Chapter 218: Immortalizing the Precious Moment

"Mr. Xu."

Director Li gestured to her office, welcoming Calix. The man headed inside first, followed by the older woman. She closed the door shut.

Most people were outside but, Director Li didn’t want to risk anyone hearing them. None of the staff and children knew about Calliope’s true relationship with the Xu spouses.

"Do you want to talk about Calliope returning to your family?" asked Director Li without beating around the bush. She stared at Calix who sat opposite her.

"Yes," Calix nodded once, his brows tensed, "About our daughter’s return."

Director Li raised her brows, already anticipating the topic, "You may talk, Mr. Xu."

"Thank you. I want to..."

While Calix and Director Li talked inside the office, Leslie continued having fun outdoors. The cheerful air of celebration shrouded her, uplifting her mood further.

The children went all out playing in the bouncy castle. Some of them got hooked by the booths manned by the volunteers. The others kept going to the buffet table, unable to resist the dessert temptations.

Mrs. An was at the face-painting station. Leslie encouraged her to enjoy the day instead of just taking care of her. She was happy to see Mrs. An enjoyed playing with the children.

"Aunty! Aunty!"

The familiar milky voice cast a smile on Leslie’s face. Throwing her gaze into a direction, she saw Calliope deng deng deng running toward her. Two girls followed from behind.

In no time, the children reached Leslie.

"Yes, Poppy? Do you... want your Mimo back?"

Leslie softened her voice. She gestured at the toy Mimo still sitting on her lap while the soul one clung to Calliope’s back.

"No, Mimo can accompany Aunty," Calliope shook her tiny head, causing her pigtails to sway, "Aunty, meet my friends. They’re Daisy and Ruby. We share the same room!"

The two girls smiled sheepishly at Leslie before introducing themselves. They were two years older than Calliope.

"Hello, Daisy and Ruby..." Leslie warmly greeted the children, thinking of how well-behaved they appeared, "Did you choose... those tattoos? They look great... Flowers and... butterflies? Oh? What else?"

Both Daisy and Ruby had just left the temporary tattoo station. They marked their arms and the back of their hands with several prints in the colors pink, yellow and blue.

"Ribbons and ice-creams too," replied Ruby shyly. Lifting her arms, she showed the tattoos to Leslie, "Look, Aunty."

"Me too, Aunty," Daisy did the same, sounding eager to show off her choices, "Hehe, I got a cake next to the ribbon. Aren’t they pretty?"

"They are pretty..." Leslie chuckled, appreciating the glimpses of happiness on the girls’ countenances, "Will you get... your face painted next? They look... awesome too..."

Leslie referred to the children who lined up at the face painting station.

Every one of them squealed in delight as they got their face drawn with colors. They also posed for photos when asked by the photographer, making the situation livelier.

"We will! But, don’t you want to get some tattoos, Aunty?" exclaimed Daisy, the outgoing one aside from Calliope.

"Poppy wants some too," Calliope straightened her arms forward, showing her blemish-free skin, "Aunty, let’s get them together?"

Leslie blinked, never expecting Calliope to invite her along. Ruby and Daisy nodded, agreeing with the little one.

"We’ve got ours but, Poppy hasn’t," Ruby spoke again after being silent for a while, "Aunty, come with us too."

"Okay, that sounds... interesting," Leslie nodded, swiftly agreeing with the children. Her gaze moved to Calliope, "Which tattoos do you wanna have?"

"Hehehe~ Strawberry and bunny tattoo!" Calliope clapped her hands, happy with Leslie’s answer, "Of course! A fox like Mimo too!"

"How cute! Okay... let’s get them..."

The three children offered to push Leslie but, she simply said she could maneuver it with the knob. They went ohs-and-ahs seeing how advanced the wheelchair used by the lady.

"Can it turn into a robot?" asked Calliope as they headed to the temporary tattoo station, her eyes glimmering in wonder, "Like that one movie?"

"Hehe, so far it can’t..." Leslie chuckled, amused by her daughter’s question, "But, who knows? Maybe... in the future?"

Leslie and Calliope chose the same tattoos. The volunteer procured similar prints before pasting them on the mother and daughter’s hands and lower arms.

"Wow~ Same ones like Aunty’s!" exclaimed Calliope, overcome by excitement, "Even the colors match!"

Unable to hold herself back, Leslie laughed more than usual. She stretched out the hand where she got tattooed, placing it next to Calliope who did the same.

"They are cute... The fox and bunny... share strawberries..."

The volunteer pasted the tattoos in the order of the fox, the strawberries and the bunny. The two animals seemed as if they were sharing the juicy berries.

"Mrs. Xu, should we take photos?" inquired Mrs. An. She approached her employer once she noticed Leslie at the temporary tattoo station, "I’ll call the photographer."

"Sure, that’s a nice idea..."

Leslie swiftly grabbed the chance to immortalize the moment through photos. They would be her first pictures with Calliope in this world.

’I should print the photos. Maybe make an album along the way.’

Leslie didn’t know when else she could meet Calliope. Her desire to start living together with her daughter kept on rising.

’It’s kind of nerve wrecking but, I can’t wait for tonight.’

Leslie was unsure what Calix wanted to talk about but, she roughly guessed it was something related to Calliope. Perhaps, even herself included.

Calix was a smart and discerning man. Even though he didn’t ask her openly, Leslie was certain he had questions of his own.

And...

If the author used the common plot of such stories, he might have been involved in this matter from the start.

’Maybe, that’s why he went all out of his way to visit this place before.’

Smiling at herself, Leslie focused on the moment. She saw Mrs. An return with the photographer.

"Mrs. Xu, wanna some photos taken?" the photographer gestured at the camera, "Here, here, give me your best pose!"

"Poppy, stand closer... to Aunty..." Leslie gently tapped on Calliope’s back as the photographer positioned the camera, "Come, show your... arm... Oh, can I hug... you?"

Leslie wanted to make the photo special. She also missed hugging Calliope despite already doing that before – while crying in sadness because she couldn’t hold herself back.

To Leslie’s delight, Calliope quickly agreed, bobbing her head up and down.

"Hehe, okay, Aunty~"

Calliope stood in front of the wheelchair before Leslie draped one arm to hug her from behind. The little one’s scent gently drifted in the air, tickling Leslie’s heart.

"Let’s do it... like this?"

Leslie raised her lower arm vertically, clearly showing the tattoos to the photographer.

"Oh! Okay!"

Calliope swiftly mimicked Leslie’s pose. Giggling, she moved her arm closer to touch the latter’s, displaying the prints side by side. Her action gained a fond smile from Leslie.

"Countdown!"

The photographer shouted, earning laughter from both Leslie and Calliope.

"Poppy, smile... at the camera..."

"Hehe, Aunty too~"

The photographer began counting. Leslie unconsciously moved closer to Calliope while the little one slightly leaned against her.

"Three... two... one!"

Kacha!

Unaware by Leslie and Calliope, Calix witnessed the moment they had their photo taken. He had just came out from the orphanage building.

Their bright and joyful smiles stirred something in his heart.
