Chapter 286: They Have to Use Tricks at Times Like This

Always an approachable child, Calliope didn’t show any hints of awkwardness as she introduced herself to Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond. Her easy-going manner effortlessly caught the older spouses’ hearts.

"Mr. Calix, Mrs. Leslie and Miss Poppy, let’s head inside. The weather is getting hotter nowadays," Aunt Wendy gestured to the main door, "We’ve prepared some food for you. We need to reheat the dishes first."

"Yes, yes, everyone, come in."

The family of three, Mrs. An and Edward tailed after Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond.

The other staff had entered the manor through the side doors. Some of them would leave for the Xu family’s ancestral home after dealing with the baggage and whatnot.

It was the same with Mrs. An and Mrs. Su. Calix gave them three days off. Both of them would return to their respective homes soon. Two colleagues from the same agency would come to replace them for the time being.

"Poppy, wanna walk on your own?" asked Calix once he walked into the entryway.

People had started taking off their shoes. They stored their footwear in the hidden cabinets on the wall.

Calliope bobbed her head up and down, nodding. She was charmed by the interior of the manor. Everything reminded her of the dramas the orphanage staff loved to watch during their spare time.

So cool!

Papa and Mama’s home was so cool ah!

And this was her home too now!

"Here you go."

Calix crouched on the floor, letting Calliope sit on the elevated area of the flooring. He took off the little girl’s shoes before getting a pair of child’s home slippers handed by Aunt Wendy.

"Look here. Granny Wendy and Grandpa Raymond bought these slippers for you. Do you like them?"

"Oh!"

Calliope’s eyes brightened in joy as soon as she saw the cute home slippers. They were in pink color with white bunnies holding carrots in the center of each.

Standing up on the elevated platform at the entryway, Calliope wore the slippers. She tilted her head up, smiling sweetly at Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond.

"Granny Wendy, Grandpa Raymond, thank you~ Poppy loves bunny slippers so much."

Aunt Wendy smiled in return while Uncle Raymond clutched his chest, acting as if he was attacked by Calliope’s cuteness.

"We’re glad you love the slippers, Miss Poppy," Aunt Wendy softened her voice. She couldn’t help from feeling her heart melted, "Again, welcome to your new home. You’ll have so many places to see but, let’s save it after eating, en?"

"Okay~"

Leslie and Mrs. An separated from the group as she wanted to go to the toilet first. Calix brought Calliope to the lounge, wishing to take a breather before eating.

Edward followed Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond to the kitchen. He intended to help them reheat and plate some of the dishes.

Calix told Calliope to sit on the couch as he went to the small fridge in the lounge. Retrieving a small mineral water bottle from the inside, he uncapped it.

"Are you tired, Poppy?" asked Calix while handing the bottle to Calliope, "Here ah, drink some water."

"A teeny tiny tired," answered Calliope after drinking. She joined her thumb and her index fingertips together, expressing how minuscule her tiredness was, "Papa, this house is so pretty! Like a castle!"

"Hahaha!"

Calix exploded out laughing, the sound resonating in the lounge. Calliope’s exclamation reminded him of what he had just said to Leslie the other day[01].

"Hehe, so Poppy wanna see the entire house?" Calix raised his brows, already imagining how delighted Calliope was to tour the manor, "You know what, we have a pool and a lake. Those are Mama’s favorite places."

"Oh oh ohhh! Poppy wanna see! Poppy wanna see!"

Calliope’s sudden burst of energy almost spilled the water. Laughing, Calix took the bottle from the excited little girl.

"Hahaha! Easy ah, easy! You have to rest first, okay?"

"...but Poppy not tired ah," protested Calliope, her lips pouty.

Snickering, Calix pointed out, "You said you are just now."

"Only teeny tiny tired ah," insisted Calliope, unwilling to back away after being told about the pool and the lake.

"No. You have to take a nap. If not, Papa won’t bring you there."

Calix’s warning deflated Calliope like a balloon being punctured, "Papa, not fair ah... Poppy wanna see. Humph!"

An angry ball turned her head away, mad at her father. She hugged the toy Mimo tightly. Steam puffed nonstop from her ears.

Calix laughed in helplessness. He couldn’t fathom how such a small body had so much energy. This was just a similar case he experienced with Amelia many times before.

Hehe, he was so tempted to pull his daughter’s ponytail.

"En, why the long face... Poppy?"

Leslie appeared not long after Calliope struck a war with Calix. She was alone as Mrs. An had just left. Her face was slightly damp from the water.

"Mama!"

Calliope quickly jumped from the couch, running deng deng deng to Leslie. She threw her small body on her mother’s lap, her face aggrieved.

"Hehe, why? Did Papa tease you?" Leslie chuckled, recalling the vague echoes of Calliope and Calix bantering earlier. She ran a palm over her daughter’s head.

"Poppy wanna see the lake and the pool. Papa said Poppy has to sleep first."

Amused, Leslie raised her brows. She fully understood the situation with just an explanation from Calliope.

Leslie shifted her gaze from the sulky Calliope to Calix. The man was still sitting on the couch. He shrugged, plastering a smile on his face.

They needed to use tricks at times like this. An idea flashed in her mind.

"Aiya, Mama is sleepy. Haa..." Leslie pretended to yawn, "What to do? Mama... wanna sleep after eating... so tired... But Mama wanna show Poppy... the lake and the pool too..."

Calliope froze, her mouth gaping in shock.

"M-mama, Poppy is tired too! Let’s rest together! Poppy will see the lake and the pool after a nap!"

Under Calix’s dumbfounded gaze, Calliope quickly backtracked. She was no longer insistent on seeing the two places right after eating anymore.

Chuckling, Leslie looked at Calix. The man sighed in helplessness, amused by her wittiness.
