Chapter 153: She Would Do It On Her Own Pace

Leslie’s first rehab session went smoothly much to her delight. Her therapists began the session by familiarizing themselves with her before starting with simple therapies.

Ms. Katherine Chen was responsible for her physical and occupational therapy. Ms. Noelle Yao handled her speech therapy.

Dr. Mo highly recommended both of them. The three of them had worked together for several patients before.

In the beginning, Leslie’s rehab sessions with Ms. Chen and Ms. Yao would take four to five times a week. The frequencies would gradually lessen once the improvement of her situation reached the benchmark set by the therapists.

"Mrs. Xu, your muscle loss is mild compared to most patients," said Ms. Chen while gently pressing Leslie’s right arm at the end of their session, "But, it’s inevitable for you to feel pain during."

Leslie quietly stared at Ms. Chen. Being in the early 30s, the therapist was only a few years older than her. Both Ms. Chen and Ms. Yao treated her well.

After the end of the speech therapy session, Ms. Yao left. She needed to head back to the hospital. Ms. Chen took over her place.

"I know..." Leslie spoke slowly, understanding what Ms. Chen was telling her, "I won’t... rush myself to... get better... I’ll do it... on my pace..."

Leslie would lie to herself if she said she never had that thought. If possible, she wanted to recover fully as soon as possible. Yet, doing so might damage her weakened body.

Leslie still remembered how Charlene entrusted this body including her life in this world to her. She had to treat it better. Harming herself was akin to betraying her promise to Charlene.

"I’m glad you think like that, Mrs. Xu. Even if you feel discouraged later, please have faith in yourself. Instead of other people, you’re the one who benefits from getting better the most."

Ms. Chen lowered Leslie’s right hand, placing it on the latter’s lap. She continued sitting opposite Leslie. A smile was carved on her lips as she gave words of encouragement to Leslie.

"Mrs. Xu, I’ve met patients who gave up halfway before they picked up their strength to continue. I just want to say that it’s fine if you want to take a break in the middle. You need to pay attention to your mental health as well as your physical one. They need to be balanced."

Leslie intently listened to Ms. Chen. The therapist spent quite some time sharing her experience with the former, allowing Leslie to learn more from her.

Dr. Mo, Ms. Chen and Ms. Yao all shared the same view. They guessed Leslie would recover—if not fully, half—within three months.

Around that time, spring should have already changed into summer. Perhaps, she could run barefoot on the shoreline and even swim alongside the waves of the sea.

And...

A little one happily followed her around, enjoying the dazzling summer.

"Am I interrupting?"

Those words followed the echoes of knocking on the door, shattering Leslie’s imagination.

Tilting her head up, Leslie stared past Ms. Chen’s shoulders. Blinking, she couldn’t believe that she was looking at Calix now.

When did he get home?

It was still early ah. The clock hadn’t even pointed to four.

Calix moved away from the door, taking long strides to where Leslie was sitting. Ms. Chen also noticed his sudden appearance.

"Hello, Mr. Xu. You’re not interrupting," Ms. Chen swiftly rose to her feet, giving Calix a polite nod, "The first session has ended. Mrs. Xu did well."

Calix raised his brows, looking so pleased. Standing behind Leslie’s wheelchair, he replied to Ms. Chen, "It’s good to hear that. Please continue taking care of my wife, Ms. Chen."

"We will work hard to ensure Mrs. Xu’s recovery," Ms. Chen spoke firmly. Smiling at Leslie, she said, "Seems like it’s time for me to leave. We’ll meet again next Monday, Mrs. Xu."

The weekend began tomorrow. Leslie wouldn’t have any sessions until the new week started. The schedule might change if they were necessary.

"Thank you... Ms. Chen," Leslie returned the therapist’s smile, "Be careful... on your way... back..."

"I will," Ms. Chen’s eyes drifted to Calix for a moment before returning to Leslie, "Mr. Xu and Mrs. Xu, see you two again. Have a good weekend."

Calix simply nodded while Leslie weakly waved her right hand. In no time, Ms. Chen’s figure disappeared behind the gym door, leaving the husband and wife alone there.

"Did you... just arrive?" Leslie shifted her focus to Calix. The man took a seat on the chair occupied by Ms. Chen earlier, "Finished work... early?"

"I still have some work but, I can do it this weekend," tilting his head, Calix carefully looked at Leslie’s countenance, "How was today? The therapists didn’t start much yet, en?"

Leslie replied with a shake of her head before saying, "Ms. Chen... and Ms. Yao... don’t want me to be... in a rush... They... suggested that... I take my time..."

"That’s good advice," Calix shared the same view as the therapists, "Dr. Mo told you the same thing, right? Leslie, you’ll get better so, don’t force your body. Take your time, okay?"

Leslie smiled faintly, understanding Calix was being worried about her, "...okay."

"Let’s go upstairs," Calix stood up from the chair, walking to the back of Leslie’s wheelchair, "Aunt Wendy said she’ll make fish soup for dinner today. It’s delicious, I assure you. You can have it with the porridge."

"That sound... delicious..." Leslie’s eyes glinted in anticipation, glancing at Calix behind her, "Mr. Xu... when else can... I... try your cooking?"

Calix had made porridge for Leslie a few times this week. Still, most of her meals were prepared by Aunt Wendy. She missed eating solid food but, her weak throat couldn’t handle those kinds of dishes yet.

"Wanna try other porridges or soups? How about some pumpkin soup? But, I think it’s better as some kind of snack between your meals."

"It’ll... be good... hehe... if you made it someday... I’ll have it..."

"Alright. Let me make it tomorrow, how about that?"

While talking about food, Calix and Leslie left the gym. The elevator was just a few feet away from the gym entrance. In a short time, they arrived at the second floor.

Calix pushed Leslie out of the elevator, heading to her bedroom.

"Oh, Leslie."

Hearing her name called by Calix, Leslie stiffly turned her head. She barely saw his face until he stepped forward from behind, letting their eyes meet. He stopped from pushing the wheelchair.

"I’ve brought the file back," said Calix, sounding a bit hesitant, "I’ll give it to you after dinner. But... can I stay with you when you read it?"

Leslie blinked, never expecting to hear Calix requesting that. All this time, he gave her private space after handing her those files.

"...okay. You can... stay with me."

Without thinking much, Leslie agreed. For some reason, she also wanted Calix to be present when she looked through the new pile of information.

"Thanks..." Calix smiled faintly, exhaling a sigh of relief, "Well, dinner won’t be ready yet. How about you have a short rest?"

"En."

Following her nod, Calix continued pushing Leslie’s wheelchair. She didn’t see how his expression changed from relief to worry once again.
