Chapter 235: Uh-oh, This Smelled Trouble
Calix moved one chair away before pushing Leslie closer to the table. Old Madam Xu swiftly approached them after washing her hands. Her wrinkly face beamed with a delightful glow.
Old Madam Xu didn’t expect to see her grandson and grandaughter-in-law again this soon. They had just gathered for a family meal two nights ago.
Did they come here for something important?
Or, to just spend time with her?
Either way, Old Madam Xu was glad. She planned to stuff Leslie and Calix with delicious food during lunch. Of course, everything would be prepared by the chefs instead of her.
"Did you two enjoy your getaway yesterday?" asked Old Madam Xu, recalling Calix’s plan to bring Leslie out of the city, "Where did you go? You haven’t shared with us ah."
Old Madam Xu and Harper had been waiting for updates from Calix in their family chatroom. The two ladies were eager to know where and what the spouses did during the young man’s birthday.
Unfortunately, Calix didn’t tell them anything until now. Old Madam Xu and Harper wanted to pester him but, they ended up refraining themselves.
This should be the newlyweds’ first getaway together ah. They shouldn’t be disturbed.
Leslie and Calix exchange a glance, understanding that the news of them visiting the orphanage hadn’t reached Old Madam Xu.
Aside from the private nurses, Calix’s bodyguards, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond, no one else knew about it. Seemed like the old lady didn’t try inquiring from Aunt Wendy at least.
"Leslie and I visited an orphanage, Grandma," Calix paused, feeling a bit tensed just by saying it, "We threw a party there with the children."
"Oh? That sounds nice!" Old Madam Xu raised her brows, foreseeing nothing of this at all. She sat right opposite Leslie, "Did you have fun? When did you decide that?"
Old Madam Xu had never heard Calix doing something like this. Her second grandson regularly donated to various charities but, not organizing a party at any care home.
What led to the decision, en?
Calix and Leslie looked at one another once more. They broke their eye contact soon after, focusing back on the cheerful Old Madam Xu.
Certainly, the old lady simply thought Calix wanted to bring happiness to the children on his birthday.
Taking a deep breath, Calix clenched and unclenched his hands together. His restless act was hidden under the table as tension continued overtaking his heart.
Until...
"...?"
Blinking, Calix traced his gaze to his left hand. Surprise flitted in his eyes at the sight of Leslie’s right hand on the back of his.
The faint warmth slowly seeped into him, unknowingly helping to ease his worries.
Calix let his gaze travel to Leslie’s countenance, finding her gentle smile drawn on her lips.
’We will be fine.’
For some reason, Calix assumed Leslie was telling him that.
’Yes, we will be fine.’
Calix raised his eyes, locking them with his grandmother’s. Concealed by the bamboo table, he moved his hand before grasping Leslie’s in his.
"We’re here to talk about one of the children. As for now, please keep what we’re going to say secret, Grandma."
Firmness enveloped Calix’s tone, showing little hints of his previous tension. Relieved by the change, Leslie deepened her smile.
Aside from them, there was no one else in this greenhouse. Even if other people saw them through the massive glass panels, they wouldn’t know the core of the discussion.
Sensing the seriousness of the topic, Old Madam Xu’s countenance shifted from smiling to worrying. She noticed how strained her grandson seemed to be before he regained his composure.
"Calix, what about the children? I mean, the child you mentioned."
Old Madam Xu instantly thought of the possibility Calix wanted to be an exclusive patron to the child. But, something was amiss when he requested to keep it secret.
Was there anything else?
Widening her eyes, Old Madam Xu abruptly asked, "Are you two thinking... to adopt a child?"
As soon as those words left her mouth, Old Madam Xu was startled by her own thoughts. She wanted to retract them but, Calix’s nod froze her.
"...what? You two... want to adopt a child?"
Old Madam Xu blinked, wondering if she had seen Calix’s small action wrong. Her reaction was caused by the surprise, not because she was opposed to the idea.
Calix felt bad when seeing the look of confusion on Old Madam Xu’s face. But, he couldn’t stop now.
Parting his lips, Calix continued talking, "Grandma, don’t you want to know why I chose Leslie as my wife?"
"...huh?"
The sudden change in topic baffled Old Madam Xu. She blankly stared at Calix, wondering what was wrong with her grandson’s head.
"Did you lose another screw, Calix?" Old Madam Xu sighed, expressing her discontent, "You’ve just talked about the child. Now, you brought up about your marriage."
What game Calix was playing? Old Madam Xu held back from flicking her grandson’s forehead.
Calix chuckled out of helplessness, thinking how disorganized he was. Yet, he continued charging forward instead of backtracking.
Well, he better let these all out of his system. He would deal with receiving blows and smacks from his grandmother later.
"I met Leslie on the night before my accident. We’re both drugged by someone."
"...what? W-what did you say?"
Old Madam Xu’s jaw dropped. She could easily fit a tangerine inside her gaping mouth.
Calix encountered Leslie... on that night six years ago?
Drugged? What kind of drug? Who drugged them?
Under Old Madam Xu’s bewildered gaze, Calix dropped another bombshell.
"I’ve just found out we have a child. She’s currently at the orphanage."
"WHAT?"
They had a child?
What kind of joke was this?!
Old Madam Xu froze, including her brain. She was as still as a robot as the shock had yet to sink in. Her pupils suddenly went over her eyeballs as her body swayed.
"G-grandma!"
"Grandma!"
Calix abruptly stood from his seat, extending both hands forward.
Leslie’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets, fearing of what she might see.
Old Madam Xu vaguely heard Leslie and Calix shouting, desperately calling her. Fighting against the shock of her life, she smacked the bamboo table.
BAM!
Calix and Leslie flinched. The former froze awkwardly as he tried to grab his almost-fainting grandmother earlier before she abruptly snapped herself awake.
Narrowing her eyes, Old Madam Xu frostily glared at Calix. Each of her words was laced with ice.
"Care to explain more, dear grandson?"
"...yes."
Uh-oh.
This smelled trouble.
