Chapter 239: Tell the Truth or Fabricate Lies
Calix and Leslie lay together on the bed, trying to get some rest whether they ended up napping or not. They managed to ease some of the tension stemming from the slight chaos.
Over one hour later, a female helper—Mrs. Zhao—came to fetch the spouses. Old Madam Xu specifically chose her, knowing her ability to assist Leslie if needed.
Mrs. Zhao was a certified caregiver. She used to work for a care home before coming to the Xu family’s ancestral home. The middle-aged woman usually worked close to Old Madam Xu.
While Mrs. Zhao helped Leslie to get ready, Calix waited outside. He simply freshened up by washing his face.
"Second Young Madam, you’re in good shape," praised Mrs. Zhao as she gently pressed Leslie’s right forearm, "The old madam worries about you but, I think you’re getting better quicker than most people."
Mrs. Zhao witnessed how Leslie was able to do certain tasks. Despite still being unable to stand longer, her experienced eyes could tell the young lady’s rehab sessions worked favorably on her.
"Thank you, Mrs. Zhao..." Leslie smiled at Mrs. Zhao, her heart blooming to receive a compliment from a stranger, "Please tell Grandma that... I don’t want her to... worry much about me..."
Leslie let Mrs. Zhao rub and knead her arms when the older woman asked for her permission. She missed getting massages from Mrs. An and Mrs. Su. To her surprise, Mrs. Zhao’s skills were pleasant.
"Please don’t worry about the old madam, Second Young Madam," Mrs. Zhao chuckled, understanding Leslie’s concern, "I’ll reassure her."
Leslie thanked Mrs. Zhao. Soon, the helper pushed her wheelchair out of the bedroom. Calix’s figure appeared in front of them as soon as the door was opened.
"Ready?" asked Calix after thanking Mrs. Zhao for helping Leslie, "Grandma is on her way to the dining room."
"Yeah..." Leslie nodded. Her bright eyes expressed how she was cheerier than before," Let’s go now... Don’t make Grandma wait for us..."
Calix dismissed Mrs. Zhao before taking over Leslie’s wheelchair. He pushed her toward the newly installed home elevator.
Following Leslie’s first visit two weeks ago, Old Madam Xu ordered Butler Gu to have someone set up a home elevator. The old lady wished to make her second granddaughter-in-law’s future visits smoother.
Calix joked with Leslie the first time he told her about it.
"Grandma has always been stubborn ah. She keeps refusing to install one even for her own convenience. She says her knees are still strong enough to climb the stairs. Wow~ She concedes because of you."
Leslie had nothing aside from immense gratitude for Old Madam Xu.
The old lady had more than enough wealth to get an exclusive home elevator. But, she wouldn’t do it if not for her consideration toward her granddaughter-in-law.
That reason was enough to touch Leslie’s heart.
Calix and Leslie reached the dining room just a few minutes before Old Madam Xu appeared. The three of them enjoyed having lunch while chatting. None of them brought up the important issue from this morning’s talk.
Until they moved to a lounge after lunch.
"You two want to get Calliope to live together, don’t you?"
Old Madam Xu asked Calix and Leslie after sipping her tea. She instructed Butler Gu to prevent anybody from coming closer to the lounge.
"It’s our next plan after telling you about this, Grandma," Calix admitted with a nod, "We want her to be comfortable with us first so, we might travel to Bridgeland City more often."
"Calix is right..." Leslie chimed in, showing her support for her husband’s plan, "It’ll take some energy and time but... we don’t want to rush... Calliope to accept us..."
Following Leslie’s words, Calix repeated the story of how Calliope was friendly to them. But, the situation might change after the little one learned their true identity – her birth parents.
"Director Li has reminded me about it," Calix recalled the times he discussed with the orphanage director about bringing Calliope under his wings, "We need to be prepared with anything. There’s a chance she’ll reject us at first."
Frowning, Old Madam Xu put down the teacup. She took her time pondering the matters brought up by Calix and Leslie.
"Calliope is five years old, doesn’t she?" Old Madam Xu paused, trying to digest the unpleasantness in her gut, "She’s old enough to process abandonment. She might ask why her parents left her at the orphanage."
"That’s what we’re afraid of..." Calix exhaled a sigh, creases of worry wrinkling on his forehead, "We’ll change our plans depending on her first reaction. But, we’ll likely keep traveling between here and there for now."
Old Madam Xu nodded, understanding the approach Calix and Leslie had decided on. Still, she had more to ask the spouses.
"You know you can’t hide Calliope’s existence longer, aren’t you? Do you have any plans for that? Of what to tell if people asked about her?"
Old Madam Xu knew this was Calix and Leslie’s private matter but, she was simply thinking rationally. Sooner or later, the relatives would hear about the child.
Despite living under good care at the orphanage, Old Madam Xu’s heart was distressed thinking of Calliope. She yearned to shower the little one affection, to show Calliope she had a family.
Whether Calix and Leslie wanted to tell the truth or fabricate lies, Old Madam Xu needed them to set the story straight to avoid confusion and mixed-ups.
Calix glanced at Leslie. Both of them had the same thing in mind. They had discussed this aspect before coming to Phoenix Heights earlier.
"Leslie and I were a couple six years ago. We hid our romance from other people, including our close family and friends. Due to a big disagreement, we parted ways. Calliope is the result of our short-lived romance."
Leslie grabbed the baton after Calix was done speaking. She spoke further, "I heard of Calix’s accident... so, I didn’t dare to reveal my... pregnancy. My family hid me in a... faraway city because I refused... to abort the child. I also... didn’t tell them who’s... the father."
Old Madam Xu blinked, sensing where this might lead. Nevertheless, she continued listening as Calix talked again. A smirk hung on his lips, followed by a confident glint in his eyes.
"I forgot about Leslie because of the accident. Even when I started to remember her, I didn’t approach her because of my heartbreak. But, things changed when I learned of her being in a coma."
Old Madam Xu’s lips twitched. Calix and Leslie’s words were aligned with her expectations.
Raising her brows, Old Madam Xu said while looking pointedly at the snickering Calix.
"Driven by regrets, you sought for her hands in marriage. You two reconciled happily and now, Leslie revealed how the Li family took your child away after birth. Is that the story you have in mind?"
Elated, Calix abruptly clapped his hands.
"Grandma! All those hours you spend watching soap operas are not for nothing ah!"
Old Madam Xu glared, "...shut up. I haven’t dealt with you yet."
"Hehe, yes~"
Leslie chuckled, already anticipating this kind of response from Old Madam Xu.
"Hurm... Then, let’s use that story," Old Madam Xu had nothing aside from approval, "Aside from the Li family, only the perpetrators will try to dig deeper."
"Yes, we’re thinking like that too."
Leslie quietly fiddled with her skirt. She couldn’t help but wonder about the mastermind who tried messing with Calix all those years ago.
Would he make his reappearance? If yes, when?
