Chapter 309: That Judgmental Prick

Chapter 309: That Judgmental Prick

Calix could barely sleep that night. Lying on the bed, he quietly watched Leslie and Calliope sleeping. Their soft yet steady breathing echoed vaguely in the bedroom.

Once again the three of them slept in Leslie’s chamber.

The clock’s needles pointed to a quarter past one in the morning. The entire manor was blanketed by a tranquil silence. Only the bodyguards on duty were still awake at this time.

"Humph! Don’t take... Poppy’s cake..."

All of a sudden, Calliope talked in her sleep, seemingly to argue with someone in her dream. She smacked her lips and turned to one side, kicking the blanket off her small body. She pressed her little face on the toy Mimo.

Helplessness overtook Calix as faint chuckles slipped out of his mouth. Shaking his head, he reached out for the blanket, intending to cover Calliope again.

"...yummy... strawberry cake..."

Calliope’s sleeptalk amused Calix. Gently patting the child’s back, he held back from laughing out loud.

’Aiya, she even dreams of eating. Mia and Poppy can be the best of friends ah. Little gluttons.’

Calix was inadvertently reminded of Amelia, his young niece who loved eating as much as Calliope. He couldn’t wait to introduce them to one another. Hopefully, soon.

"No... give Poppy pudding..."

"..."

Once again Calliope kicked the blanket. This time her little right foot hit Calix’s stomach. He stared deadpan at her.

’Should I wrap this one into a burrito?’

Letting out a sigh, Calix still pulled the blanket to shield Calliope. He placed his palm firmly on the little dumpling’s back, hoping she would stop kicking the cloth away.

Fortunately, Calliope seemed to calm down as her sleeptalk ceased. The little one continued sleeping, not knowing her papa had the intention to roll her into a burrito.

Calix shifted his gaze to Leslie. The underbed lights cast a faint glow on her features. He couldn’t really see her much due to the dimness.

One thing was for sure, Leslie was also deep in her slumber.

’I’m glad she’s sleeping well.’

Pursing his lips, Calix was hesitating about brushing his fingers over Leslie’s head. He was still entranced by the little hug they shared earlier, pursued by her following concern.

Leslie initially tried to stay up as long as Calix was awake, understanding he couldn’t sleep easily tonight. But, he persuaded her out of it.

They already had a busy day today. Xander’s sudden intrusion definitely added more to their exhaustion.

Calix didn’t want Leslie to lose her sleep because of that judgmental prick.

Xander’s blatant accusations toward Leslie still frustrated Calix deeply. That man had been a deprecating jackass once again to a person he deemed to be of a lower standing his best friend’s wife.

Calix and Davin had been advising Xander to act with more humility but, the latter’s pride didn’t allow him to do so. He also acted like that during his first few meetings with Violet.

I’ll settle scores with him soon.’

Shaking his head, Calix closed his eyes, forcing himself to sleep. He needed to recharge his energy for tomorrow’s activity.

Calix wanted to join the group of craftsmen painting Calliope’s bedroom tomorrow, intending to realize one of her wishes. He hoped to spend as much time as he could with both the little one and Leslie before he returned to work next week.

As he relaxed his mind and body, Calix gradually fell asleep. His slumber was peaceful for a considerable length of time, until...

’Honey, why do you look stressed ah? Something’s bothering you?’

’Here, I made your favorite strawberry milk.’

’Hehe, wanna go to the market together?’

Unfortunately for Calix, he was back in the apartment he dreamed of last night, once again meeting the unfamiliar woman.

Despite expressing his confusion, the woman seemed unperturbed by his reactions. She even laughed, making fun of his bewilderment.

The only good thing was, the dream didn’t last long. All because a little birdie woke him up the next morning.

"Papa! Mr. Sun is out! Wake up!"

"Poppy, let your papa sleep more..."

Calliope’s happy voice and Leslie’s concerned tone reached Calix’s ears, stirring him awake.

"..."

Opening his eyes, Calix saw Calliope’s little face enlarged right in front of him. She was sitting cross-legged on the bed. Her eyes brightened as soon as she saw him wake up.

"Good morning, Papa~ Wake up! Poppy’s not sleepy anymore."

Calix let out a chuckle, amused to see how energetic Calliope was so early in the morning. Leslie was also still in bed, seemingly checking her phone while leaning against the headboard.

Half of the curtain had been pulled apart, allowing the morning sunlight to stream into the room. Most of the sky had been colored light blue, leaving only a few streaks of ruby, amber and indigo over.

A brand-new day began.

"Morning, buttercup... Morning, Leslie... What time is it now?"

Pushing himself to sit up, Calix rubbed his eyes, trying to chase the lingering sleepiness away. He coughed twice, feeling his throat a bit parch.

In his grogginess, Calix pushed the thoughts related to the dream away. He didn’t want to disrupt his focus because of another weird dream.

"Seven-ten. Still early..." replied Leslie. Putting down the phone, she quickly masked the stiffness of her smile, "Why don’t you sleep more? The... painters won’t come until eight-thirty..."

Leslie knew about Calix’s plan to work alongside the craftsmen. Thinking that he might sleep late last night, she persuaded him to get a shut-eye.

"I’m fine. The weather looks nice. I’ll go for a morning run. Wanna follow? You two can take a stroll."

Calix gently refused Leslie’s suggestion, not noticing the slight tension in her expression. He threw a glance to the sky outside before looking at her and Calliope,

Calix intended to refresh himself by running a few laps around the lake. It would be better if Leslie and Calliope could accompany him in the backyard.

Having breakfast at the deck was a good idea too. He should tell Aunt Wendy to send food there.

"Want! Poppy want!"

"Sounds fun... Let’s all go..."

The mother and daughter swiftly agreed, causing his smile to soften.

"Okay, I wanna wash my face first."

"Poppy wanna brush my teeth."

"I’ll wait here... I’ve washed my face..."

Calix only had one particular thought at this moment.

Gosh.

He loved waking up to a morning like this.
