Chapter 288: The Wind, The Sun and The Flowers

Calliope’s dream to visit the pool and the lake came true in the evening. A nap recharged her energy fully, allowing her to play to her heart’s content.

Calix and Leslie first brought her to the rooftop pool where the little girl looked around delightedly. She tried to run but, Calix quickly stopped her from being a dashing dynamo lest she might fall into the pool.

Calliope’s joy amplified as soon as she saw the lake from the rooftop. Its glimmering surface under the sunlight caught her attention, reminding her of the stars she saw in the night sky.

"The lake! The lake! Look at the lake!"

The little girl’s screams of excitement echoed in the air, even heard by Uncle Raymond in the garden. He was tending to the flowers when he heard Calliope shouting from the rooftop.

"Yeah, yeah, let’s go there. We can watch the sunset there tho it’s not as pretty as at a beach."

Shrugging, Calix sighed out of helplessness while Leslie was clearly amused by their daughter’s enthusiasm.

"Should we take your photo... at the lake, Poppy? We can... send it to Director Li..."

"Yes! Please~"

Calliope quickly nodded, bobbing her head up and down like a chick pecking grains. Her eyes brightened at the mention of Director Li’s name.

Calix had contacted Director Li after lunch a few hours ago. He wanted to inform the orphanage director about their safe arrival in Silvercrest City.

Unfortunately, Calliope had already fallen asleep. Director Li couldn’t talk to the little girl even if she wanted to.

Calix promised to call Director Li again tonight, intending to let Calliope share stories about her moving today with her favorite grandmother figure.

"Let’s go! Let’s go!"

"Hehe, so excited ah Poppy..."

Calix and Leslie brought Calliope to the lake in the backyard. The sun had slowly descended to the horizon, casting a warm and golden hue on the area. The weather was slightly cooler than earlier.

"Mama~ Papa~ Poppy wanna run! Without shoes. Can I?"

The little munchkin requested to run on the field barefoot, something the spouses easily agreed with. Their approval was met with another enthusiastic scream.

"Don’t run so fast ah! You might fall!" shouted Calix, seeing how quickly Calliope raced ahead of him and Leslie.

"Poppy won’t fall ah!"

Ignoring Calix’s warning, Calliope enjoyed the feeling of the summer breeze passing by her. Her tiny feet barely landed on the ground as she continued sprinting. Her joyous laughter rang in the air.

Running randomly from here to there, Callipe’s ponytail swung in the air while her skirt billowed. The last rays of sunshine streaked through her hair, adding a glow to her beaming countenance.

The wind!

The sun!

The flowers!

Everything was great!

Calliope hastily stopped as soon as she reached the wooden deck. Instead of running on the short flight of stairs, she turned around.

"Papa! Mama! Hurry!"

Waving her hands, Calliope jumped up and down. Slightly out of breath, her face flushed red from all the running. Beads of sweat formed, glistening on her small forehead.

"Let’s go there," Calix gestured to the extended part of the deck with a tilt of his chin, "Poppy, be careful ah."

"Hehehe~ Okay~"

Calliope didn’t run like earlier. She walked beside Leslie’s wheelchair as Calix pushed his wife on the deck from the ramp. He stopped a few meters from the edge.

Putting both hands around Leslie’s frame, Calix carefully helped her stand up from the wheelchair. Calliope watched the husband and wife in curiosity.

"Oh, Mama can stand now? Not hurt anymore?"

"Just a little..." replied Leslie with a smile. She held to Calix’s waist as she took slow steps on the deck, "Mama is better now... I can walk for a bit..."

"Your mama is a strong woman ah," Calix chimed in, his voice having a dose of pride, "She works hard to get better. You’ll see your mama walking and running again. Who knows? You two will run on this yard together soon."

"Yayyy! Mama! Get better! Let’s run together!"

Calix’s words and Calliope’s encouragement deepened Leslie’s smile. Soft laughter rolled out of her mouth as she nodded.

"I will... Mama wanna do lots of things... with you, my darling..."

Leslie genuinely hoped to do various things with Calliope in this brand new world. Some of them were on her bucket list, the ones she had to postpone until she got to save more money to achieve them.

"Wow~ Can’t wait!"

Calliope burst into giggles, happy to hear what Leslie had just told her. Her mind started to imagine all the things she could do with her mama as how she often saw mother-daughter on the television.

Calix drew up a contented smile on his lips. Glancing at Leslie, he saw the way her eyes lit up with hope even from her side profile.

"Poppy, we haven’t shown you your room," said Calix while assisting Leslie to sit on the deck edge, letting her feet dangle above the lake, "It’s empty so you can’t use it yet. We need to decorate it first."

"Oh~ Decorate how?"

Calliope quickly sat next to Leslie while Calix took a spot by the child’s side. The family of three was reflected on the clear water of the lake, the image got distorted by the occasional ripples.

"You can pick the color and what kind... of bed and other things you want..." explained Leslie gently. She lifted one hand, brushing her fingertips on Calliope’s head, "You can decide it slowly... We’ll help you too..."

Leslie and Calix intended to show Calliope several catalogs of children’s bedroom decorations. They might help in giving her ideas.

"Wow~ Poppy likes it!"

Calliope covered her mouth, feeling a rush of happiness in her heart. The thought of having her own bedroom filled her with so much joy.

Leslie chuckled seeing the look of delight on Calliope’s countenance. She resumed speaking, "Before the makeover is done... you’ll use another room... or you can just sleep in Mama or Papa’s bedroom... It’s up to you, Poppy..."

"Then..." Calliope looked from Leslie to Calix, her whole face beaming under the dazzling sunlight, "Poppy wanna sleep with Mama and Papa. Together!"

Leslie and Calix were stunned. They unconsciously peeked at one another. Calliope’s words reminded them of last night.
