Chapter 152: Her Frugal Heart Hurt
Using the little of her strength, Leslie reached out for Calix’s arm, weakly grasping his sleeve. He still rested his palm against the back of the wheelchair. Their eyes collided with each other.
Leslie carefully took in Calix’s facial expression imbued with concern. Her gaze fell briefly on the two little moles under his left eye. The glow came from the moonlight and garden lamps illuminating his face.
Pressing her thumb on his arm, Leslie slowly spoke, "You’re worried... about me... I appreciate that... Calix... But, I still want to... see it... I want to... know..."
Considering her weakened condition right now, Leslie understood that she couldn’t do much even if she finally met Calliope. Yet, her longing for her precious daughter had grown too deep.
If possible, Leslie refused to waste any second. Unfortunately, the reality was not as ideal as her wish.
Calix pressed his lips together, seeing the firm resolution glinting in Leslie’s eyes. Despite being in a fragile state, her unyielding determination seeped out through her words and gaze.
Moving his hand away from the back of the wheelchair, Calix gently took Leslie’s. His broad palm enveloped her tiny hand, warming her chilly digits.
"Leslie... are you certain?" hesitating, Calix tried to coax Leslie into pushing the matter away for the time being, "Can’t you wait... at least until you’re half-better?"
Leslie understood that Calix was always being considerate of her well-being. Even though he asked her that, she didn’t sense any threatening pressure coming from him.
Perhaps, it was better if she said he sounded almost begging, much to her helplessness.
Leslie grazed her thumb in the middle of Calix’s palm. Keeping her eyes steady on his concerned ones, she slowly shook her head, causing lights to sway on her face.
"Please, Calix... Give me the... new information... I want it..."
Calix pursed his lips into a straight line, his countenance slightly darkened. Exhaling a sigh, he nodded once.
Despite Calix wanting to continue persuading Leslie to change her mind, he knew where to stop. She had made it clear that she wouldn’t have second thoughts.
"If my wife desires that, there’s nothing I can do," Calix shrugged, wearing a helpless expression, "Okay. The file is in my office. I’ll bring it home tomorrow."
Leslie chuckled, her gaze softening as she felt soft feathers gently tickling her heart.
"Thank you... Mr. Xu."
Thank you for genuinely being worried about her.
And, thank you for being willing to compromise with her.
"Wanna stroll by the lake?" Calix slowly let go of Leslie’s hand while he rose to his feet, "It’s still early. We can go back inside if you’re tired."
Calix’s wristwatch pointed to eight-forty. There was plenty of time left before ten struck. Leslie usually went to bed around that time unless she was thoroughly drained of energy.
If Leslie was still in her soul form, Calix might bring her to President Wang’s 60th birthday banquet tonight. He had a hunch that she would love seeing the lively party.
Calix told Edward to cancel his attendance right on the day Leslie regained consciousness. His chief assistant personally delivered a gift to President Wang. That should be able to make up for his sudden absence.
"I’d love that... let’s go..."
Even though Leslie couldn’t feel much energy brimming in this fragile body, she still wanted to feel the night air. Being outdoors after staying inside the huge manor all day did wonders for her mind and mood.
"Aye aye, ma’am."
Holding the handles back with both hands, Calix carefully pulled Leslie’s wheelchair before turning it in the right direction. While strolling by the lake, he continued telling her stories about what happened at the office today.
The gentle breeze carried Calix’s words to Leslie. Most of the time, her lips curved into a smile as she was amused by his stories.
’Somehow, the lake looks more enchanting tonight.’
While listening to Calix, Leslie’s gaze drifted to the body of water. The dazzling moon was reflected on its surface, leaving sparkles on its wake as the water rippled.
Clasping her hands together, Leslie silently made an ardent wish – to be reunited with her daughter.
No matter how many times Leslie had done the same thing, she wouldn’t stop. She believed her prayers would be answered one day.
Hopefully, soon.
After a short stroll by the lake, Calix brought Leslie back to the manor. Before they entered the house, he carefully carried her up from the wheelchair. The one she used just now was for the outdoors.
A few days ago, Calix surprised Leslie with another wheelchair. He said it was a hassle to clean the tires every time they went outside. Thus, the new wheelchair was exclusively used inside the huge manor.
Leslie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She couldn’t help but mourn the loss of money used to buy the expensive wheelchair despite the money spent belonging to Calix.
Urgh... Her frugal heart hurt.
Calix pushed the indoor wheelchair toward the glass elevator. Mrs. Su was on duty tonight. Because Leslie had woken up, the former arranged the private nurses’ schedule again.
Someone experienced needed to be close by just in case Leslie required some assistance.
"Do you need anything else?" asked Calix as he carried Leslie from the wheelchair to the bed. He carefully lay her on the mattress, "How about a glass of milk? I’ll heat it for you."
"It’s fine..." Leslie vaguely shook her head, watching Calix who pulled the blanket to cover her body, "You should... head back to your... room too..."
"I will," Calix smiled lop-sidedly. He gently patted one of Leslie’s shoulders, "Tomorrow is a big day for you. Don’t fret too much about it. You’ll be fine."
"I won’t..." Leslie chuckled, her smile illuminated by the light cast by the table lamp, "I will do... my best..."
"Yes, do your best," raising one hand, Calix gave Leslie a thumb-up, "Imagine the day you can explore the backyard all by yourself again."
Leslie smiled in helplessness, amused by Calix’s way of encouraging.
Within a few hours, the most-awaited first session would start.
