Chapter 283: The Pain was Inevitable
Calix tried cooking up some excuses but, he didn’t want to make a fool of himself further. He had a feeling Leslie would continue teasing him.
"Mama said Papa had bad dreams, really?"
Calliope’s question relieved Calix. It seemed like Leslie told their daughter that. To save himself, he simply played along by nodding, "Yeah, Papa had bad dreams."
"Oh? What kind of..."
"Wow! The smell is so nice! What did your Grandpa Mo have made ah? Pancakes?"
Calix prevented Calliope from asking further by redirecting her attention to the breakfast menu. As expected, the little one was easily distracted by any mention of food.
Soon, all the children gathered in the dining room alongside the staff. Most of them appeared glum due to Calliope’s departure this morning. They were not as chatty as usual.
The little turnip heads didn’t feel sad much yesterday during the party but, reality slowly sank in after they woke up.
Calliope, their friend was going away.
They couldn’t joke or play with her anymore.
Even if they wanted to meet her, the great distance between them and the time were the barriers.
The older ones were better at keeping their emotions in check but, not the smaller ones. The latter group was all teared up as they didn’t understand why their friend had to leave their home, the orphanage.
"Everyone! Cheer up!"
Standing in the middle of the dining room, Director Li clapped her hands twice. The children sadly looked at her, followed by the adults. The older woman carved a smile on her face as she fondly gazed upon the children.
"It’s fine to be sad but, why don’t you guys spend the remaining time to be happy with Poppy? You won’t get to see each other much later."
Director Li wouldn’t ever invalidate the children’s feelings by saying they couldn’t be sad at all.
Every child was each other’s close siblings in this small orphanage. Losing even one of them was painful enough to wash off any smiles on their faces.
The children blinked their teary eyes. Some of them were already sobbing. None of them felt any desire to take a bite of the breakfast served on the tables.
Sensing how somber the atmosphere was, Calix and Leslie exchanged a glance with one another. They shifted their eyes to Calliope, finding their daughter’s eyes had also started to redden.
"Poppy..."
"Yummy!"
Calliope’s exclamation stunned Calix and Leslie alongside the other children. She picked one small cut of the pancakes before eating it again. Her round eyes glistened with tears.
"These pancakes are so yummy ah. Why no eating yet? Poppy is hungry."
Sweeping her eyes around the room, Calliope looked at her friends’ gloomy countenances. Her action seemed to shock them before a few of them started to move.
"Grandpa Mo’s mixed some bananas and almonds in these pancakes," said one of the older children, "Everyone, eat! We can talk more with Poppy if we finish eating earlier."
"Yeah, yeah, I haven’t given my gift to Poppy."
"Give me some butter please~ Oh, the syrup too."
As if Calliope had just pulled some switches, the children started eating despite still being teary-eyed.
Director Li, Leslie, Calix and the rest of the adults were amazed by the quick change in the atmosphere. The little turnip heads began to fill the dining room with their chatters. A few of them called Calliope to join them.
"Go, you can eat with them," said Calix as he patted Calliope’s head, "Papa and Mama will wait here."
Leslie nodded, smiling fondly at Calliope. She also encouraged the little one to do the same.
"Okay~ Poppy will eat with my friends."
Leaving the toy Mimo to Leslie, Calliope carefully brought her plastic plate to the table occupied by Ruby and Daisy. Calix grabbed her glass, tailing along behind the little one before returning to his table.
"She’ll be fine," whispered Calix once he saw the look of worry on Leslie’s countenance, "See, our daughter easily changed the mood."
"Hehe, you’re right..."
Some of the children ate as quickly as they could. They wanted to talk to Calliope who sat at the table on the right side of the room.
The little turnip heads’ conversation revolved around the same topics. They reminded Calliope to eat well, not to forget them and to make new friends once she enrolled in any school.
"Poppy will eat well ah! Food is too yummy! Hard to resist!"
"Poppy won’t forget you guys! Hehe, I will you Granny and talk to you too."
"Poppy wanna go to school~ Poppy will surely get some friends."
The children were so engrossed in their conversation that none of them noticed it was time for Calliope to leave. Director Li stopped Calix from bearing the bad news as she approached the little ones.
"Children, Poppy has to follow Mr. Xu and Mrs. Xu now," Director Li softened her voice, understanding her words would incite more sadness in them, "Let’s take some photos together?"
Words of protests and denials erupted before they slowly faded. With heavy hearts, the children followed Director Li’s instructions. Some of them ran out of the dining rooms, saying they had to get gifts for Calliope.
"You guys! Huddle closer!" exclaimed Logan as he acted as the photographer, "Yeah, like that. I’ll count now! Three! Two! One! Smile!"
Kacha.
There were no dry eyes in the dining room as one by one bid farewell to Calliope. The children and adults hugged the little one, continuously reminding her to live well.
"Poppy will live well! You too! Sob!"
Calliope’s tears ran down her face, leaving streaks on her chubby cheeks. She seemed to act tough but, her attempt failed quickly as more tears rolled gushing out of her eyes.
The last one was Director Li. She didn’t cry as much as the others but sorrow was still evident on her face.
"Poppy, Granny loves you."
Director Li tightly hugged Calliope. No other words followed as the rest was conveyed by the embrace.
Calliope chuckled in between sobbing. She rubbed her face on Director Li’s chest, "Poppy loves Granny too! Granny is the best ah!"
Calix and Leslie were torn to see the painful look on Calliope’s countenance but, they couldn’t do much. This painful separation was inevitable.
Their daughter was saying goodbyes to the people who genuinely loved and cared for her.
Now, they had to make sure the pain experienced by their daughter today was worth it.
They had to be the best parents for her, to protect her from any dangers and to shower their love for her.
