Chapter 154: Would the Third File Has the Answer?
Sitting on the couch facing the sliding doors, Leslie quietly looked at the serene night view through the glass panels. Faint shadows were cast on her somber face, expressing the turbulence in her heart.
After having dinner together, Calix brought Leslie back to the bedroom. He moved her from the wheelchair to the couch before walking out, saying that he would get the file for her.
Calix had just left but, the wait felt so long. Pursing her lips, Leslie connected telepathically with Mimo. The crochet fox toy was sitting on her lap, invisible to other people but her.
’Mimo... will I find Poppy tonight? I’m afraid that... it’ll be another failure.’
More than a month had passed ever since Leslie transmigrated to this world. She was grateful because she was not really restricted by the storyline—the one unknown to her—but, uncertainties about her future still plagued her heart.
If possible, Leslie wished to go to Calliope right this instant. Unfortunately, she had no cheat that allowed her to find her little daughter by herself. She had to rely on Calix by using the standard method.
We’ll find out by looking at the new information, Leslie. I’m sorry... I can’t be of much help to you.
Mimo’s bleak tone stunned Leslie. She didn’t mean to make the fox toy feel bad. Lifting one hand, she slowly stroked its head.
’Mimo, I’m sorry. I don’t mean that. I appreciate your presence here. Without your constant encouragement, I might give up long ago.’
Mimo pressed its head against Leslie’s tummy, hugging her right arm with its short limbs. Its actions brushed a corner of her heart.
I miss Poppy. I want us three to meet again. I’ll always accompany you, Leslie. Let’s believe in ourselves, en?
Leslie’s curled her lips into a smile. Nodding, she continued speaking inwardly, ’Yes. Let’s do that. We need to have faith in ourselves.’
Brushing one index finger on Mimo’s pointed nose, Leslie sighed in relief after sensing the improvement in the crochet fox toy’s mood. She didn’t want to simply treat it as a soulless object.
Knock! Knock!
"Leslie, I’m coming in."
Leslie heard Calix’s familiar footsteps walking inside the room, approaching the coach. In no time, he appeared right in front of her with a file in both hands. She noticed the unsettled look on his face.
"Come and... sit down..." Leslie tapped the seat next to her twice, her lips smiling faintly at Calix, "Didn’t you say... you’ll... accompany me when... looking through... the file?"
Calix exhaled a sigh, nodding once, "I did say that. It’s just... fine. I’ll try not to worry too much."
Leslie was actually happy when Calix offered to stay with her when she checked the new information. Even though she didn’t dare to tell him the truth about who Calliope was to her yet, his presence would surely offer some comfort to her.
Throughout the past month, Leslie learned the gist of Calix’s personality.
Despite his tendency to banter with others, he was a considerate and fine gentleman. He didn’t cross the boundaries by prying into what she wanted to keep secret.
Calix sat next to Leslie, his eyes shifting from the file to her anticipated look. With a heavy heart, he opened the file before placing it on her lap. The first page was revealed to both of them.
"Can you flip the pages yourself?" asked Calix cautiously, looking briefly at Leslie’s dainty fingers, "I can do it if you can’t."
Calix initially just wanted to offer the service to Leslie but, he quickly changed his words before letting them slip out of his mouth. Knowing her, she would rather try it herself before waving the white flag.
Leslie’s smile softened. Brushing the edge of the printed paper, she replied, "I will do it... I can..."
Calix nodded, not saying anything about it anymore, "Take your time, Leslie."
Leslie’s eyes were still sensitive to light. Because she needed to see the photo and read the information, Calix didn’t dim the brightness of the bedroom’s lights. She wore a special pair of sunglasses right now to ease her eyestrain.
With Calix by her side and Mimo on her lap, Leslie slowly read the information presented on the first page. The first thing she did was actually look at the photo of the little girl.
The young one was an adorable child yet, Leslie knew she was not her Calliope.
’I don’t feel anything, Mimo.’
Leslie glanced at Mimo. She slowly brushed her finger on the paper, flipping it to the next page.
Leslie! Keep looking! Let’s get our hopes up!
A small smile was carved on Leslie’s lips. Following Mimo’s encouragement, she continued reading. She also sensed Calix’s eyes on her despite not returning his gaze.
The bedroom was quiet save for the faint sound of pages flipping and their breathing.
Leslie occasionally took a short break to rest her eyes for a moment. Calix continued staying by her side, unknowingly offering her comfort.
Halfway through the file, Leslie still didn’t find the information she wanted. Pursing her lips, she paused from turning the pages. Her eyes stared blankly at the current page presented to her.
"Do you want to rest? Continue it tomorrow?" asked Calix quietly, his tone imbued with uncertainty, "There’s still half."
Calix perceived the look of impending disappointment marring Leslie’s countenance. He could already imagine how downhearted she would be if once again her search was fruitless.
Leslie blinked, quietly taking in Calix’s words laced with concern. Her eyes drifted from her finger at the corner of the page, trailing in the air before she slowly looked at the young man.
Calix didn’t talk much when Leslie was looking through the file. But, it didn’t mean he stopped being worried about her. His gaze expressed the concern brimming in his heart.
"I’ll continue... until the end..." Leslie slowly moved her hand from the file, reaching out to the back of Calix’s, "Thank you... for staying... with me..."
Calix gently took Leslie’s hand in his, enveloping them in his broad palm. None of them realized when such physical touch became a norm between them.
"Don’t say that. Well... I don’t know who this Calliope is but, I want you to meet her. For your wish to come true."
Calix inwardly acknowledged that Leslie kept a few matters from him but, he wouldn’t force her to tell him yet. He believed that eventually, she would reveal them to him.
But, not yet.
Leslie let out a faint chuckle. Smiling, she said, "I’ll continue... there’s just... another half left."
"...yes."
Calix reluctantly let go of Leslie’s hand. She started flipping the pages again, giving her full attention to the file. He watched her side profile, unwilling to look away.
Until...
"L-Leslie? Why... why are you crying?"
Caught off guard by what he was seeing, Calix reached out for Leslie’s back and one of her arms. She quivered when suddenly tears streaming down her face.
Leslie’s breath hitched. Her tear-laden eyes were fixated on a photo, a few drops falling to the page, "Calix... she... I found her..."
"...what?"
Leslie shakily held the file, unwilling to move her eyes away from a photo of a little girl.
"Calliope... she... I found her..."
Stunned, Calix shifted his eyes from Leslie to the page smeared with her tears.
A young girl aged five was smiling adorably at the camera lens. Her round eyes expressed her joy at having her photo taken.
Calliope Li. Age five. Harmony Haven Orphanage.
