other through video calls instead of physically.
"Yes, Poppy... How about you talk to them?"
Sharing the same sentiment, Leslie persuaded Calliope to give Calix’s suggestion a try. She believed the little one would be glad to meet the caring Xu family members.
Calliope blinked, slowly looking from Leslie to Calix. Her parents’ words instilled curiosity in her little heart, driven by Ruby’s question earlier.
"Can Poppy talk to Great-Grandma, Grandma and Grandpa?"
Leslie and Calix chuckled seeing how cautious Calliope was when asking them. Her initially dimmed eyes began to brighten, expressing her anticipation in this matter.
"They’ll be so happy if you do, Poppy. They’ve been waiting to meet you but, they want to wait until you’re ready. Well, it’s still early so let Papa call them first, en?"
"Hehe, okay~ Thank you, Papa, Mama," replied Calliope sweetly, her voice carrying hints of happiness.
Calix glanced at the tiny clock displayed on the phone screen, showing a quarter to nine. Usually, his grandmother and parents were still up at this time.
With a press on the screen, Calix phoned Andrian. He opted straightaway for a video call instead of the usual voice one.
While waiting for the call to be connected, Calix put the phone at an appropriate distance. Calliope clutched to Mimo, her eyes glimmering with anticipation.
Leslie’s smile softened. She caressed Calliope’s small back, knowing this was another important step for the little one.
"Calix? What’s gotten into you ah? A video call?"
Andrian’s laughing voice echoed from the phone. The middle-aged man didn’t expect to receive a video call from his youngest son because usually, Calix did that to his wife’s number.
Calix chuckled, staring at Andrian’s image on the screen. His father seemed to be resting in the family lounge instead of holing himself up in his home study.
Curling up a smirk, Calix glanced at Calliope before once again looking at Andrian. His eyes had a hint of mischief, "Well, that’s because your new granddaughter wanna talk to you."
"W-what? What did you say?"
Harper’s scream resonated as soon as Calix finished his words. Hurried footsteps echoed from Andrian’s end. The screen shook a little as Harper tried to get into the video call as well.
"Calix, what did you say? Our Calliope wanna talk to us?"
Another chuckle slipped out between Calix’s lips. Nodding, he gestured at Calliope with his chin, "Yes, she does. Where’s Grandma? Calliope wanna see her too."
"Ah! Your grandma’s in her room! Wait, let the call ongoing. We’ll go there first."
"Calliope~ Wait for Grandpa and Grandma! We’ll talk soon!"
Andrian and Harper waved at the screen despite Calix hadn’t directed the front lens toward Calliope yet. The spouses hurriedly left the lounge, heading to Old Madam Xu’s room.
"Don’t end the call!"
"Hahaha! Yeah, yeah, I won’t ah."
Calix laughed when Harper warned him not to cease the video call.
"See, Poppy? Your grandma and grandpa are excited to talk to you. Tell them your name, en? Come, say it to Papa and Mama."
Calix grinned as they waited for Andrian and Harper to reach Old Madam Xu’s room. He put the phone down, lying on the seat.
Leslie nodded, encouraging Calliope to follow what Calix said, "Yes, Poppy... What is your name, darling?"
Calliope smiled shyly. Stars twinkled in her expressive eyes as she recalled the slight change in her name.
"My name is Calliope Xu. I’m five years old."
Calix and Leslie clapped their hands, unisonly praising the little one.
"Correct! Good job, Poppy!"
"Hehe, our Poppy is smart..."
Calliope’s cheeks reddened. Giggles bubbled up from her small mouth.
Neither Calliope, Calix nor Leslie realized their simple yet heartwarming conversation was heard clearly by Harper and Andrian.
