Chapter 164: Boss Xu, You Don’t Owe Me Any Answers

On the next day, Calix finished the rest of his impending job. He hadn’t forgotten his promise to bring Leslie out for a drive tonight.

When Calix brought up the matter during breakfast, Leslie’s eyes shone brightly like two stars, prompting him to laugh. Her excitement was plainly obvious.

After having dinner together, Calix and Leslie headed out as planned. He didn’t go too far from Mapleview Hills just in case she wanted or had to go back earlier than expected.

But, the short time they spent together while on the drive made both of them happy and satisfied.

Calix was glad to see Leslie’s expression more vibrant than usual. Her eyes lit up in joy as she enjoyed watching the cityscape at nighttime. The glimmering moonlight gently cast a gleam on her smiling countenance.

Seeing her glowing with happiness reminded him of the times they spent exploring Rome together, including during their dance under the moonlight.

"Let’s do this more often. We can go to other places if you want. How about we go boating again later?"

Calix promised Leslie that on their way home. He simply opened the opportunity to her. Whether she took it or not, he didn’t intend to pressure her about it.

If they went boating like before for example, Leslie had to show her face to the public.

This city was huge. The probability of them bumping into the people who knew them was low but, Leslie might want to be cautious with her movement.

But, Leslie’s instant reply made Calix happy.

"If you don’t mind... I want to go... boating again..."

A chirpy Calix quickly nodded, vowing to bring Leslie boating as soon as he could. His response led her to chuckle.

The weekend ended with Leslie and Calix having fun together. The latter paid no attention when Xander texted him. He didn’t want to bother himself with his friend yet.

Once the brand new week started, the husband and wife were caught up in their respective busy schedules.

Leslie was preoccupied with her next rehab sessions. She learned nothing about the new plan cooked up in Calix’s mind regarding Calliope. She only knew what he had told her before.

After the meeting on Monday morning, Calix summoned Edward to his office.

The unassuming chief assistant simply guessed that his boss wanted to rant about the unsatisfactory outcome of the meeting. Never did he suspect the latter had something else in mind.

"I need you to do something about this child," Calix placed the copy of Calliope’s information on the desk. The photo was missing as it was given to Leslie.

Edward quickly caught the meaning behind his boss’ words, "Is it this girl, Boss Xu? Will I get the promised bonus and vacation time soon?"

His hard work was paid off!

More money flowed into his bank account! Beautiful beaches waited for his arrival!

"...you’ll get the bonus this month but save the vacation for this summer," Calix made a face. He didn’t expect that was Edward’s first reaction, "Understand?"

"Yes, yes, I’ve already foreseen this."

Edward nodded a few times. His eyes were still sparkling with joy despite having to delay the most awaited vacation time. As the chief assistant, he couldn’t easily leave his post without any preparations unless it was an emergency.

Reaching out for the paper, Edward briefly read the words printed on it, "Calliope Li from Harmony Haven Orphanage. What do you want me to do, Boss Xu?"

Until now, Edward hadn’t inquired much about the reason why his boss was busy looking for this little girl in secret. Several guesses naturally formed in his mind the longer he searched yet, he kept his thoughts to himself.

"Clear my schedule for one day within these two weeks. The sooner, the better. Contact the orphanage director too. I’ll visit the place myself."

Calix shot those barrage of instructions without stopping, catching Edward off guard.

"...come again? Do you want to go there yourself, Boss Xu? Don’t you want to send people there?"

Who was this Calliope?

What was so important about her that required his boss to head to the orphanage himself?

Did one of his guesses was true?

"Ask the director which supplies they need including what kind of help they require," said Calix further without answering Edward’s curiosity, "Contact her by today. Tell her to keep our future visit a secret."

The firmness of Calix’s tone stopped Edward from continuing to ask. He knew where to draw the line. It was obvious that his boss wouldn’t disclose anything yet.

"Understand. I’ll immediately contact the director and see which day I can clear for you."

Calix exhaled a sigh. Twirling one ballpen between two fingers, he exclaimed, "I know you’ve started guessing the reasons behind my actions. I’ll answer you when the right time comes."

Edward straightened his posture, his expression became more serious, "Boss, you don’t owe me any answers. If you ever decide to share them with me, I’ll listen while keeping my mouth shut."

Calix’s lips curled into a faint smile. He knew where Edward’s loyalty lay. Throughout the years, his trust in the younger man had only grown before it fully solidified.

Once Edward left, Calix buried himself in his work. He only paused when necessary including the time he contacted the manor to ask about Leslie.

Aunt Wendy reported that Leslie was busy with her rehab sessions. Calix was glad to hear that she was eating properly.

Unfortunately, Calix couldn’t talk to Leslie herself. More important work was waiting for him.

Before the end of the day, Edward reported about his first contact with the orphanage director, Director Margaret Li. She was happy to receive future donations from a massive conglomerate like Xu International.

Director Li promised to contact Edward through e-mail soon. The latter directly asked what kind of assistance and supplies the orphanage needed.

"Boss, you can head there next Tuesday. I’ve rescheduled some of your arrangements while for the others, I have to cram them together."

Calix listened to the new arrangements organized by Edward in detail. He couldn’t go home early on some days, something he had already expected.

"That’s sufficed. I’ll pick a few bodyguards to follow me. Arrange my transportation as well. Get the supplies ready before I arrive there."

"Understand, Boss Xu."

Edward quickly crafted the plan for that day in his mind. A team should head to Frostwich Town in Bridgeland City on Monday, one day before their boss went there.

To shorten the time, Calix and the bodyguards would ride a helicopter. The three hours and a half by car ride could be cut to around one hour.

Everything needed to be perfect.

After reporting other matters, Edward hurriedly left the CEO’s office, leaving Calix drowning in his own thoughts.

The sun was hanging just above the skyline, dyeing the city’s sky amber and gold. The vibrant colors were perfectly visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Turning the office chair around, Calix watched the cityscape. Without thinking much, he reached out for the phone before taking a few photos of the spectacular scenery.

"If she’s here, she’d definitely love this."

Smiling to himself, Calix rose to his feet. His heart was calling him to head home now.
