Chapter 213: Her Daughter Was Always Loveable to Her

The colorful party setups and merry music greeted Leslie and Calix once they alighted the vehicle. He carefully put her on the wheelchair before pushing her forward, meeting the eyes of Director Li and everyone else.

"Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Xu," Director Li’s beaming smile expressed her joy for today’s celebration. Placing her eyes on Calix, she said, "And, happy birthday, Mr. Xu. May your life be blessed always."

While Director Li was welcoming Calix and Leslie, the children kept staring at the spouses. They clammed their lips shut, a few covered their mouths with both hands, holding back from talking.

"Thank you, Director Li. Let me introduce you to my wife. Oh!" Calix exclaimed, recalling something. Shifting his eyes from the middle-aged woman, he swept his gaze toward the children, "Hello, all. Wanna see my beautiful wife?"

Calix’s words stunned Leslie. Blinking, the warm blush crept in her cheeks before spreading down to her neck. She smiled sheepishly at Director Li and the children.

"Hello, Director Li, children... It’s a pleasure to see you..."

Leslie quietly greeted the older woman and the little turnip heads. She didn’t notice how mellow Calix’s gaze on her was.

"Oh~ Uncle’s wife is beautiful oh~"

"Granny, Uncle Calix’s wife looks like a fairy, right?"

"Pretty Aunty, what’s your name? My name is Ryan."

Before Director Li could reply to Leslie’s greeting, the children started talking nonstop. They moved forward, trying to get closer to Calix and Leslie. Their actions earned laughter from the spouses.

"Aiya, you guys can’t hold back anymore, en?" Director Li chuckled, shaking her head in helplessness, "Before that, did you forget something?"

The little turnip heads looked at each other. Question marks momentarily hung above their heads before their round eyes were directed to a smirking Calix.

"Uncle Calix, happy birthday to you."

"Uncle! The food looks so delicious! Thank you!"

"You’re one year older now, right? Uncle, Pretty Aunty is surely so much younger than you ah."

Calix was speechless. Widening his eyes, he pretended to tell the children off, "Hey! I’m still young, okay? I’m not that old ah. Little kid, don’t you dare think to steal my wife from me."

"Hahaha~"

Leslie quietly watched Calix interacting with the children. It seemed like he had built a good relationship with them during his previous visit. Well, his playful personality suited well with the little ones’.

While the children kept laughing, a little girl marched forward from behind. Her milky voice echoed in between the giggles.

"Poppy is back! Please let me through~"

Flinching, Leslie’s entire body froze. She stiffly moved her head to where the voice came, her heartbeat rapidly accelerating.

Despite sounding unfamiliar, the little girl’s voice resonated deeply to her heart.

Calliope! It was her Calliope!

’Leslie... stay calm. Stay calm!’

No one noticed the change in Leslie’s countenance. Several children looked back in the same direction she was looking at. They moved slightly, letting the girl walk to the front.

"Aiya! Poppy, you’re long in the toilet ah!"

"Poppy, hurry! Uncle Calix brought his pretty wife here!"

"Oh? Let me see!"

Calliope finally made her way to the front, materializing herself right opposite Leslie’s wheelchair. Their eyes locked onto one another, reflecting their images in their clear orbs.

Wonder glimmered in Calliope’s eyes while Leslie’s started to gloss. A myriad of emotions burst forth, unable to be held back by her timid heart.

The little one flashed her brightest smile to the lady in the wheelchair.

"Pretty Aunty, you’re Handsome Uncle’s wife? You’re like the prince and princess in the storybook ah. Hello~ My name is Calliope. You can call me Poppy."

Calliope cheerfully introduced herself to Leslie. She spun on her heels, twirling her skirt and curtsy like a princess.

Calliope didn’t realize the intensity of Leslie’s gaze on her. Nothing else existed in the former’s eyes right now. All of her attention was focused on the little one.

Calliope.

Her Calliope.

Her daughter appeared so much different from her past self in their previous world. But, there was no doubt that she was her—Leslie Song’s—daughter.

The one who was always loveable to her, the brightest light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Realizing that she hadn’t responded to Calliope’s greeting, Leslie hastily said, "Hello..."

