Chapter 234: Do You Want Me to Haunt You?

Chapter 234: Do You Want Me to Haunt You?

Calix and Leslie headed to the Xu family’s ancestral home without informing anyone at that estate. The former just did a quick check, learning Andrian and Harper were out visiting their friends.

"This is our chance," said Calix after ending his call with the ancestral home, "Even if Mom and Dad know we’ll have a secret conversation with Grandma, they won’t ever pester us for details."

Andrian and Harper taught their children the importance of boundaries. If they learned the siblings sharing some secrets or anything like that, they would simply turn a blind eye.

It was the same with private journals. None of them snooped into their children’s bedrooms looking for their diaries.

Calix and Vernon didn’t care much about journals but, Evelyn was the opposite. She loved penning down her everyday life using cute notebooks and stationeries.

Andrian and Harper’s teaching made the siblings grateful. But, they still couldn’t help from feeling bad for keeping secrets sometimes.

"Then, let’s go now..." Leslie was quietly amazed by how good Andrian and Harper as parents were, "Perhaps, they’ll return... later this afternoon."

"Yes, let’s go."

Instead of having Logan or anyone else driving them, Calix sat behind the wheels while Leslie was seated in the front passenger seat. They didn’t bring Mrs. An along.

The time was a quarter past ten. The traffic on Sunday morning was smooth, allowing Calix and Leslie to reach Phoenix Heights quicker than expected.

"Calix... how should we start?"

Looking at Calix, Leslie threw him a question. He had just driven past the main gate of the luxury community compound. They would arrive at the ancestral home in less than ten minutes.

The dazzling sunlight beamed through the rows of trees towering on both sides of the roads, scattering its sparkles on the ground. The vibrant flowers danced as the gentle breeze brushed past them.

The scenery exuded peace but, did nothing to alleviate Leslie’s worry.

Calix glanced at Leslie, clearly seeing the creases of concern on her brows. He smiled while replying, "I’ll tell Grandma about our encounter six years ago. Then, I’ll bring up about Calliope."

Calix’s usually calm voice had a hint of distress. Despite knowing how sensible his grandmother was, he was still worried about opening up on this subject.

"...that should be fine."

Leslie nodded, agreeing with Calix. They should start from the beginning, the night that linked them together before he was forced into a coma.

Soon, Calix and Leslie reached the ancestral home. The community guard post notified the home’s front gate guards about the spouses’ arrival.

"Second Young Master! Second Young Madam! What brings you here?"

One of the senior staff greeted Calix and Leslie at the entryway.

"We’re here just for a short visit," replied Calix while carrying Leslie in her arms, "Bring the wheelchair here."

Butler Gu came rushing from behind, followed by his close aid. The butler learned Calix made a phone call to the ancestral home earlier. Yet, the young man said nothing about coming.

"Where’s my grandmother? My wife and I need to talk to her," said Calix without beating around the bush. He put Leslie in the wheelchair pushed by another staff.

Butler Gu blinked, sensing the urgency in Calix’s voice. He signaled everyone to leave which they promptly abid.

"Old Madam Xu is in her greenhouse. Will you be going there?"

The greenhouse in the backyard was one of Old Madam Xu’s favorite places. She often spent her morning and evening there, having tea or tending to the plants. Sometimes, she also played Go and chess with her friends there.

"We’ll head there," Calix swiftly decided. After pausing hesitantly, he quietly added, "Uncle Gu, you don’t have to escort us. Make sure no one is around too."

"Understand, Second Young Master."

Butler Gu sensed Calix and Leslie’s surprise visit had a hidden meaning. But, it was not his place to inquire about it. He simply obeyed his young master’s order.

Calix started pushing Leslie to the enclosed corridor leading to the greenhouse. They didn’t have to go through the outdoors.

"I haven’t visited the... greenhouse after I woke up..."

Leslie’s words earned faint laughter from Calix, understanding what she meant.

"You chose to sleep in the open air instead of the greenhouse, Mrs. Xu," said Calix, referring to the time Leslie spent the night surrounded by the flower beds.

"Hehe, I couldn’t do it... when I’m just a normal human..."

"Well, it has been months ah," Calix chuckled, amused by his recollections of memories, "My ghost wife has returned to her human state."

"Why? Want me to... haunt you?" Leslie pretended to pout.

"Hahaha! No! Don’t haunt me ah."

Leslie smiled in helplessness as Calix continued laughing. The merry sound bounced off the walls, softening the ambiance around them.

Indeed, time flowed by so quickly. Their relationship only grew closer in the meantime.

Neither Calix nor Leslie could believe how quickly time had passed. Both of them still remember the uncanny way they met on the day they got married.

The nervous Leslie became more anxious when suddenly Calix fainted because he thought she was a ghost. Fortunately, it didn’t take her long to befriend him.

’Before... I never thought I’d be this comfortable with Calix.’

Curling up her lips, Leslie needed to thank Calix for being approachable and nonjudgmental. She didn’t have much problem to talk about her issues with him.

Perhaps... she would indeed reveal her true identity to him.

’Let’s think about it later. I’m still having doubts.’

While Leslie was immersed in her thinking, Calix had already pushed her passing the greenhouse door. The pleasant scents of flowers lured her out of her trance, followed by a familiar voice calling them.

"Calix? Leslie? Why didn’t you tell me you’re coming?"

Surprised yet delighted, Old Madam Xu hurriedly stood up from the flower beds. She was trimming the leaves when she heard footsteps coming inside the greenhouse.

Old Madam Xu was busy tending to the plants from early morning. She didn’t hear about Calix’s phone call to the ancestral home.

"Good morning, Grandma..." Leslie smilingly greeted the old lady, "You’re sweating..."

"Hehe, your old grandma is just busy," Old Madam Xu stared at her gloved hands, holding back from reaching out to her granddaughter-in-law, "Let’s talk there. Calix, push Leslie to the table."

Old Madam Xu pointed to where a bamboo table and chairs were placed. A pot of tea, a jug of plain water and two plates of confectioneries were placed on the table.

Taking off the dirty gloves, Old Madam Xu turned around to head to the garden faucet. She should freshen herself up before entertaining the newlyweds.

Calix refrained from rolling his eyes. His grandmother’s attention only fell on Leslie as if he didn’t exist. She only acknowledged him when giving him an order.

Tsk tsk tsk.

"Yes, Empress Dowager Xu," replied Calix, purposely dragging the end of his tone.

"Don’t annoy me so early ah," warned Old Madam Xu without looking at her second grandson.

The old lady wouldn’t ever expect what kind of thing the spouses intended to talk to her.

When the matter was finally brought up, one prayed her blood pressure wouldn’t spike so abruptly.
