Chapter 151: She Missed Going Out When the Sun Was Out
True to Calix’s words, the gym in the first basement was converted to a rehabilitation treatment room for Leslie.
A group of people came the next day, Sunday. They were assigned the task of realizing his vision.
"It will be more convenient for you. You don’t have to hurry to the hospital back and forth many times a week. Doesn’t it mean you can quickly return to your room to rest?"
Those were Calix’s answers when Leslie inquired about the importance of him doing this. She didn’t want to trouble him more than necessary—not after already asking him for many favors—but, he reassured her that everything was fine.
"I’m doing this for myself, okay? I’ll get good publicity if people know how considerate I am to my wife. I won’t get beaten and nagged by my grandma too."
Calix’s excuses cracked Leslie up. Of course, she couldn’t laugh out loud. Still, her heart was tickled by how hilarious the man’s reasons were.
Starting Monday, Calix went to the company as usual. Leslie was usually still asleep during the time he left for work, leaving her with either Mrs. Su and Mrs. An. Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond as well.
In the first few days after Leslie regained consciousness, she couldn’t help but keep dozing off. The private nurses and Aunt Wendy often accompanied her when she was awake.
Even though Leslie couldn’t talk much to them, she was happy to hear random stories from the older ladies. They were also patient with her when her pronunciation was disorganized.
At night, Leslie often had dinner with Calix. He made sure to come home on time to dine together.
Then, Calix would bring Leslie to the backyard to get some fresh night air. At the same time, she listened to his stories.
"I know I’ll be a lot happier going to work if those old men stopped giving me trouble. They dared to fight in front of me?! So childish!"
"Edward said the female staff shared gossip. A few of them spotted a white figure on Floor 19 at midnight. Leslie, was that your ghost friend?"
"The cafeteria served delicious strawberry pretzel pies today. You should try it sometime later, Leslie. Oh, no, no. Instead of eating the cafeteria’s pie, how about I try making one?"
Leslie didn’t feel as discouraged as before. She looked forward to the start of her rehab. Through the new health checkups that she did with Dr. Mo, the physician finally came up with an organized plan for her.
At the same time, the gym had been successfully turned into a rehabilitation center exclusively for Leslie. She would start her first session this Friday.
After having dinner together that Thursday, Calix draped a shawl around Leslie’s neck. He also unfolded a throw blanket to cover her legs.
They planned to take a stroll toward the lake. The spring night air was quite chilly.
"I can see... the lake... sparkling," whispered Leslie as she was pushed closer to the lake. The gentle breeze carried her words to Calix, "I remember... the river at Rome."
Almost one week passed from the night Calix surprised Leslie with the candlelight dinner by the river. She also still fondly remembered the short yet magical time of them dancing under the moonlight.
Chuckling softly, Calix continued pushing the wheelchair, "You better remember it for a lifetime ah. I spent my time and energy to prepare the surprise."
Smiling, Leslie shook her head in helplessness. Calix still had time to boast about his effort, not that she found it annoying.
Calix paused his steps once they reached a few feet away from the lake bank. Standing behind Leslie’s wheelchair, he quietly looked down at her, wondering what her expression was like.
"Weren’t you bored today?" Calix stepped away from the back, crouching next to the wheelchair, "You couldn’t do much even if you want to. Lucky that you got to explore Rome a lot before you woke up."
Leslie slowly turned her head, staring at Calix. He was looking at the lake.
"It was indeed... a good and lucky... thing. I’m bored... can’t deny it. I look forward to... getting better. I miss going... out when... the sun’s out."
Leslie’s eyes were still sensitive to light. She wanted to take a stroll under the sun as well but, the situation would just put her in discomfort. She really hoped to recover most of her physical functions within three months.
’He hasn’t mentioned anything about it. Should I ask him now?’
Leslie wanted to know if Edward had given another file to Calix regarding the finding. The chief assistant was a diligent man. She doubted that he hadn’t compiled the new information together.
Yet, Calix hadn’t said even a single thing. Leslie initially guessed it might be because Edward was busy during the former’s week-long business trip. Still, she couldn’t help but want to know.
Pursing her lips, Leslie weakly raised one hand. She held the shawl tighter, the refreshing yet cool breeze caressing her cheeks.
"...Calix."
Hearing the call of his name, Calix tilted up his head, locking his eyes on Leslie. He didn’t notice that her gaze was already on him.
"En? Are you cold?" stretching out an arm, Calix grabbed the back of Leslie’s wheelchair. His entire focus was on her, "Do you wanna go back inside?"
Calix usually let Leslie stay in the backyard for not more than an hour. Not even half an hour had passed. He wondered if she was more tired today.
"Ah," Calix was reminded of something, "Are you nervous about tomorrow’s sessions? Don’t be ah. You’ll feel a little bit of discomfort but, remember that it’s for your own good."
Leslie blinked, amused by Calix’s chattering. Shaking her head, she quietly replied, "It’s not... about that. I want... to ask you... about something."
"Oh, I thought it’s about your rehab tomorrow," Calix laughed awkwardly. Still staring at Leslie, he said, "Go on. Ask me anything. Tho I won’t guarantee the answers."
Leslie’s lips melted into a smile. Parting her lips, she slowly asked, "About... the finding. Has Edward... discovered anything new?"
Calix paused, slightly caught off guard by Leslie’s question. He didn’t foresee her inquiring about the matter this soon right when she was preoccupied with too many things regarding her health.
Leslie opened her eyes wider, sensing something was different from Calix’s countenance. Faint shadows obscured his face as the moonlight beamed from his back, casting a soft glow through his short strands of hair.
The answer was out in the open. It seemed like he didn’t, or rather wouldn’t, try to hide.
"There is... one, right?" Leslie unconsciously tightened her grasp on the shawl, "...are you keeping... it quiet... for now?"
"...yes," answered Calix monotonously.
Calix was adept at putting on a facade yet, he was reluctant to do so in front of Leslie despite knowing she might be upset with him. His resolve that he built a few days ago shattered with just one question from her.
"Are you... worried... about me... being... disappointed again?" Leslie tried to soften her hoarse voice, "Or... is there... another... reason?"
"I’m worried," Calix firmly replied, his brows furrowing, "What if... it’ll hinder your treatment? It hasn’t even properly started yet."
Leslie smiled in helplessness. Rather than being mad because Calix hid the matter, his consideration gently touched the depth of her heart.