Leslie paused once she noticed how hoarse her voice suddenly sounded. She also perceived how hot her eyes were. Blinking a few times, she held back from letting any tears drop from her eyes.

Her shoulders shaking, Leslie grasped both hands together, attempting not to reach out and hug Calliope.

’Don’t, Leslie. Not yet. Don’t scare her. You’re not anyone to her yet.’

Unaware by Leslie, Calix was still staring at her. Doing so allowed him to witness the change in her expression. He noticed the sunken of her cheerfulness once Calliope appeared in front of them.

Calix released both hands from the wheelchair handle, finding a place on Leslie’s shoulders. His action—his touch—pulled her back out of her trance.

Tilting her head up, Leslie looked at Calix who towered above her from behind. She was still startled by the sudden touch.

The backlighting of the sun cast a shadow on his face but, the mellowness of his smile was still reflected in her glistening eyes.

Calix nodded once at Leslie while squeezing her shoulders, hoping to channel some strength to her. Shifting his gaze from her, he looked at Calliope.

"Poppy, my wife is quite sick now. If it’s okay with you, can you give her a hug?" asked Calix softly, unwilling to demand Calliope to do his bidding.

Flustered, Leslie couldn’t move her eyes from Calix once she heard that. She stared blankly at him, still processing his words.

Once again he smiled at her, trying to reassure her that everything was fine.

Director Li said nothing while she continued looking at the spouses and Calliope. After knowing the truth behind the child’s identity, she eagerly waited for their meeting.

Calix had already provided more details about their situation to Director Li. Even though the middle-aged woman didn’t learn every single information, she was aware of its complexity.

"We have Calliope by accident. My wife and I were strangers at that time. I didn’t know she was pregnant nor how Calliope ended up here."

"One thing is for sure, my wife didn’t willingly give our daughter away. Her family situation is complicated."

"I wish to bring Calliope home to us. But, I know we need to prepare her for this transition first. I humbly ask for your assistance, Director Li."

As someone who had been taking care of Calliope from a little infant, Director Li simply wished the best for the family of three. She would extend her help whenever it was necessary.

Calix was a fine young gentleman. Despite possessing immense wealth, he treated the unfortunate orphans well. His heart was made of gold.

Director Li believed Calliope would thrive better under the spouses’ care.

Calliope blinked, not expecting to receive the request from Calix. Chuckling, she walked closer to Leslie. Her vibrant eyes expressed her glee.

"Pretty Aunty, do you want Poppy to hug you? I hope you will get better quickly."

Hearing the voice gently ask her made Leslie unable to hold herself back anymore. She had been waiting for this moment for so long.

Withdrawing her eyes from Calix, Leslie nodded at Calliope.

"Yes... Poppy’s hug will make Mo... Aunty feel better..."

Leslie quickly changed how she wished to address herself in front of Leslie. She didn’t want to stir any unnecessary scene during this crucial moment.

"Hehehe~ Come here, come here. Poppy will hug Aunty."

The sweetness of Calliope’s voice tickled Leslie’s heart. The little one extended her short limbs, trying to hug the latter. Leslie swiftly returned the gesture.

Her entire body shivering, Leslie reached out to embrace the child’s little body. As soon as she felt the warmth belonging to her daughter, her tears gushed out of her eyes despite her efforts.

Her daughter was alive! She was alive!

Her child... was no more the one... lying lifeless in her arms, bloodied after being impaled by the pillar[1].

A droplet of Leslie’s tears fell on one side of Calliope’s face, startling the little one.

"Ah, Aunty, don’t cry. Are you that sick? Here, here, Poppy will hug Aunty tighter."

Calliope gently patted Leslie with one of her little hands. Her worry sounded genuine, prompting the latter to cry more.

Leslie bit her lower lip, refraining from slipping any sobs out of her mouth. She unconsciously embraced Calliope tighter as the little one continually patting her back.

At that moment, Leslie cared nothing about the eyes watching her uncanny behavior. She only wished to savor more of her daughter’s warmth.

Still standing behind the wheelchair, Calix quietly watched Leslie and Calliope embracing each other. He grasped the sides of his long pants, stopping himself from enveloping them in a big hug.

Finally... she met their daughter.
