Chapter 155: After a Long Wait, She Finally Achieved One of Her Goals

Despite trying not to be disappointed, Leslie actually had a hard time to continue flipping the pages to the next. Fear plagued her heart as she thought this search would result in another failure.

Then...

When Leslie’s eyes fell on the next photo, relief and joy abruptly overwhelmed her heart. Her tears ran down her cheeks without any warning as if they were waiting for this moment.

Was this real?

As Leslie’s gaze was stuck to the photo, the words she never expected to mutter tonight took over her mind and heart.

Calliope...

This was her Calliope!

Her precious daughter!

|Leslie! This is Poppy! You found her!|

Mimo’s eager voice brought Leslie back to reality before she wandered further to the land of uncertainties. The crochet fox toy happily danced on her lap before hugging her arm.

|Poppy! We found her! We found Poppy!|

Caught in a trance, Leslie faintly heard Calix calling out to her worriedly. His broad palm secured a place on her back while the other held her arm.

"L-Leslie? Why... why are you crying?"

Ah... how joyful this moment was. But, she couldn’t stop crying.

With difficulty, Leslie shakily verbalized what was in her heart. Her eyes were blurred with tears yet, she kept looking at the photo.

"Calix... she... I found her... Calliope... she... I found her..."

Leslie didn’t notice Calix’s unfathomable gaze on Calliope’s photo as he read the little one’s information. His voice was barely audible to her as her ears filtered out most sounds.

"Calliope Li... resides in Harmony Haven Orphanage," Calix murmured, raising his brows in bewilderment, "This girl... is she the one you’re looking for?"

Leslie nodded, answering Calix firmly, "Yes. She is... the one I’m... looking for... I don’t... mistake her... with anyone else..."

Leslie found it hard to speak more coherently as her emotions were in a jumbled state. But, she wanted to make it clear to Calix that she was speaking the truth.

Her search was finally over. Now, she just needed to meet her daughter face to face.

Calix blinked, perceiving how firm Leslie was when replying to him just now. His eyes shifted from her side profile to the photo.

Leslie slightly turned her neck, staring at Calix. A hint of uneasiness overtook her joyful heart. She couldn’t help but wonder what he had in mind.

Leslie unconsciously held the file tighter. She nervously gazed at Calix parting his mouth, waiting for his words to flow out.

Would he come up with more questions for her?

What if he doubted her claim?

"Leslie, congratulations. You’ve found the little girl you’re looking for."

"...huh?"

Blinking her eyes, Leslie quietly stared at Calix’s countenance. His initially concerned gaze mellowed as relief and joy imbued his eyes. His lips also formed a genuine smile for her.

Leslie was not sure to what extent Calix trusted her but, his congratulatory words helped to dissuade her worries.

Once again Calix read the information that was printed on the paper. "Harmony Haven Orphanage... this place is far from our city. No wonder we couldn’t find her quicker. It’s in another city."

Edward detailed everything about the orphans’ background and the care homes where they were placed. He also included the orphanages’ respective contact information.

Harmony Haven Orphanage was located in a small town in Bridgeland City. The place was three hours and a half ride through the expressway, down south of Silvercrest City.

"Oh... She’s the only girl named Calliope at the orphanage. If we go there, the director won’t mistake her with anyone else. I think the kids have the director’s surname like most places."

Leslie quietly listened to Calix, agreeing with his view. Tears still streamed down her cheeks but, the whirlwind of her emotions gradually stabilized.

Just the fact of knowing where Calliope was eased a lot of Leslie’s worries about her daughter. They could be reunited in just a matter of time.

Taking off the glasses, Leslie lowered them to the vacant seat. She kept her eyes closed for a moment, wanting to adjust them to the light.

"...en?"

Opening her eyes, Leslie felt a warm touch under her right eye. Calix suddenly brushed his thumb on her tear-stricken face, leaving a faint sensation on her skin.

"Are you happy, Leslie?"

Calix’s tone was laced with a smile. He was genuinely happy for Leslie. After a long wait, she finally achieved one of her goals.

Leslie nodded, returning Calix’s smile. Hesitating, she said, "Even if I want... to meet her now... I can’t, en?"

Leslie understood the current extent of her physical mobility. Despite desperately wishing to go to Calliope and hug her daughter tight, her weakened body would be a hindrance to her.

Mimo’s words were deeply cemented into Leslie’s mind. Calliope wouldn’t remember any single thing about her life before transmigrating to this new world.

If Leslie abruptly appeared—especially in a wheelchair—and claimed the little one as her daughter, wouldn’t her action confuse and scare Calliope?

Calix lowered his hand from Leslie’s face. His smoothened brows creased again, conveying an answer that she wouldn’t like to hear yet, had to.

"The long ride won’t be good for you. Even if we go there by helicopter or a flight, I don’t think you’re in a good state to meet her, Leslie."

Yes. That was the bitter truth.

Leslie refrained from expressing her disappointment. She already anticipated the answer from Calix.

What should she do? Even if she managed to recover in three months, it would be another long wait for her.

Leslie had been dearly missing Calliope all this time. She couldn’t imagine having to endure a few more months before their first meeting.

Calix lifted one hand, hesitating for a moment before continuing with what he wished to do. He placed his arm on Leslie’s back before bringing her head to his chest, startling her.

But...

Leslie didn’t move. She didn’t want to pull away from Calix’s sudden embrace. Hidden deep within her, her heart began to swell with overflowing warmth and relief.

"Later... let’s wait until you get better a bit," Calix’s voice echoed over Leslie’s head. He slowly traced circles on her shoulder, "In the meantime, I’ll always check on her for you. How about that?"

"...really?"

Calix’s words were another surprise to Leslie. She slowly tilted up, staring at his smiling gaze.

"Yes. For the time being, I’ll have people to keep an eye on her so, you don’t have to worry too much," Calix briefly explained his plan, "I’ll also check if the orphanage needs additional assistance or funds."

There was something Calix hadn’t told Leslie. Ever since Edward started his search, he notified his chief assistant to provide help to every orphanage despite knowing Calliope might not be there.

"Y-yes... thank you, Calix..."

Leslie lowered her face, feeling bad to let Calix see her crying again but, she couldn’t help it. His reassurance dispelled the new buds of worries in her heart. They didn’t even get to sprout yet.

Calix smiled in relief. He made a mental note to quickly inform Edward. This matter had to be done as soon as possible. He silently continued embracing the crying Leslie.

Hundreds of kilometers away from Silvercrest City, at a small building in Frostwich Town...
