Chapter 162: His Wife Was a Different Individual Altogether
Driven by frustration, Calix raised his voice. His chest heaved up and down at an alarming rate, expressing how enraged he was with Xander now.
"Guys... keep it civil, okay?" Davin worriedly looked at his friends, sensing how quickly the temperature dropped in the room, "Xander, you shouldn’t ask Calix something like that ah. And Calix, you know how Xander is, right?"
Davin didn’t know why Calix suddenly erupted due to Xander’s offensive question tonight. He usually bore it while throwing joking replies to ease the tension.
Shaking his head, Calix grabbed a bottle of mineral water. He downed half of it before slamming it back to the coffee table.
"So, who do you think will suit me, oh the great CEO Qin?" asked Calix sarcastically, "Just because I don’t love my wife yet, you’re so eager to get me divorced her. Why?"
"I stand by my words," replied Xander stubbornly, unwilling to admit fault, "Have you forgotten, Calix? Even though it ended terribly, you shone the most when you’re with Aria."
Calix froze. He unconsciously clenched his right hand hard, his nails dug deeper into his palm.
Despite sounding foreign to her, the particular name pricked his heart before blood gushing out through the hollows.
Davin flinched. He didn’t expect that Xander would utter that name just to make his point. He was afraid to see how Calix’s expression changed.
"Hey... this has gone too far," Davin sighed out of frustration. Glaring at the brooding Xander, he spoke up, "Xander, why did you drag Aria into this? Calix’s right. Why can’t you just wish him for the best? You also know how rumors work."
Davin wanted to play neutral but, he didn’t have the heart to do so.
Xander was at fault here. He began bringing up offensive questions when Calix was sharing happy news with them.
No matter how Calix and his wife’s marriage started, it was enough once he claimed he wanted to make his marriage work.
Yet, Xander kept insisting on his view.
"What do you mean someone like her, Xander?" Calix’s eerily calm voice resonated through the suffocating air, "Aria is Aria. Leslie, my wife, is another person altogether."
Xander’s sharp gaze fell on Calix’s somber countenance. More words flowed out of his mouth.
"I don’t condone what she did to you years ago. But, you can’t deny she has a good head over her shoulders and a good background, someone who befits your status as the Xu family’s heir. You still have many women like her around you."
Calix was exasperated. He didn’t expect to hear such lame reasons from Xander.
Despite not wanting to drag an innocent person into this, Calix needed to make his point.
"Then, do you think Violet fits your status?"
Xander flinched. Growling, he spat, "Violet and I are different. We’re in love, unlike you and that woman."
"That woman is my wife, Xander!" Calix snapped, shouting the fact to his friend’s face, "Instead of bothering yourself with our marriage, you better think of how not to upset Violet with your jealousy."
Xander clenched his jaw. He wanted to refute but, Calix’s fiery gaze held him back. It was rare to see his friend showing such a rageful persona.
"I don’t want to fight further. I’ll head back home."
Without waiting, Calix immediately stood up and rushed to the door. He didn’t forget to grab his coat from its rack.
"C-Calix!" stunned, Davin quickly jumped to his feet to chase after his friend, "You’ve just got here ah! Where are you going?"
Davin’s words fell on deaf ears as Calix hurriedly stepped out of the room, slamming the door shut. His footsteps echoed heavily in the empty corridor.
’Shit!’
Calix refrained from cursing out loud. He abruptly stopped on his track, trying to gather himself better. The raging waves inside him crashed violently onto his heart’s shoreline, causing him unable to think clearly.
Shaking his head, Calix ran his fingers through his hair. He dragged himself to the nearby balcony, eager to breathe in the fresh night air.
"Haa..."
Calix grabbed the handrail, throwing his gaze to the vast expanse of the clubhouse’s yard. Blinking neon lights from the city’s skyscrapers added colors to the nightscape. The breeze howled gently by his ears.
Calix disliked how Xander suddenly brought Aria’s name into their conversation. Yet, he despised how lowly his friend viewed Leslie more.
Even without Calix asking further, he knew Xander’s worse impression of Leslie was influenced by the rumors.
Yet...
"He should know better how rumors work..."
Calix was frustrated and disappointed by how Xander acted. The latter used to say how rumors shouldn’t be taken seriously because no one really knew what happened behind the curtains.
If not because of how complicated the situation was, Calix was so tempted to tell Xander the truth behind Violet’s incident last month.
The one who discovered the sinister plan was Leslie, the woman Xander deemed not suitable to be Calix Xu’s wife.
Without Leslie’s warning, perhaps Violet’s fate when morning came would be worse.
Unfortunately, Calix could say nothing about it. No one would believe him anyway.
"...I better go back."
Exhaling a sigh, Calix took his phone out of the jacket. He sent messages to Davin.
[Calix: Please keep about Leslie’s recovery secret. Only the doctor and therapists know so far. I haven’t told our families yet]
[Calix: I’m on my way home. Sorry that I can’t stay longer]
Slipping the phone back into the pocket, Calix made his way out of the balcony. He didn’t drink much but, he would still use the chauffeur service offered by the clubhouse.
Ding!
While Calix walked down the hallway, he faintly heard the incoming message notifications. He didn’t read Davin’s response until he got inside the car with the chauffeur sitting behind the wheels.
[Davin: I know. I’ll tell Xander too. Sorry, I don’t know what got into this mad lad]
[Davin: Get home safely. Let’s talk again later if you want]
Calix simply responded with a simple ’OK’. He understood that Davin was just caught in the crossfire between him and Xander.
Sitting in the backseat, Calix silently looked at the passing scenery outside the windows. The lights from the streetlamps bounced into the car, illuminating his sullen countenance.
Aria.
Aria Jiang.
Calix closed his eyes as the memories of the past slowly resurfaced in his mind, revealing an image of a glamorously beautiful woman smiling and laughing at him.
Without a doubt, the image was alluring but...
’Once again... I feel as if they are not my memories.’
The enchanting woman had shredded his heart into pieces before throwing him into the abyss, leaving lingering pain.
Yet...
Calix didn’t know why he felt how foreign those memories and heartache were to him. Despite that, he was still reluctant to hear about her anymore.
’Let’s not think about it.’
Exhaling a soft sigh, Calix pushed the thoughts about the woman to the back of his mind. Another face was conjured, unknowingly helping to soothe his troubled feelings.
’Has she gone to sleep now?’
With a gentle smile curling up on his lips, Calix anticipated the time he would reach their home soon.
