Chapter 240: To Avoid Him Losing Her Again

Leslie believed the culprit would reappear. Unfortunately, she couldn’t tell when.

As a best friend to the male lead, Calix shouldn’t encounter too big of obstacles. The nerve-wracking crises only belonged to Xander’s side which took the majority of the story.

’If only I know the original storyline more. Some clues are better than nothing.’

Pressing her lips in a straight line, Leslie persuaded herself not to feel discouraged. Her lack of knowledge didn’t mean they couldn’t overcome the future obstructions.

Perhaps, clues leading to the perpetrators would arise sooner in the future. They just had to wait for the right time.

’Calliope. I have to focus on her first.’

Leslie returned her focus to Calix and Old Madam Xu. The grandmother and grandson pair were bantering while exchanging opinions. The old lady’s words piqued her interest.

"...won’t it be too time-consuming if you keep traveling from here to Bridgeland City? Aren’t there no other solutions?"

It seemed like Old Madam Xu was worried about Calix and Leslie’s plan. Her concern was not unfounded.

Calix was the CEO of a conglomerate. His schedule was usually full, either involving domestic or international affairs. At times, he could barely have a few hours of sleep before attending another agenda.

As for Leslie, she was still in a recuperation period. The journeys and changes in environments might not be good for her body.

Constant traveling between the two cities was not efficient for both of them. They also couldn’t stay longer even if they wanted to, mostly due to Calix’s schedules.

"We can only think of that for now," Calix let out a sigh, agreeing to what his grandmother meant, "I don’t mind the traveling but, I’m also worried about Leslie."

Shifting his eyes from Old Madam Xu, Calix stared at Leslie. She seemed to be interested in what he had to say. More words flowed out of his mouth.

"The better option is for Leslie to stay there while I fly between cities. But, I don’t want to leave her there alone even with the helpers present."

Calix could easily find a comfortable lodging for Leslie in Bridgeland City. Doing that would take the stress of constant traveling off her.

Yet, he selfishly didn’t want to. He wished to keep her near him, always.

To avoid him losing her again.

Blinking, Calix realized where his thoughts strayed off. Whisking his eyes away from Leslie, he coughed once before saying, "Grandma, do you have any idea for us?"

Old Madam Xu lifted her brows, noticing the slight fluster on her grandson’s countenance including the fleeting faint blush. If it was up to her, she wanted to tease Calix but, this was not the suitable time.

Tsk, she was not as thoughtless as this rascal ah.

Shrugging, Old Madam Xu replied to Calix with another question of her own, "I know you two want to keep this matter secret for now. But, until when? Do you have a rough timeline in mind?"

Sooner or later, the main branch of the Xu family would learn of Calliope’s existence. This couldn’t be avoided as Calix and Leslie started integrating the little one into their lives.

"At least, right before she... starts living with us... If there’s a good... option, we might change... our initial plan..."

Leslie chimed in, simply bringing up her discussion with Calix before coming here. Both she and Calix were up to any possible changes if those would benefit them.

"It’s just..." Leslie paused, hesitating for a moment before she continued, "At least... we don’t want the Li family... to know about this yet... including my parents..."

Pursing his lips, Calix reached out for one of Leslie’s hands without thinking. He enveloped her small hand in between his broad palms, acting as if he wanted to channel some of his strength to her. His action brought a smile to her lips.

Old Madam Xu’s frown deepened as she understood the reason behind Leslie’s words. Recalling what Calix told her about the mistreatments endured by the young lady made her blood boil and her heart hurt.

How could they treat a vulnerable pregnant woman so viciously like that?

If she knew sooner, she would definitely teach the vicious old hag of the Li family a harsh lesson!

Urgh!

Old Madam Xu took a deep breath, not wanting to frighten Leslie with her rage toward Old Madam Li. She didn’t care about scaring Calix at all.

"I have an idea," Old Madam Xu softened her tone. She locked her gaze on Leslie’s slightly downcast countenance, "If you two don’t mind, tell Calix’s parents about this."

Old Madam Xu’s words caught Leslie and Calix’s interest. They waited for the old lady to resume explaining instead of immediately chiming in.

"Calix’s father can oversee the company on his behalf for the time being. You two can focus on bonding with Calliope. You can even stay near the orphanage. There’s no need to keep flying between the cities unless it’s necessary."

Calix and Leslie exchanged a glance, silently thinking what a good choice it was. The catch was they needed to tell Andrian and Harper about Calliope’s existence earlier than expected.

Andrian was a capable leader during his tenure before he passed the CEO seat to Calix. Now as the Chairman, he mostly watched over Xu International from afar, only attending the major meetings a few times a year.

Leslie was still not very familiar with Andrian but, she believed the man would be glad to cover for his second son. The middle-aged man had never come across as someone haughty and selfish.

"Take your time to think," Old Madam Xu drew a smile on her lips, trying to ease the spouses’ worries, "No matter what your choice is, I’ll respect that."

Calix and Leslie nodded, still needing time to ponder despite how tempting the option was.

"We’ll tell you after we discuss about it, Grandma," said Calix, seeming calmer than before, "It won’t take long. We don’t want to waste any time either."

Leslie nodded, sharing the same view as Calix, "If possible, we hope to... start living with Calliope... within next month."

Old Madam Xu said nothing, only expressing her feelings with a smile. There were still so many things she wanted to ask Leslie and Calix but, those could wait until later.

First, they needed to bring Calliope back to the little one’s rightful home and life.
