Chapter 161: Will You End Your Marriage With Her Soon?
The bombshell stunned Xander and Davin while Calix wore the brightest smile on his face. The warm light from the chandelier above cast a glow on his merry countenance.
"Your wife... she did what? Y-you... did you say she..."
Davin stuttered, unable to believe Calix’s statement. In the end, he trailed off. No other words left his mouth.
Pulling himself out of the stupor, Xander sharpened his gaze. His questions imbued with suspicions were directed to his friend, "Calix, has your wife really regained consciousness? You’re not trying to pull our legs, huh?"
Both Xander and Davin couldn’t help but doubt Calix’s claim despite knowing their prankster of a friend would never joke about such an important matter like this.
Wasn’t the eldest miss of the Li family in a coma?
Why did she suddenly wake up?
Xander and Davin understood that she was bound to regain consciousness in the future. But... they didn’t expect this soon!
Calix’s grin deepened, thoroughly amused by the reactions he got from his friends. Even the usually unfazed Xander was affected by the news.
Reaching out for a bottle of whiskey, Calix helped himself to a glass. The amber liquid flowed into the crystal glass, glimmering under the lights.
"You two should congratulate me ah. One month into our marriage, my wife’s no longer a coma patient."
Xander and Davin glanced at each other, incredulity still swirling in their eyes. Seemed like Calix was really telling the truth – his wife of one month emerged from her coma.
Exhaling a long sigh, Xander grabbed his glass of whiskey. Davin randomly flailed his hands before smiling in helplessness.
"When did our new sister-in-law wake up?" asked Davin while grabbing a handful of mixed nuts into a small bowl, curious about Calix’s wife, "Was it last week?"
"Almost. When I was on my way back from Rome," Calix nodded. Without finishing the whiskey, he put down the glass, "She woke up a few hours before I landed. I received news about it on the flight. Man... I was shocked like hell."
"Wow... I didn’t expect that ah. You picked her because she couldn’t pester you like other ladies, right? Now that she woke up, what will you do next?"
Davin was still in disbelief. He kept holding a macadamia nut between his index finger and thumb without popping it into his mouth. His eyes were focused on Calix.
Xander was the same. But, his expression was sullen compared to Davin’s.
"Will you end your marriage after she gets better? You benefit nothing from the marriage. You also loath the Li family’s sons."
Xander and Davin knew how Rowan and Geoffrey were. One was a pushover while the other was arrogant despite not having abilities.
Calix silently shifted his eyes between Xander and Davin. Shaking his head, he firmly answered his friends’ curiosity, "I won’t end our marriage just because she has woken up. Why don’t I try making this marriage work?"
Xander and Davin blinked, unable to follow what Calix had in mind despite the simple words used by the former.
"...making your marriage work?" Davin blinked slowly, mistrust lacing his voice. Taking one of the nut shells, he threw it to Calix, "Hey, who are you? Return our friend to us. Get out."
Rolling his eyes, Calix grabbed the shell and threw it back to Davin, "I’m still sane ah. Why? Shouldn’t you be happy for me?"
"If that’s what you want, we’re good ah," Davin chuckled, his expression eased a lot, "Well, I haven’t seen your wife properly. But, it’s great if you two can be a good couple. When can we meet her?"
Davin didn’t mind much about how Calix and the Li family’s eldest miss got married. Even though the start was bizarre, perhaps their marital union would envelop them with bliss.
"Haha, thanks," Calix chirped happily, pleased by Davin’s words, "Leslie has just started her rehab. I’ll introduce you guys to her when she’s better."
"Leslie..." Davin blinked, thinking that he heard an unknown name from Calix, "Didn’t her name... Charlotte? Caroline... or something?"
Hey! Did his friend get mistakenly married to someone else?
Calix’s lips carried a smirk. He deliberately used Leslie instead of Charlene.
"Her legal name is Charlene. You can say Leslie is like her nickname," wiggling his brows, Calix purposely trying to sound pretentious, "You know? Just between me and her?"
"..."
Davin grimaced, shuddering out of cringe. Rubbing both of his arms, he said to Xander, "Hey... don’t you think Calix is being too mushy suddenly? I can’t stand it ah."
Calix scoffed, rolling his eyes openly. Glancing at Xander, he realized the latter hadn’t spoken much after questioning his marriage to Leslie earlier.
The heir of the Qin family didn’t have a good expression on his face, unlike Davin who looked happy now.
"What?" Calix leaned lazily against the backrest, crossing both arms over his chest, "Don’t look too stuck-up ah. What else are you thinking?"
Calix was actually displeased about Xander asking when he would end his marriage with Leslie. But, he simply paid no attention to it.
"Are you certain about continuing this marriage?"
Xander’s question stunned Davin while freezing Calix.
"H-hey, Xander..." Davin glared at the man in the dark suit, "What kind of question is that ah? Didn’t you hear what Calix said just now?"
Xander frowned deeply, expressing his take on the situation. Davin swallowed, sensing the atmosphere might go bad from this moment on.
"Why?" Calix raised his brows, throwing a question to Xander, "Do you want me to divorce her as soon as she gets better?"
Calix was smiling on the outside but, frost slowly emerged through his eyes. Xander’s continuous questions about ending his marriage with Leslie irked him.
How could his friend ask such a thing right from the start? He also didn’t know when to stop.
Calix sighed inwardly, trying to soothe the seething anger from flaring out. Despite knowing how Xander was as a person, he still couldn’t accept it.
Yes, Calix knew that he was partly to blame. He told his friends that he chose Leslie because she was in a coma thus, she could serve as his shield against the other young ladies.
Yet... Xander’s question was still too much.
Xander narrowed his eyes, sensing displeasure emanating from Calix. It was rare to perceive such a negative feeling from this good friend of his.
"You know I’m telling the truth, Calix," Xander vocalized his thoughts, his husky voice adding pressure to his coming remark, "Will the Li family bring you benefits in this marriage? No. Instead, they’ll gain advantages from you. It’s not like you marry her because you love her."
Calix silently clasped his hands together, feeling how taut his jaw was in an attempt to stay patient. Yet, his blazing gaze told Xander and Davin otherwise.
"Why can’t you just wish me all the best? Who knows? Love might come between us? Yet, you immediately asked me to toss her away?"
Xander pursed his lips, dissatisfaction was written through his wrinkling brows.
"How? I’ve heard how useless the Li family’s eldest miss is. Such a woman won’t fit you, Calix. You need..."
"Do you really believe such rumors? Don’t you dare smear my wife’s name in front of me, Xander Qin!"
