Chapter 287: Any Villain’s Instant Death Is Boring Ah
"Wow... why didn’t my brain work like that earlier ah? I always used similar tricks on Mia before."
Leslie replied to Calix’s lament with laughter, imbued with helplessness. The echo resonated in the home elevator. Her eyes shifted from his countenance to the sleeping Calliope in his arms.
"Poppy’s just too excited..." Leslie tried to comfort the pitiful man, still amused by Calix and Calliope’s banter before they had lunch more than an hour ago, "Let’s show her the pool and... the lake after her nap..."
"Yeah, better to let her sleep first," Calix looked fondly at the sleeping child. He carefully supported her little body on his arm while the other patted her back, "Our mischievous little bun."
"Hehehe..."
Calix and Leslie had just returned from having lunch. Calliope couldn’t resist her drowsiness after eating so much food. She fell asleep as soon as her father carried her.
Calliope forgot about her war with Calix right after she saw the feast Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond had prepared for lunch. Edward also joined them at the dining table.
The husband and wife made more dishes than usual to welcome Calliope. Because they learned the little one’s deep fondness towards strawberries like Calix, Aunt Wendy baked a strawberry pie and some mango-strawberry puddings.
"Yummy~ The pie and puddings so yummy~"
"Thank you, Granny Wendy~ Poppy loves strawberries so much!"
Calliope couldn’t resist praising the desserts as she devoured them one by one. Her sweet talk and actions inevitably made Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond like her more.
Coming out of the elevator, Leslie wheeled herself down the hallway, followed by Calix. They hadn’t gotten the chance to show Calliope the guest room. For now, the child would nap in Leslie’s bedroom.
"I have a few things to discuss with Edward," said Calix as he lowered Calliope on the bed. He looked at Leslie, "Call me if you need anything."
"Hehe, okay..."
Calix had been saying the same thing hundreds of times over the past few months but, Leslie wasn’t annoyed by it. The few simple words just expressed his concern for her, something she never wanted to take for granted.
"Let’s show her around the house as much as we can," Calix adjusted the toy Mimo’s position in Calliope’s embrace, "She might get tired if we go to every corner."
"Aiya, don’t worry too much ah..." teased Leslie, her countenance beaming, "You’ll know when she tries... to act she’s still okay..."
"I’ll definitely use that trick if she protests," Calix raised his brows, his lips carrying a smirk.
Leslie covered her mouth, trying not to laugh, "Yes, yes..."
Calix quietly left the bedroom, unwilling to stir the sleeping Calliope awake. He threw a smile at Leslie before he finally closed the door. She returned the same smile at him.
Leslie had just pulled the blanket over Calliope when something familiar came peeking from the bed. Letting out some laughter, she softly asked, "Mimo, why are you hiding... like that?"
Mimo didn’t make any appearances during Leslie’s stay at Frostwich Town despite being invited to follow. The crochet fox toy simply said its other half—the body—was enough to accompany Calliope.
Leslie, Poppy is really here, right?
Mimo’s voice had a hint of sadness. It sounded a bit afraid, even.
Understanding the meaning beneath Mimo’s question, Leslie softened her smile.
Mimo might not be a human being but, it deeply cared about Calliope. Despite knowing the little one was so close to their grasp, the crochet fox toy was still worried about the off chance they failed to reunite with Calliope.
Leslie patted the spot next to the toy Mimo, her voice gently echoing in the room. Her eyes fell on the upper half of Mimo’s face as it still peeked from the mattress.
"Look, Mimo. Poppy is sleeping here... with your body together... Don’t you wanna get closer?"
Mimo slowly floated up before landing on the bed. The crochet fox toy stared at the napping Calliope before it looked at Leslie.
"Hehe, lie down ah... You haven’t slept with Poppy... in a long time, right? Only... your physical body... did..."
Leslie’s constant persuasion seemed to perk Mimo up. It chuckled, sounding a bit sheepish.
Leslie, I’ll enter my body for a moment, hehe~
"Yeah, go on..." Leslie nudged Mimo a bit more, "I’m tired. I’ll nap too..."
For the first time ever, Leslie witnessed the soul of Mimo jumping into its physical body. The crochet fox toy in Calliope’s embrace glowed for a few seconds, leaving a fleeting light.
Smiling, Leslie whispered, "Have a good nap, Mimo."
You too, Leslie.
Even though the toy couldn’t move, Leslie swore she saw its eyes gleaming momentarily. Mimo’s tone also changed from glum to a happy one, expressing its dissipating fear.
Leslie slowly lay on the bed. She made sure to cover both Calliope and Mimo with the blanket. The quiet snoring of her daughter deepened her smile.
"Sleep tight and have... sweet dreams, my darling..."
Brushing her lips on Calliope’s forehead, Leslie did the same to Mimo. She chuckled as she sensed the crochet fox toy squirming in embarrassment.
While Leslie was napping peacefully with Calliope and Mimo, Calix had a not-so-peaceful discussion with Edward. The two men sat in Calix’s home office.
"Are you sure about this, Boss?"
Edward’s tense voice expressed his concern about Calix’s future plans regarding the Li family.
"Hit them where it hurts the most, their pockets," Calix snickered, his eyes glinting with a malicious light, "Investigate their finances. We’ll aim for their capital chain and mess with their planning. Do it slowly."
"You don’t want to deal with them with just one huge blow?" asked Edward again, intrigued by Calix’s plan to torment the Li family slowly.
"Nah, it won’t be fun," Calix shrugged. Putting both hands deep into his pants pockets, he leaned leisurely against the backrest, "Any villain’s instant death is boring ah. A slow yet painful demise is better. Don’t you think so?"
"...yeah, right."
Edward felt shivers ghosted down his spine. His Boss Xu was not the only one who desired to end the Li family.
The Old Madam Xu, Chairman Xu and Madam Xu, all three of them also joined forces!
