Chapter 215: He Looked More Excited Than the Children
Wasn’t that Mimo?!
How could this be?
In disbelief, Leslie kept staring at the red crochet fox toy held by the sunny Calliope. The little one merrily showed the toy, even asking if the former wanted to hug it.
"Aunty, my friend is so soft, so cuddly~ Oh! His name is Mimo! Isn’t he cute?"
What the... its name was also Mimo?
Unable to give any appropriate response, Leslie could only gape at the crochet toy with her mouth slightly opened. Incredulity glinted in her stunned gaze.
’En? Why did she look like that?’
Calix raised his brows, noticing how stiff Leslie suddenly appeared. She quietly examined the crochet toy as if she was shocked to see it.
’She didn’t mistake it with the one I made, right?’
Calix was not sure what was happening but, he could only assume that. Well, Calliope’s crochet toy looked similar to other fox toys he had seen before. The one he crocheted previously also bore resemblances.
"Leslie? Why do you look surprised ah?" Calix stepped forward before crouching in between the wheelchair and Calliope, glancing from his wife to his daughter, "Isn’t Poppy’s Mimo lovely?"
Calix’s voice pulled Leslie out of her stupor. Blinking, she absentmindedly nodded her head, "Yes... the toy is lovely... Ah, may I hold it, Poppy?"
"Sure!"
Flashing her brightest grin, Calliope handed the crochet fox toy to Leslie. The latter brought it to her lap, intently checking the toy.
’This can’t be...’
Perplexity overwhelmed Leslie. The closer she looked at the crochet fox toy, the more she believed this was Mimo’s physical body, unlike the soul one that had been accompanying her all this time.
The shades of yarn used, the way its right upper limb was a bit shorter than the left one and the stray strand of yarn at its tail.
This was really Mimo!
Did this mean Mimo’s entire body also transmigrated to this world? Not just its soul?
’Mimo! What happened? Why’s your body here?’
Leslie swiftly sent mind signals to Mimo back at Graceville Manor. The crochet fox toy didn’t follow Leslie to the orphanage to meet Calliope, choosing to stay at home as usual. But, it would appear if she wanted it to.
Mimo—poof!—materialized in front of Leslie instead of just answering her telepathically. The crochet fox toy—its soul—jumped on top of Calliope’s head before laying on its stomach.
|Hehehe~ Are you surprised, Leslie? I let my physical body accompany Poppy ah!|
"..."
Despite still having many questions, Leslie didn’t want to waste time by asking Mimo right now. That could wait until they returned home.
Shifting her eyes from the soul Mimo clinging to Calliope’s head to the physical Mimo in her hands, Leslie curled up a helpless smile. Perhaps this was the reason why the crochet fox toy knew her daughter was in a good environment.
’Mimo, just stay here ah. Aren’t you excited to meet Poppy? Let’s talk again later.’
|Okay~ I’ll stay until you return home.|
Leslie redirected her gaze to Calix and Calliope. Both of them were looking at her in wonder. The similarity in their actions earned another smile from her.
"Mimo is very cute... Poppy, seems like you really... cherish him..."
Leslie passed the toy Mimo back to Calliope. Her words garnered laughter from the little one.
"Poppy loves Mimo so much!" Calliope hugged the toy Mimo tightly, rubbing her right cheek on its head, "I sleep with Mimo every night. He can chase bad dreams away."
"Oh? That sounds nice..." chuckling, Leslie briefly looked at the soul Mimo before paying attention to Calliope again, "Then, you should show Mimo... when we cut the cake..."
"Okay!"
The children were all waiting for Calix to slice the cake. Director Li had everyone gathered around the table. The evident looks of anticipation on the little turnip heads’ faces tickled Leslie’s heart.
Calix pushed Leslie toward the table while Calliope walked ahead of them. None of them noticed that the photographer candidly captured a few of their pictures, unknowingly becoming their first family photo.
"Now! How should I cut the cake?"
Calix’s exclamation earned giggles from the children. Leslie smilingly watched him standing opposite the cake.
Hehe, why did he look more excited than the children?
Calliope was beside him, unable to withdraw her eyes away from the strawberry cake. Because she needed to hold a plate, she passed her Mimo toy to Leslie.
Oh!
A particular thought crossed Leslie’s mind, prompting her to verbalize it, "Shouldn’t we sing... birthday song first?"
"That’s a good idea!" Director Li clapped her hands once, quickly agreeing with Leslie, "Children! Let’s sing the Happy Birthday song to Mr. Xu!"
"Okay~"
"Let’s sing ah!"
"Uncle, our singing is good! Hear ah!"
Perplexed, Calix turned to look at Leslie, caught off guard by the sudden cheers from the children resulting from her sudden suggestion. His blank gaze was met with a smiley one from her.
In the end, CEO Xu stood surrounded by children—mostly barely reaching his thighs—singing a merry Happy Birthday song. His bodyguards followed along while the rest just watched in excitement.
"Happy birthday to Uncle Calix~"
"Uncle! You’re one year older now! Happy birthday!"
A round of applause echoed in the air once the children finished singing. Leslie chuckled, also clapping her hands. Her mind wandered from Calix to Calliope, sensing how fuller her heart was right now.
"Thank you! Thank you! Let’s cut the cake!"
Calix started slicing through the strawberry cake. His action earned a louder applause from the overjoyed little turnip heads.
"Everyone has your plate ready?" Calix swept his gaze across the children surrounding him, raising his eyebrows a few times.
"Here!"
"We got this!"
The little ones showed the paper plates given by the volunteers when they lined up earlier. Calix began distributing slices of cake to the children, telling them to be careful when carrying the plates.
Calliope was the first one who received her slice of cake. After thanking Calix, she walked away from him, heading to Leslie.
"Aunty~ Poppy got a cake."
Calliope’s glimmering eyes expressed her happiness, earning a genuine smile from Leslie.
"The cake looks cute... Poppy, sit down on the mat... Eat with your friends, en? Aunty will... take care of your Mimo... when you eat..."
Calliope blinked, shifting her eyes from Leslie’s face to the Mimo toy before they landed on the cake. Lifting her chin up, once again she looked at the lady in the wheelchair.
"Aunty, want Poppy to feed you cake?"
"...en?"
Her daughter wanted to feed her the cake?
