Chapter 284: Were There Any Villains in His Story?

Calliope cried at the end of the farewell but, she didn’t protest when Calix carried her into the van once they walked out of the orphanage. Director Li, the staff and the children sent them off to the front yard.

"Poppy! Don’t cry!"

"We’ll miss you! Call us ah!"

"We love you, Poppy!"

The little turnip heads tried to comfort their crying friend despite being sad themselves. They cheered and waved at Calliope, hoping to put her worried heart at ease.

"Sob... sob... bye-bye! Don’t forget Poppy!"

The children shared another tearful farewell. Once the vehicle started moving, Calliope quietly sat in the child’s car seat while looking at the orphanage outside the windows.

The building gradually grew smaller and smaller and smaller until... it disappeared from her vision. She also could no longer see her friends and the adults.

"Poppy, cry if you want..."

Leslie reached out one hand toward Calliope. They sat on the same row while Calix was in the front, facing them. Their daughter was tightly hugging the toy Mimo, still hiccuping from her crying.

Logan acted as the driver, accompanied by one of his colleagues. Mrs. Su, Mrs. An and the rest of the entourage members were in the other vehicles. Some of them were already waiting at the airport.

"No..." Calliope shook her small head. She looked at Leslie and Leslie, her eyes swollen like peanuts, "Poppy promised Granny not to cry. Poppy isn’t a baby."

Leslie smiled in helplessness, followed by Calix’s chuckle. Calliope’s words reminded them of their daughter’s conversation with Director Li earlier.

Calix grabbed some tissues before he started to wipe Calliope’s tear-stricken face.

"Dry your face first," Calix softened his voice, helplessness imbuing his voice, "If not, Papa will send your puffy face photo to Director Li."

"Ah! Papa, no!"

Glaring at Calix, Calliope failed to protest. She begrudgingly let her father wipe her damp face.

"You can call your Granny Li... to say you’ve reached your new home..." said Leslie, distressed to see the sad Calliope, "She’ll be happy... to hear that..."

"Oh! Poppy can?"

Calliope’s quiet voice due to her sadness brightened as soon as she heard Leslie. Her expressive eyes were layered with anticipation.

"Of course... You can do a video call too..."

Leslie ran her thumb under Calliope’s left eye. The little one started laughing, showing she felt better than earlier. Her daughter’s giggles pushed some of her worries aside.

Calix curled up his lips, sharing the same feelings as Leslie. He quietly took in the faces of the two important people in his life – his wife and his daughter.

’Calliope’s safe with us now. I can start striking them soon.’

An unfathomable light glinted in Calix’s dark eyes as sinister thoughts loomed in his head. Throwing his gaze out of the windows, no one could tell what was going on in his mind.

The ride to the airport was a quiet one because Calliope was still gloomy. But, her mood changed entirely the moment she spotted the airport.

"Oh, wow~ Wow! So many planes!"

Calliope almost stuck her face onto the window. Her action garnered laughter from Calix and Leslie. If not for the child’s car seat restraining her body, she might really plant her face on the glass panel.

"We’ll ride one of those," Calix scooted closer to the window, pointing toward the flights, "Are you excited, my buttercup?"

"Yes! Poppy never rides on one!"

Calliope went ohhh and ahhh for quite some time. Her small body couldn’t contain her overflowing excitement. Calix and Leslie exchanged a glance, pleased to see the abrupt change in their daughter because of the flights.

Before alighting the van, Calix put on a pink bucket hat on Calliope’s head. Its wide brim helped to conceal the child’s face. Even though the surrounding area was safe, Calix was still worried about people seeing the child.

"Poppy, can you wear the hat until we enter our flight?" asked Calix while carrying Calliope in one arm. He brushed her bangs to one side, "The sun is quite hot even in the airport."

"Okay~"

Leslie understood what Calix was doing. Like him, she was also worried about anyone who recognized them spotting the child before they arrived home.

’We can’t protect Poppy’s identity forever but... this is not the time yet.’

Sooner or later, Calix would announce Calliope’s existence to the high society. He had discussed the issue with Leslie.

If they continued hiding their daughter without giving any hints about her, people would surely talk and treat her like a shameful child.

Calix wanted to prevent that from happening. He would declare Calliope was his beloved child who was under the solid protection of the Xu family. Anyone who dared to mistreat her would face their wrath.

Calix let Mrs. An push Leslie’s wheelchair down the jet bridge as he and Calliope followed from behind. He chuckled as soon as the little one gasped in wonder.

"Wow! Poppy’s inside a flight! Wow~"

Calliope’s eyes widened in disbelief and joy. She took off the hat, eagerly turning her head in all directions. Everything caught the attention of the curious child.

"Hahaha! Wait ah! Papa will put you down."

Guffawing at Calliope’s antics, Calix lowered her to the floor. Leslie also saw what happened between the child and the man. Laughter also rolled out of her mouth.

"The flight won’t move yet so you... can look around..." said Leslie while being helped to the couch by Mrs. An, "Don’t run, Poppy... Lest you might bump into something..."

"Okay, Mama~ Papa, show Poppy!"

"Hahaha! Okay, okay!"

Leslie watched Calix bringing Calliope out of their private lounge, heading to the nearby areas. She dropped the idea of joining them, unwilling to hinder the father and daughter’s bonding time.

Leslie threw her gaze out of the windows, seeing the wide runway for the flights to take off or landing. Unable to resist, she wondered what might happen next.

’I’ve reunited with Poppy. Will some of the original plots still follow? But, I know close to nothing.’

Were there any villains in Calix’s story in the novel?

Were they who she thought would be?

Why she hadn’t received more visions about the future plots as she was told before?

Were there any unknown requirements?

So many questions swirled in Leslie’s mind but unfortunately, she didn’t have the golden finger to answer them.
