Chapter 219: Afraid I’d Really Toss You Away?
"Hey! You guys take photos together? Count me in too!"
Calix exclaimed as he strode to where Leslie and Calliope were. His voice echoed above the distinct chatter and music, catching their attention and prompting them to look at him.
"Uncle, you’re back!"
Driven by excitement, Calliope waved both hands at Calix. Leslie welcomed him back with a smile. The man stopped a few feet away from them.
Aside from the photographer, Mrs. An, Ruby and Daisy also were still around. The private nurse greeted Calix while the children only stared at him.
"We got matching... tattoos so, we took photos... together."
While saying so, Leslie showed Calix the fox, bunny and strawberries prints on her arm. Calliope mimicked her action, smiling brightly.
Calix raised his brows, looking from his wife’s arm to his daughter’s. Seemed like they got similar temporary tattoos from the station. Both of them were beaming in delight, amusing him.
"I want matching tattoos too. Should I get them?"
Calix glanced from the station back to Leslie and Calliope. Both of them nodded, the little one bobbed her head up and down repeatedly.
"Uncle, go! Then we can take photos!"
Calliope curled both of her small hands into fists, shaking them as if to encourage Calix. Her action earned laughter from the adults, including Mrs. An and the photographer.
"Which tattoos did you get?" Calix reached out for Leslie’s arm, enveloping her wrist with his grasp, "Oh, these are cute."
Leslie blinked, sensing a particular warmth seeped into the pulse before traveling to her heart. Perceiving a slight heat on her cheeks, she quietly watched Calix’s broad palm around her wrist.
His action only became more natural now. Even though she didn’t dislike it, she couldn’t help but feel conscious about his touch.
"Y-you should pick... the same ones... Then we’re all matching..."
Slightly flustered, Leslie shifted her eyes from Calix’s hand up to his face.
"Well, I’ll go and get them," Calix slowly released Leslie’s hand. He threw a glance at the photographer, "Can you wait? I’ll get the tattoos first."
"Sure, Mr. Xu," replied the photographer swiftly.
Spinning on the heels of his sports shoes, Calix headed to the temporary tattoo station. Only a few children lined up there. The rest scattered to the bouncy castle, the face painting station and the buffet table.
Leslie withdrew her gaze from Calix’s back to Ruby and Daisy. Smiling at them, she asked, "Do you want... to take photos... with Poppy?"
"Want!"
"I want to."
Beaming, the two children nodded their little heads. Calliope shrieked and danced in excitement, happy to pose together with Ruby and Daisy.
Leslie told the photographer to capture the photos of these three friends. All of them huddled together while proudly showing their tattoos.
The other children were still very energized more than ever. None of them showed signs of sleepiness despite their nap time had passed.
The caretaker and other staff also didn’t force the children to nap. After all, the orphanage rarely had a big celebration party like this. This was their biggest and most lavish one so far.
"I’m back!"
Calix ran to Leslie and Calliope. The children had just finished taking the eighth photo. They had fun posing in front of the supportive photographer.
"So fast?"
Leslie was amused to see how delighted Calix was. The echoes of his laughter reverberated alongside the merry music and chatter.
"Hey, hey! Let’s take photos now!"
Ruby and Daisy stepped away from Calliope, telling the little one that they would wait at the bouncy castle. Calliope agreed, planning to join her friends as soon as she could.
"Poppy... come here..." Leslie waved one hand, gesturing at Calliope to stand between her and Calix, "Look, Uncle got... the same cute tattoos..."
"Yeah, here, Poppy," Calix crouched next to Leslie’s wheelchair, letting his knees touch the grass, "Let’s play together later."
"Okay~"
Calliope comfortably nestled between Calix and Leslie, joyfully boasting their tattoos off. All three of them looked at the photographer as he called for their attention.
"Countdown! Three... two... one!"
Kacha!
Leslie and Calix thanked the photographer after he captured several photos of them. He moved away, intending to take a break by having delicious food and drinks served at the buffet table.
Calix was still crouching next to Leslie’s wheelchair. He looked at Calliope, "What should we play? Ah, no hide-and-seek, okay?"
Calix’s words reminded Leslie of what she had just heard from Director Li. At the same time, Calliope burst out laughing as if the man’s question was funny.
"Poppy wanna play with Ruby and Daisy. There, at the castle," Calliope pointed to the inflatable castle where most children gathered, "Uncle and Aunty, wanna join us?"
Coming up with an idea, Calix smiled lopsidedly at Leslie, "Let’s. I can carry you into the castle. We don’t need to ride the slides. How about sitting in the ball pit pool?"
"Oh~ Aunty! Come! Come! That’ll be fun!"
Calix’s suggestion earned delightful responses from Calliope. She placed her small hands on Leslie’s lap, eyeing her with anticipation.
Leslie chuckled in helplessness when three pairs of eyes—including the soul Mimo’s—were staring openly at her. She had a hunch that none of them would take no as the answer.
"Hehe, alright... Let’s play there..."
"Yayy!"
Jumping up and down, Calliope’s merry laughter mellowed Leslie’s heart into a puddle of honey. She loved seeing the look of genuine happiness on her daughter’s face no matter when and where.
"Let’s go!"
Calix announced before pushing Leslie’s wheelchair toward the bouncy castle. Calliope swiftly tagged along. She didn’t forget to get the toy Mimo from Leslie’s lap, not knowing that its soul was lying tummy-down on her small head.
Once they reached outside the colorful inflatable castle, Calix carefully carried Leslie to the giant ball pit pool. The children either played there or climbed to get to the slides.
"A-ah! Calix!"
"Oh no! Aunty!"
Guffawing, Calix pretended to throw Leslie into the pool full of colorful balls. She quickly tightened her arms around his neck while Calliope shrieked in surprise.
"Hahaha! Why so shocked ah? Afraid I’d really toss you away?"
Squinting her eyes, Leslie bit her lower lip. Calix’s continuous laughter irritated her.
He did this on purpose!
"Uncle! So bad ah! Put Aunty down!"
Calliope hit one of Calix’s legs while holding the toy Mimo in one hand, punishing him for playing a trick on Leslie. Her action only enticed Calix to laugh louder.
"Put me down..." pouting, Leslie smacked Calix’s chest, "You act like a child ah..."
"Hehehe~ Yes, yes."
Calix lowered Leslie to the bottom, letting her be surrounded by the balls. Some bounced around them, moving in different directions.
"Poppy, aren’t you going... to play with your friends?" asked Leslie as she sat in the pool, focusing on Calliope who hadn’t left, "Where are Ruby... and Daisy?"
"I think they... Ah! Uncle!"
"Calix!"
"Hahaha! It’s raining! It’s raining ah!"
Out of a sudden, countless balls rained from the sky courtesy of Calix, catching Leslie and Calliope off guard. None of them realized when he gathered those balls into a plastic basin before showering them onto the lady and the child.
The spontaneous moment was timely captured by the photographer.
