Chapter 233: What Kind of Father Would He Be?

"Did you sleep well?"

Calix inquired as he pushed Leslie’s wheelchair toward the dining room. Aunt Wendy had already served breakfast there. The clock was pointing to eight-thirty.

Tilting her head, Leslie threw a look at Calix. Faint laughter escaped her lips, expressing how funny she thought his question was.

"Did you forget... you’ve asked me... that already?"

Leslie’s teasing earned a helpless smile from Calix. Raising his brows, he replied, "I think I asked that thrice already, didn’t I?"

"Hehe, yes..."

Sleeping soundly at five, Leslie woke up again before eight. Calix came knocking on her door when Mrs. An helped her to get ready.

CEO Xu had dark circles under his eyes. Albeit faintly, they were enough to tell anyone he had a sleepless night.

As for Leslie, she didn’t feel as burdened as before. Learning more information about Charlene’s past devastated her but, she took it as a chance to right what was wrong.

Soon, both Calix and Leslie began enjoying their breakfast. Aunt Wendy prepared some chicken porridge, half-boiled eggs and steamed buns. The common yet delicious food enticed their appetite.

Halfway through their meal, Calix finally brought up the topic from yesterday. He kept his eyes on Leslie as he asked, "How about telling Grandma today?"

Leslie blinked, already expecting such a question from Calix. Like her, he also wanted to speed up the process of getting Calliope to live with them.

"Yes, let’s do that... Then, we can focus on... getting Calliope comfortable... with us..."

Nodding, Leslie agreed without having any second thoughts. Her heart was aligned with Calix’s wishes.

"Okay. Let’s head there soon."

A change of plan was bound to happen. But, Leslie and Calix hoped to make Calliope’s transition as smoothly as possible.

The little one treated them well yet, it didn’t mean she would easily accept them as her parents. Not after five years of abandonment despite it was not Calix or Leslie’s fault.

Curling up his lips, Calix felt better. He silently thanked Leslie.

After parting ways with Leslie last night, Calix spent his time sleepless. He actually wished to check on her but, he forfeited the idea.

Whether Leslie was sleepless like him or not, Calix understood she might need some time for herself. The nature of their conversation undoubtedly troubled their hearts.

"Calix, don’t worry too much..."

Leslie’s words brought Calix out of his momentary trance. Placing down the porridge spoon, he eyed her with wonder. The way he naively looked lured chuckles out of her lips.

"Do you still... feel guilty toward me?"

The blame didn’t lie on Calix yet, he was deeply concerned and remorseful for forcing himself on her – Charlene. Moreover, after he found out about the ongoing and long torment before Calliope’s birth.

Understanding what Leslie meant, Calix stiffly nodded. He averted his gaze from her, not daring to look into her clear eyes.

"...before, I didn’t think too much about that night," admitted Calix, still unable to return Leslie’s gaze on him, "Even if I ever thought about it, I convinced myself... it’s not my fault."

Calix was ashamed to think like that but, it was the truth. He knew someone orchestrated the situation in the background.

Both of them were victims, puppets under the perpetrator’s mercy.

Not only Calix was enraged toward the mysterious force but, he was also disgusted at the Li family.

His family showered him with unconditional support during his recuperation. He also received excellent care from his team of medical providers and therapists.

But...

She didn’t have the same luxury. During her most vulnerable moment as a first-time mother, her family continuously let her down.

"...en?"

Blinking, Calix sensed a warm and soft touch on his face. He lifted his eyes, realizing that Leslie placed her palm on his right cheek.

Leslie’s smile was tinted with sorrow. She acknowledged that the scar in Calix’s heart wouldn’t easily be erased by forgiveness.

’She knew about this... No wonder she left me such a request.’

Instead of simply leaving, Charlene earnestly requested Leslie to relay forgiveness on her behalf. It was as if she knew that the man would be ridden with guilt and despair.

"Calix... please take care of me... and Calliope well..."

Leslie wouldn’t persuade Calix to let go of his remorse. Everything was still too raw for him. He should be allowed to process his grief at his own pace.

If she forced him, it might backfire.

Calix thinned his lips in displeasure toward himself. He couldn’t believe how forgiving Leslie was to him. Her voice was never tainted by disdain, silently reassuring him that she had indeed forgiven him.

But...

He couldn’t relieve himself of the remorse. Not yet.

Calix covered the back of Leslie’s hand with his broad palm. Sensing how prickly hot his eyes were, his whisper was laced with resolve.

"I will take care of you and our daughter well... Leslie, you don’t need to believe my words. I will show you that... you and Calliope can depend on me."

Always.

To the eternity.

Leslie nodded, flashing Calix with her brightest grin. She repeatedly nodded, eagerly hoping to see the other side of him.

Calix was always a reliable man but, what kind of father would he be?

The one who always played with his little princess?

The one who planned daddy-daughter time together?

The one who rearranged his own busy schedule to witness her first recital?

Hehe, she couldn’t wait to see that.

Her child’s soul was in his child’s body. Despite that, Leslie wished to only focus on the positive sides. Even Charlene encouraged her to live her second life to the best of her ability.

Leslie whispered back, "Before that, we need... Calliope to live with us..."

"...oh, yeah."

Smiling sheepishly, Calix silently listened to Leslie’s laughter. The spouses exchanged another gaze, quietly relaying their wishes toward each other.

"I think I’ll receive another earful from Grandma," said Calix once he calmed down. He resumed feeding Leslie.

"...because of Calliope and... what happened between us... years ago?" Leslie quickly guesses.

"Yeah..." Calix winced, already picturing the gravity of his grandmother’s ire, "She’ll be a fire-breathing dragon ah. I need to be careful."

"Hahaha! She surely will..."

Unable to hold herself back, Leslie couldn’t help but imagine the small and frail Old Madam Xu smacking the tall Calix’s back.

For sure, CEO Xu couldn’t escape his grandmother’s wrath easily ah.
