Chapter 203: Would the Story’s Control Weaken?

Finally, the long awaited day of the family meal—Friday—arrived.

Calix went to work as usual but, he informed Leslie that he would come home early. They planned to head to the Xu family’s ancestral home at six.

Neither too early nor too late.

"Don’t overwork yourself during the sessions. You should keep your energy for tonight’s dinner. Who knows, there might be some drama happening. Or we can hear gossip."

Calix’s reminder before he left for the company amused Leslie. She couldn’t help but feel doubtful over his words.

’Drama? What kind?’

Aside from Old Madam Xu, Vernon and his family would join tonight’s dinner. Evelyn couldn’t come. She was currently abroad, attending a launch party for a luxury jewelry brand as its global ambassador.

The Li family side was only made up of Rowan, Bianca and Irene. With no attendance of Old Madam Li, Geoffrey and his family, the likelihood of any drama happening was extremely low.

The Xu family was good people while Rowan and Bianca were mostly reserved.

Well, Leslie couldn’t deny that a tearful reunion might occur when Rowan and Bianca saw her. They wouldn’t ever know that her eldest daughter—Charlene—had long left for another world.

Following Calix’s advice, Leslie asked to do light training once Ms. Chen and Ms. Yao arrived. The two therapists agreed, saying she could take today easy.

"Thank you for today... Enjoy your weekend..."

Ms. Chen and Ms. Yao returned Leslie’s greeting at the end of their sessions that ended before noon. The two ladies came by carpooling today instead of separately as usual.

"Hope you have a good dinner with your family and in-laws, Mrs. Xu."

"We’ll get going then. Mrs. Xu, see you on Monday."

Leslie watched Ms. Chen and Ms. Yao heading toward the entryway. Aunt Wendy went to see them off. Mrs. Su stayed behind with the former.

"Do you want to go upstairs, Mrs. Xu?" asked Mrs. Su after the therapists and Aunt Wendy disappeared from their sight, "Do you want your massage now?"

"Hehe, that sounds good..." chuckling, Leslie happily accepted Mrs. Su’s offer, "I’ll take a nap... after the massage..."

Getting a massage from an experienced private nurse after a tiring rehab treatment was heavenly. Even though Leslie didn’t exert herself as much as usual, the session still exhausted her. She was glad to listen to Calix.

After Mrs. Su was done massaging Leslie, the latter was left alone in the bedroom. Despite feeling drowsy, her mind was wide awake.

Lying on her back, Leslie stared at the ceiling. So many things came to mind when she was alone – everything related to Calix and Calliope as well as Charlene.

The assumptions she formed after reading Charlene’s diaries, would they come out as the truth?

Leslie would be lying if she said no fear clawed into her heart. She tried to stay positive but, the negative feelings still came knocking unwelcomed. Her desire to learn more was hindered by her inability to do much for now.

’Isn’t it common for a storyline to be like that? But, how can I open up to him? It’ll surely be... heartbreaking.’

Leslie felt bad for still thinking this world was a fictional one. Even though the past actions were crafted by the author, she wanted to assume the future was not.

What happened next should be out of the consequences of her choices. From the moment she entered this world, her life was not something pre-planned by anyone.

Still, she couldn’t say the same about other people including Calix.

’Mimo, are you here? I have something to ask you.’

Leslie didn’t see Mimo anywhere from the moment she returned to this bedroom. The crochet fox toy might be wandering inside or inside the mansion.

Poof!

Leslie! You called?

Mimo materialized in the air right after Leslie contacted it telepathically. The crochet toy jumped to the bed before crawling to where she was lying.

Leslie, what do you wanna ask me? I’ll answer well!

Mimo’s childlike voice earned laughter from Leslie. Pushing herself to lie on one side, she extended one arm before caressing the crochet toy’s head.

"I haven’t really... asked you about this matter. My actions... are mine but, how about... Calix? Shouldn’t he be freed... from what’s supposed to happen... in the story now that... I’m here?"

Mimo stood on its lower paws, nestling itself in the crook of Leslie’s arm. Its action incited laughter from her as she thought about how adorable the crochet toy was.

You’re right, Leslie. CEO Xu won’t be bound to the storyline anymore. Or, shall I say some things are meant to happen no matter what, but he won’t be influenced by outside forces? Like you, he’ll make his choices based on his own intellect.

"That’s a relief..." Leslie exhaled a sigh. She felt better after getting the confirmation from Mimo instead of just guessing it, "Well, it’s kind of expected but... I wanna hear it from you..."

Leslie had learned that Mimo didn’t have every answer to her curiosity. The crochet fox toy also couldn’t share everything it knew. She was unsure of the reason but, perhaps it needed to follow some kind of rules.

The other characters will still follow some of the original settings but, you’ll have some sort of influence on them. The story’s control over them will eventually weaken.

Mimo rarely explained further about any subject to Leslie. She was surprised to learn more from the crochet fox toy. The revelation also delighted her.

"Is there any example? Oh... maybe I can smack some sense... into Xander... when he mistreats Violet... next time? How about I... conspire with Violet... to get back to Xander?"

Yes! You can do that!

Amused, Leslie held back from laughing out loud. Her drowsiness lessened.

Aside from seeing them when she was still a soul, Leslie hadn’t properly met Xander and Violet yet. She truly hoped that she could be friends with the female lead.

Violet was a nice young lady. But, Leslie hoped that she would defend herself more when Xander treated her poorly. She didn’t deserve that kind of treatment at all.

But, before that...

"First thing first... I need to clarify the truth... about Charlene’s child..."

Lightly shaking her head, Leslie redirected her focus to the family dinner tonight and her first meeting with Calliope tomorrow morning.

Perhaps, she would receive more clues or no longer suffer from headaches when she tried thinking deeper about it.
