Chapter 199: Acting Annoyingly Smug About Having a Wife
Calix and Leslie ended up changing their plan. Instead of returning in the late afternoon, they had dinner together with Old Madam Xu.
The spouses unisonly acknowledged the old lady’s desire to spend more time with them, leading to them extending their visit. Yet, they had to decline the offer of staying the night.
Old Madam Xu, Butler Gu and two maids sent Calix and Leslie off to the front door. Mrs. An and Logan were also there with them.
The moon was already high up in the sky. The clock pointed to a little after eight. They had an early dinner tonight.
"We’ll come and spend time... with you again, Grandma..." said Leslie while holding Old Madam Xu’s wrinkly hands, "Thank you for your... hospitality today... I enjoyed talking to you..."
After waking up from their nap, Old Madam Xu told Calix and Leslie to gather back in the lounge. She took the chance to show her new granddaughter-in-law a few of the family photo albums.
The old lady narrated the stories behind certain photos, like the ones portraying the much younger Calix and Evelyn fighting.
Smiling, Old Madam Xu took her hands out of Leslie’s grasp. She stepped forward before hugging the young lady in the wheelchair. Her action stunned Leslie.
"You can come here whenever you want, either with Calix or alone," Old Madam Xu softened her voice. She ran one palm across the back of Leslie’s head, "This is your family’s home. Don’t hesitate to see me."
Old Madam Xu had taken a liking to the lady her grandson chose as his bride. She sensed how well their relationship was, prompting her to daydream about getting a great-grandchild from the spouses in the future.
Aiya, an old woman like her wished to see her grandson’s child before she closed her eyes forever.
Unaware of Old Madam Xu’s inner thoughts, Leslie returned the old lady’s hug. She slowly ran her palm on the former’s back, taking in the warmth offered by the frail and petite grandmother.
"I will do that, Grandma... thank you again..."
Leslie’s whisper was met with a smile from Old Madam Xu.
Tilting his head, Calix openly stared at Old Madam Xu as he stood behind Leslie’s wheelchair. His smile had a hint of a smirk.
"Grandma, don’t just keep hugging my wife. We need to go back to our home now."
Calix’s remarks earned a glare from Old Madam Xu while Leslie’s momentarily froze. His choice of words stemmed heat at the tips of her ears, worming its way to her cheeks.
Really, how many times this man had made her blush today?
Pursing her lips, Leslie didn’t focus on Calix and Old Madam Xu’s exchange of banter. She inwardly told herself not to be easily affected when he talked like that.
Even when... she noticed how genuinely yet subtly affectionate he could be.
"Leslie, tell Grandma if this brat mistreats you, en?"
Old Madam Xu’s voice pulled Leslie out of her stupor, startling her.
"...huh? Ah... what did you say, Grandma? I’m sorry... I didn’t catch that..."
"Hahaha! Nothing, Grandma said nothing," Calix burst into laughter, eyeing Old Madam Xu mischievously, "Say good night to Grandma, wifey~ We’re going home now."
Perplexed, Leslie waved one of her hands, bidding Old Madam Xu farewell, "See you again soon, Grandma... Thank you for having... me today..."
Old Madam Xu held back from pinching Calix’s arm. Her grandson’s smile was annoyingly smug as if he was the only man in the entire universe who had a wife.
Taking in a deep breath, Old Madam Xu ignored Calix. Her expression morphed from peeved to all soft when her attention returned to Leslie.
"If you need anything, just call Grandma, en? Be careful during your rehab sessions. Don’t push yourself too much. You’re doing better now."
Old Madam Xu had a small talk with Mrs. An. She wanted to hear about Leslie’s daily routine and her therapy sessions.
From the private nurse, Old Madam Xu learned how much effort Leslie put into improving her weakened state. The old lady also was glad to hear about the good relationship between her grandson and his wife.
"I will, Grandma..." nodding, Leslie smiled shyly, "I’ll do that... I have excellent private nurses and therapists... helping me to recover... Calix, Aunt Wendy and... Uncle Raymond care for me too..."
Calix put the back of his hand over his mouth, masking his laughter by pretending to cough. Old Madam Xu rolled her eyes, knowing full well that her grandson was acting arrogant for the nth time today.
"It’s getting late. Go home now," Old Madam Xu reluctantly said goodbye to the spouses, "Remember what I’ve told you."
"Okay... Bye, Grandma... Good night..."
"Bye-bye~"
Calix carried Leslie into the car as usual before finding his seat next to her. Waving at Old Madam Xu, Butler Gu and the rest, they wished the older people farewell.
Soon, Logan started driving the car out of the Xu family’s ancestral home’s compound, heading to the main gate of Phoenix Heights. The passing lampposts left flickering orange lights against the sleek body of the car.
Leslie couldn’t put her smile away even if she wanted to. Recalling the hours she spent with Old Madam Xu flooded warmth and joy in her heart.
She earnestly had fun today. The uneasiness that plagued her heart in the morning had entirely vanished.
Shifting her eyes from the outside to the man beside her, Leslie called his name.
"Calix..."
Listening to his name being called softly, Calix turned to look at Leslie. Her face was faintly illuminated by the lights filtering through the car window. He could make out the genuine smile hanging on her lips.
"Why? Are you sleepy? Sleep ah. I’ll wake you up once we arrive home."
Calix silently applauded Leslie for making his grandmother fond of her. He also acknowledged that today might be more exhausting to her compared to the usual days.
"Thank you for bringing... me to meet your... grandmother..." Leslie wished her sincerity was conveyed through her words, her lips melted into a smile, "I appreciate that..."
Leslie hoped to interact with Old Madam Xu more in the future. She enjoyed being showered by the kindhearted grandmother’s warmth when she lacked it in her previous life.
"Seems like Grandma likes you more than me ah. I can feel it. Does my position in the family jump to the lowest hierarchy?"
Calix pretended to be sad, earning laughter from Leslie. Her chuckles resonated in the car, unknowingly making its way into the former’s heart.
