Chapter 163: Like a Speck of Dust In the Vast Universe of His Heart
Much to Calix’s delight, Leslie had yet to go to bed. Because he didn’t spend even an hour in Viluxs, the night was still early by the time he reached Graceville Manor.
Leslie gathered in the lounge with Aunt Wendy, Uncle Raymond and Mrs. An. They shared some snacks and tea while sharing stories. The former mostly listened to the older folks speak while having soft yogurt.
"Oh? Why did you return early, Mr. Calix?"
Uncle Raymond paused from talking once he saw Calix appearing at the entrance of the lounge. His remark brought everyone’s attention to the young man.
"Going out tonight sucks," Calix laughed while taking off his jacket. His gaze briefly landed on Leslie before moving to everyone, "Is it storytime? Can I join?"
"Sure! Sure! We still have lots of snacks and tea left."
Uncle Raymond gestured at the vacant seat next to Leslie. Mrs. An moved her from the wheelchair to the couch before they started talking over the snacks and tea.
Plopping down on the couch, Calix smiled at Leslie, "Seems like you’re not bored tonight."
Leslie returned the smile, "Everyone’s sharing... good and funny... stories with me..."
Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond happily watched the short interaction between the husband and wife.
Even though the lady of the house was unable to speak much and coherently, they were delighted to see how patient their master was with his wife.
Calix and Leslie stayed in the lounge with the rest. Aunt Wendy, Uncle Raymond and Mrs. An did most of the talking, especially the middle-aged man. Laughter echoed in between their chattering.
"En? Are you sleepy already?"
Calix noticed Leslie’s droopy eyes. She also seemed to refrain from yawning too much.
"...quite," replied Leslie quietly. She could barely keep her eyes open.
"Mrs. Charlene, you should head to bed now," Uncle Raymond chimed in, expressing his concern, "Getting plenty of rest is good for your body."
Aunt Wendy and Mrs. An sang to the same tune as Uncle Raymond.
Calix chuckled, thinking how he enjoyed this small gathering with Leslie and the staff. The remaining vexation toward Xander gradually faded.
"I’ll bring her upstairs," Calix glanced at the spouses before his eyes rested on Mrs. An, "You may come up later, Mrs. An. It’s the weekend but, you’re still busy working."
"Thank you, Mr. Xu."
Calix carried Leslie to the wheelchair before leaving the lounge. Pushing the wheelchair from behind, a smirk hung on his lips as he watched her head nodding off.
"Did you have fun listening to them?" asked Calix quietly once they got inside the elevator, "Uncle Raymond has lots of stories. You won’t get bored if he’s the main storyteller."
Calix’s remarks prompted Leslie to chuckle. Slightly tilting her head, she returned his gaze to her.
"It’s fun... a different kind... from listening to... the audiobooks..."
Leslie had just finished with light dinner when Uncle Raymond appeared, asking if she would like to join them in talking. Aunt Wendy also brought up the same thing.
The spouses seemed to want to accompany Leslie when Calix was away for the night. She immediately agreed, thinking that it was a good time to bond with Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond. Mrs. An also joined them.
Even though Leslie couldn’t join their conversation much, she was still having fun. Uncle Raymond, Aunt Wendy and Mrs. An made her feel included.
Soon, Calix and Leslie reached the latter’s bedroom. Instead of carrying her directly to the bed, he helped her to the washroom.
Leslie wanted to brush her teeth and wash her face before sleeping. As usual, Calix was right next to her, assisting her with both tasks.
After Leslie was done, Calix brought her out of the washroom.
"Why did you... return early?" Leslie voiced her confusion while Calix lay her on the mattress, "I thought that you... would return later..."
How could Leslie not be surprised?
Xander made a fuss as if he wanted Calix to stay longer with him and Davin. Yet, Calix returned home less than one hour and a half later.
"Xander wanted to leave early. I think he went chasing after his girlfriend ah. She’s on an outstation. He can’t function without her."
Calix lied without batting an eyelid. He couldn’t possibly say a fight erupted because of her to Leslie. He also didn’t feel bad selling Xander’s name. After all, his friend was the one who started the quarrel first.
"Oh..."
Leslie didn’t ask much. Knowing how possessive the male lead could be, Calix’s story sounded so plausible. She wouldn’t ever imagine that something serious happened between Calix and Xander.
"Want me to play some music?"
Calix pulled the blanket, covering Leslie from her neck to her legs. Then, he sat on the chair facing the bed.
"It’s fine... so sleepy..." Leslie let out another yawn, her eyes kept drooping, "Good night... Calix.."
"Have sweet dreams, Leslie."
Leslie fell asleep as soon as she closed her eyes. Calix continued sitting on the chair. He didn’t feel like returning to his bedroom yet. He planned to stay until Mrs. An came upstairs.
The comforting silence around him made Calix recall the chaos that happened back in Viluxs a few hours ago. He really didn’t expect to leave the clubhouse feeling angry toward Xander.
Keeping his eyes on the sleeping Leslie, a thought crossed Calix’s mind, stemming from Xander’s previous remark.
’Should I... tell her about Aria? Or, is it better if I don’t say anything?’
Reaching out one hand, Calix gently brushed his knuckle with Leslie’s cheek. Her eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings. He couldn’t help but briefly wonder if she was dreaming of something already.
If Xander didn’t mention Aria at all, Calix would have forgotten her existence. Her presence was like a speck of dust in the vast universe of his heart and mind.
’No. Let’s not think about that yet. There’s something more important now.’
Calix didn’t want to be distracted from his newly established goal. He needed to get the answer before all those questions tangling more within him.
