Chapter 217: The Mother and Daughter’s Natural Affinity

"Aunty, say ah~ Yummy cake is coming!"

Calliope cut through the slice of cake using a fork before bringing the small bite to Leslie’s mouth. Her glimmering eyes and beaming smile revealed how much she wanted to feed the lady.

"Oho? You’re trying to feed my wife ah?"

Calix commented while raising his brows, acting as if he was surprised. His countenance was as bright as the little girl’s. He glanced from the giggling Leslie to the grinning Calliope.

Laughing along, Director Li and Mrs. An observed their interaction. Three other children joined them at the table. They were more focused on enjoying the delicious cake and other foods, cream and oil staining their small mouths.

"Poppy has promised Aunty," replied Calliope eloquently, puffing up her chest while responding to Calix, "Aunty is sick. Let Poppy help Aunty to eat."

"Thank you, Poppy..." chuckling, Leslie smiled fondly at Calliope, "Let me taste the cake..."

"Okay~"

Calliope pushed the fork closer to Leslie’s mouth while being careful not to stab the latter’s lips. She giggled as she watched the lady slowly munch and swallow the cake.

"How is it, Aunty? Delicious?"

Calliope asked Leslie in wonder. She didn’t know that the soul Mimo was playing with her hair. Previously, the crochet fox toy rolled on her little head, acting so carefree. Its body was still on Leslie’s lap.

"It’s nice and sweet... Poppy, you should eat it... too..."

"Okay~"

Calliope started eating the cake, targeting the strawberry slice on the cream frosting first. She did a little dance once she tasted the sweet and juicy fruit.

"Aunty, want strawberry? It’s so sweet ah."

Tilting up her chin, Calliope looked at Leslie. Their eyes immediately met as the latter had been staring at her from the beginning, enjoying the little one’s adorable antics.

Hehe, Poppy was indeed Poppy, a strawberry lover no matter where she was.

Just like a certain someone sitting next to her.

’Thank goodness. She really looks happy here.’

Leslie was immensely delighted because Calliope only showed positive signs as they formed a relationship. Perhaps this was the effect of natural affinity mentioned by Mimo before.

Even though Calliope remembered nothing about Leslie, she would still easily be drawn to her mother. This helped them to reconnect in this brand new world.

No matter what, Leslie was unwilling to confuse Calliope with the changes in their lives. A child as young as her daughter wouldn’t understand the concept of transmigration.

"Poppy likes strawberry... en? You should... have them all... Aunty can eat... at home..."

Leslie gently refused, simply wanting Calliope to enjoy every bit of strawberries she had right now. But, the little one still took one and brought it to the former’s lips.

"Aunty, try one ah," Calliope giggled, trying to convince Leslie to have the strawberry.

"Wifey, eat it," Calix spoke as he kept his eyes on his wife and daughter, his face was still beaming. He inevitably softened his voice, "Poppy wants you to try it."

Leslie blinked, looking from Calliope to Calix. She didn’t expect he was still looking at her and the child. He had yet to touch any of his food.

Was he observing them?

Was it because...

Curling up her lips, Leslie stopped herself from having useless thoughts. She hadn’t forgotten what she promised herself this morning – to enjoy the day and spend as much time as she could with Calliope.

The rest? They could wait.

"Okay, Aunty will eat... it..." Leslie chuckled in helplessness. She randomly caressed the toy Mimo sitting on her lap, "But, this one is... the last... Poppy, you should eat... more..."

"Yayy! Aunty, come~ Have one more!"

Calliope’s cry of delight mellowed Leslie’s heart. She let the little one feed her the strawberry once again. While interacting with the little one, she vaguely sensed Calix’s gaze on her.

What kind of face did he make?

A normal one? Or, filled with confusion?

Leslie inwardly laughed at herself. She created this situation herself. She should be prepared to receive any suspicions directed by Calix.

"Start eating, Poppy... Enjoy the food..." Leslie thanked Calliope for the strawberry. She urged the little turnip head to dive into the delicious meals.

"Okay, Aunty~"

Calliope obediently followed Leslie’s encouragement. She happily ate the strawberry cake, even singing from time to time.

"Leslie, do you want some dumplings with soup?" said Calix, trying to get Leslie’s attention, "They are small and soft enough for you to eat."

Leslie didn’t eat much during breakfast. Calix couldn’t help but wonder if she was hungry. He had specifically told the event planner to prepare suitable food for her, knowing she couldn’t eat much solid food yet.

Withdrawing her eyes from Calliope, Leslie grinned at Calix, "That’s nice... I kinda starving now..."

Calix rolled his eyes while pushing the bowl closer to Leslie. He deliberately fanned over the bowl, trying to spread its aromatic and mouthwatering scent to entice her appetite.

"Think of your stomach too. Everyone is already eating now. The dumpling or the soup?"

Which one did she want to taste first?

Leslie chuckled, helplessly thinking of CEO Xu’s tendency to nag.

"The dumpling..."

Thus, CEO Xu began his usual task of feeding his wife. He didn’t even hesitate to show such a gesture in front of Director Li who sat at the same table.

"Want this minced meat tomato pasta?"

"How about this pudding?"

"Mango or watermelon juice?"

Director Li was caught in wonder. She was amazed to see how well Mr. Xu treated his sickly wife. Her eyes shifted from the spouses to the little girl sitting next to Mrs. Xu.

Calliope had finished her food. She was happily chatting with her fellow friends, they planned to play at the bouncy castle soon.

’It’ll be good if she lives with them.’

Calliope’s life would certainly have had more positive changes if the loving husband and wife raised her. Perhaps, the trajectory of her life would reach unprecedented heights.

Something that might be impossible if she kept living in this orphanage.

’I hope Mr. Xu will bring her home soon. She’s already warming up to them.’

Director Li couldn’t imagine how Calliope would respond once she learned Mr. and Mrs. Xu were her biological parents. She wished the little one would only have favorable reactions.

Soon, most children finished eating. They started running back to the bouncy castle while others headed to the stations. Their merry laughter and happy chatter almost drowned the upbeat music.

"Leslie, do you want to rest?" asked Calix while stacking the disposable plates and bowls together, "Or, do you wanna watch the kids play?"

Leslie appeared more cheerful than usual but, Calix was still worried about her well-being. She often took some rest when the time approaching noon.

"I’ll stay and watch... the children... Not that tired yet... Thank you for asking... "

Leslie appreciated the concern behind Calix’s question but, she was telling the truth. She was still energized enough to join in the festivity.

"Alright. Stay here. Tell Mrs. An if you’re tired," Calix hesitated a moment before resuming talking, "I have something to discuss with Director Li. I’ll head inside first."

"...oh, okay."

Leslie blinked, wondering what Calix wanted to talk to Director Li about. She unconsciously wandered her eyes to where Calliope vanished with her friends.
