Chapter 214: No Judgment or Doubt Clouded His Eyes
"Sorry... I cried a lot..."
Leslie awkwardly admitted to Calix. Crouching opposite the chair she occupied, he gently wiped her face with a damp towel.
"What’s the sorry for? You’re just so excited to meet the girl, isn’t it?"
Chuckling, Calix softened his voice as he tried to coax Leslie. He ran the towel on her face before pulling it away.
Leslie cried for quite some time while hugging Calliope. The little one was surprised but, she assumed it was due to the former’s sickness.
Everyone else also pointed out nothing, just letting Leslie hug Calliope despite the adults feeling something was off from the way the former behaved.
Once Leslie was done crying, she asked to wash her face. Calix offered to bring her to the guest room mentioned by Director Li. There was a small en-suite washroom there.
While Director Li and the rest were entertaining the children including Calliope outside, Calix carried Leslie to the guest room. He left the wheelchair outdoors.
Leslie silently watched Calix placing the damp towel inside a small bowl of water. She coughed twice, hesitating to verbalize what was going on in her mind.
’No... I better not say anything yet. We’ll talk tonight. Let’s do it later.’
Slightly shaking her head, Leslie persuaded herself to be patient.
"Should we go outside... now?" Leslie glanced at the windows. She saw the children surrounding the inflatable bouncy castle, "They seem can’t wait to... play..."
"Let’s," Calix nodded, agreeing with Leslie. Rising to his feet, he reached out to carry her in his arms, "The food and drinks are all prepared too."
Leslie let Calix pick her up from the chair. As time went on, she grew more comfortable being physically closer to the man. Yet, she couldn’t deny how her heart beat weirdly from time to time.
"I want to walk and run... to feel the grass and the... breeze..." sighing, Leslie lamented about her lack of physical strength, "Summer’s coming..."
"You’re doing good. You can stand still longer than before, isn’t it?" Calix swiftly put Leslie’s worries away, reminding herself of her progress so far, "By summer, you can walk. Well, if you’re slow, I’ll accompany you ah."
"Hehe... I thought you’d leave me then... running on the sand yourself..."
Humming, Calix smirked. Mischief glinted in his eyes, "Well, that sounds like a good idea."
"You dare?" Leslie hissed, glaring at Calix. Her swollen eyes displayed a lingering redness.
"Hahaha! No! What if you tattle to Grandma? She’s your greatest ally ah."
"It’s good that you’re aware... about it..."
Cackling in joy, Calix swiftly brought Leslie out of the guest room. He inwardly sighed in relief to see her regaining a spark of joy.
Calix couldn’t imagine the extent of Leslie’s tumultuous heart right now. She had to hide the fact that Calliope was her daughter while not being aware he was the child’s father – the man who impregnated her years ago.
Tonight was the moment of truth. For the time being, Calix wished to enjoy the day with Leslie and Calliope as much as he could.
Once Calix and Leslie returned to the yard, Director Li approached them. The bodyguards and the staff of the orphanage entertained the energetic children.
"Mrs. Xu, are you feeling better now?" asked Director Li, concern brewing in her eyes, "Do you need something? Perhaps a drink?"
"I’m fine. Thank you for... asking, Director Li," Leslie smiled sheepishly, thinking of her uncanny behavior just now, "We should start the... party... Have the children eat?"
Leslie didn’t see Calliope anywhere. Her daughter might be enjoying the games with her friends.
"They’re waiting for Mr. Xu and you," Director Li chuckled, gesturing to the buffet table placed on the right side of the lawn, "The event planner and her staff did so well. The children are all excited."
Leslie swept her gaze over the front lawn. Because she was too preoccupied with Calliope, she had yet to take a proper look earlier.
The long buffet table served various kinds of mouthwatering dishes, from hamburgers, pasta, chicken popcorn, sandwiches, cupcakes and several types of drinks.
The birthday cake was placed in the middle of the table, waiting to be cut.
The giant inflatable castle sat at one end of the lawn, surrounded by happy children. Some of them raced through its maze of tunnels while the others simply played in its big chambers.
The children’s merry laughter harmonized with the music played for the party.
"Oh... we have several booths too?"
Leslie noticed three booths lined up near the bouncy castle, manned by adults. Some children headed there too.
"They’re face painting, temporary tattoo and cotton candy booths. We have several volunteers helping with today’s party," Director Li explained to the curious Leslie.
Director Li asked permission from Calix first regarding calling some volunteers. The man readily agreed, telling her to pick anyone she trusted. The children also were comfortable with the familiar faces.
Aside from helping with the party and the children, one of the volunteers signed up to be the photographer. He also recorded videos of the event.
"That’s nice... They’re doing good deeds," Leslie nodded twice, happy with the arrangement.
"Should we cut the cake first before playing?" Calix pulled Leslie’s attention back to him, pointing to the buffet table, "Some already drool ah."
Leslie and Director Li glanced at where Calix was pointing. They burst into laughter at the sight of several turnip heads eyeing the birthday cake with a deep longing. One of them gaped his mouth open.
"Hehe, we should..."
"I’ll call the children," said Director Li before stepping away from the spouses. She headed to the bouncy castle.
Feeling the passing breeze, Leslie felt slightly better. She wandered her gaze around, trying to spot Calliope among the children. Calix noticed her action.
"Aren’t the children adorable, Leslie?" said Calix, his voice echoing above Leslie’s head, "I think Calliope is the cutest."
The fondness in Calix’s voice tickled a part of Leslie’s heart. Tilting up her head, she locked her gaze onto his.
Calix’s eyes were always clear, not clouded by judgment or doubt. Time and again, he proved how reliable and trustworthy he was through his actions.
For some reason, Leslie had a hunch that no matter what kind of talk they had tonight, everything would turn out alright in the end.
She should stop letting her baseless fear overtake her heart.
Curling up her lips, Leslie nodded once, her eyes gleaming with joy, "...yes, she’s the most loveable..."
Her daughter would always be the most adorable to her.
"Let’s go now. I can’t wait to try the cake ah. I told the planner to get me a strawberry cake."
"Hehehe, you and your strawberry... cake won’t go anywhere..."
The spouses exchanged laughter before Calix pushed Leslie toward the buffet table. Director Li had started calling the children, assisted by the staff, volunteers and bodyguards.
Among them, Calliope came running toward them with something in her arms. She halted right in front of Leslie’s wheelchair.
"Aunty! Poppy forgot to show you this ah!"
Exclaiming cheerfully, Calliope lifted the red crochet fox toy in her hands. Her joyful eyes realized nothing when Leslie’s countenance suddenly changed.
What did she have just seen?
Stunned, Leslie’s gaze was fixated on the familiar crochet toy. Calliope happily moved the fox toy by its upper limb, as if wanted it to dance.
Wasn’t that Mimo?!
