Chapter 198: Someone Has Found a New Ally

The topic of the wedding was pushed aside when Butler Gu came to inform them about lunch. Calix carried Leslie to the wheelchair before heading to the dining room, followed by Old Madam Xu on one side.

’Well, well~ Look who’s so considerate and gentle here.’

Once again, Old Madam Xu witnessed something new. She was pleasantly surprised to see how well Calix did when feeding Leslie.

His actions showed no signs of awkwardness, depicting how casual these actions were to him.

"I’m sorry, Grandma... I can’t feed myself yet... I’ll make a mess..."

Leslie bashfully apologized as she noticed how intense Old Madam Xu’s gaze was on her and Calix. Despite not sensing any displeasure, she still felt embarrassed.

"Don’t apologize ah," Old Madam Xu waved one of her hands, trying to soothe Leslie’s concern, "I didn’t expect that Calix would feed you himself. Sure, a husband should do this ah. It’ll be a great way for you to bond."

Leslie blinked before she surreptitiously glanced at Calix. He was scooping another ladle of the fish soup served on the table, pouring the broth into a bowl. He barely touched his own food.

"How could I let another person feed my wife when I’m here, right, Grandma?"

Calix grinned, showing another one of his signature smirks. He put the bowl next to Leslie’s white rice porridge, stirring it with a spoon. The mouth-watering scent wafted in the air, tempting anyone to savor the dishes.

"I have no complaints," shrugging, Old Madam Xu chuckled. She was happy to see more of the spouses’ intimacy, "Leslie, eat more. If you feel drowsy after lunch, feel free to take a nap. Your body needs adequate rest, isn’t it?"

Old Madam Xu still remembered how Calix was after emerging from the coma almost six years ago. Her heart was torn seeing how weak he was, a stark contrast to his usual lively and active self.

This was not her second grandson whom she had ever known. Her son’s secondborn was an energetic and impulsive young man, always being the life of the party.

Calix slept more than staying awake. His doctor mentioned it was not something to be worried about. His body just gave signals for him to replenish his energy while healing from the inside.

Fortunately, Calix didn’t let himself be depressed over the lack of his mobility and coordination. His denial phase didn’t last long as he diligently followed every advice and training the therapists came up with.

Leslie’s cheeks pinkened, feeling good to receive genuine care and attention from the kindhearted old lady.

"I will, Grandma... Thank you..."

Old Madam Xu drew another smile on her lips, trying to reassure Leslie. Then, she shifted her gaze from her new granddaughter-in-law to her grandson. She threw several questions to Calix.

"When will you tell your parents and Leslie’s? Or, will you just surprise them on that day?"

Old Madam Xu was intrigued by Calix’s plan. She was aware of Leslie and her parents’ distant relationship. But, she believed it was better if the spouses let both sides of the parents know.

"Sometime within this week," answered Calix after taking a bite of rice. Glancing at Leslie, he resumed, "I’ll tell Mom and Dad soon but, my parents-in-law have to wait. They might ask to meet Leslie before the planned dinner."

Leslie slowly nodded, showing Old Madam Xu that she shared the same view as Calix.

Old Madam Xu didn’t have any problem with the spouses’ plan. She continued saying, "Your parents are in Thailand now. I think they’ll head to Malaysia this Monday. Since we’re in the same time zones, it’s better to call them soon."

If Calix forgot about the matter because of his busy schedule, Old Madam Xu wouldn’t let it go easily. This upcoming dinner was an important event for both families – revealing Leslie’s current health to everyone.

"Empress Dowager Xu, this humble servant will surely carry out your order."

Old Madam Xu glared when Calix started replying in a sing-song voice. Leslie quietly watched their interaction, holding back her laughter.

After lunch, Calix brought Leslie to his bedroom. Old Madam Xu returned to hers.

The two ladies wished to get some rest before resuming talking. There were still lots of things the Xu family’s matriarch wanted to chat about with Leslie.

"Sorry... you need to carry me all the way... upstairs..."

In her drowsiness, Leslie droopily stared at Calix. He had just laid her on the bed, now pulling the blanket to cover her body.

"We don’t have an elevator here. Don’t think too much ah," snickering, Calix flexed his muscular right arm, "Don’t you see this? I can carry you all the time without a problem. I’m trained for this."

Chuckling, Leslie blinked her eyes a few times, trying to resist her sleepiness, "Mr. Xu, I’m just thankful you didn’t... carry me like a sack... over your shoulder..."

Calix scoffed, amused by Leslie’s choice of words. Raising one brow, he jokingly said, "Maybe I should do that next time. What do you think?"

"Hehe... I’ll tattle to your grandmother if... you do that..."

Leslie’s response prompted laughter out of Calix. Throwing his head back, he guffawed. His merry laughter bounced off the walls, resonating in the bedroom.

"Wow~ Someone has found a new ally. I’m scared~"

Lightly shaking her head, Leslie closed her eyes properly. Her whisper drifted in the air, reaching Calix whose smile softening.

"Wake me up... soon..."

"Just sleep, Mrs. Xu. Grandma might nap for an hour or two."

Reaching out a hand, Calix gently brushed one palm across Leslie’s head. He had taken off her hairband and loosened her hair bun. She would sleep better that way.

Calix sat on the edge of the bed, watching the sleeping Leslie. His gaze traced the slightly flickering of her eyelashes. Smiling, he twirled one lock of her hair.

’Will we be as harmonious as right now when you finally learn of what I’m hiding?’

Calix dreaded the day he revealed everything to Leslie. The time limit was the next weekend. just after they visited the orphanage. He couldn’t afford to delay it any longer.

Seeing that Leslie was deep in her sleep, Calix rose to his feet. Instead of leaving the bedroom, he walked out to the balcony. His eyes fell on the swing chair he used to share with her before.

Calix threw himself on the chair, his movement rocking it. Putting both hands deep into the pockets of his cargo pants, his mind wandered far to Frostwich Town.

"I haven’t called Director Li."

Calix initially planned to contact the orphanage director this morning but, he was preoccupied with other things. He should do it once they return home later.

Aside from informing Director Li about Calliope, Calix also wanted to bring up the topic of throwing a party there. He had started listing down what should he prepare.

"I want the kids to have fun."

Smiling to himself, Calix recalled the time he played with the children the last few weeks. All of them were very well-behaved while possessing their own unique personalities.

Among them, Calliope was the most adorable one in Calix’s eyes.

Hehe, surely ah.

His and Leslie’s daughter was the most lovable one.
