Chapter 143: The Faint Flicker of His Hope Burned Brighter Again

"Hey... I’m scared of Boss ah," Mr. Hao whispered to his colleague Mr. Tan, his tone was akin to a whisper, "Why did he... suddenly act like that?"

Mr. Tan blinked, wondering the same question. His gaze drifted to their boss’ private lounge. Even though no sound coming from its direction, the silence seemed to be very imposing.

"I’ve never seen him like that," Mr. Tan replied, frowning deeply. While tapping his chin, he exhaled a sigh, "It’s weird when he started looking for something but he didn’t tell us what."

"Yeah... then he began calling his private residence," Mr. Hao shook his head as he recalled their boss’ eccentric yet frightening antic, "I think I heard him telling the nurse to keep checking on his wife."

"Maybe Boss Xu had a nightmare about his wife? Who knows? After all, he has been away for a week."

Mr. Tan and Mr. Hao let out a collective sigh. Thinking about their boss’ peculiar behavior that started out of nowhere made them unable to sleep in peace.

Thankfully they had three days off due to the exhausting business trip. Two from the weekend days while the other fell Monday on the next day. They couldn’t afford to be away longer from work.

"I’m sleepy," Mr. Tan yawned, moving away from the corridor, "I wanna get some shut eye."

"Urgh... me too," Mr. Hao agreed, rubbing his drooping eyes, "Let’s just hope Boss Xu feels better before we land."

"Yeah, yeah. Come, bro."

Mr. Tan and Mr. Hao retreated to where their in-flight bedrooms were, wishing the time would turn faster.

Calix didn’t know that his subordinates were talking about him. Isolating himself in the private lounge, his tensed brows carrying his uneasiness despite receiving good news from Mrs. An.

"...it’s good that she’s well but, make sure to call Dr. Mo as soon as possible. I want my wife to have a thorough checkup. Ah, forget it. I’ll bring her to Dr. Mo this morning."

Calix was dreading Leslie’s well-being when Mrs. An called him, conveying the news that Leslie had regained her consciousness. Hearing it lifted a huge load off his chest.

How could he not?

She vanished in front of his damn eyes! Terror caused by helplessly watching her fade into tiny lights still made him shudder.

Calix regretted not being able to grab Leslie’s hands but, even if he did, he knew she would still disappear. The incident seemed bound to happen no matter what he did.

Driven by his fear, Calix went looking for Leslie everywhere in the entire flight. He didn’t care about startling his subordinates and the others. But, he was so frustrated about not being able to order them to join the search.

Then, a small light glinted in his dark mind, conjuring a thought.

What if Leslie disappeared because she returned to her unconscious body? Wouldn’t that be the most probable scenario?

The faint flicker of his hope burned brighter again. Calix immediately contacted Mrs. An.

"How’s my wife’s condition tonight? Is she better? Has she woken up? If she hasn’t, pay more attention to her than usual. Mrs. An, I entrust you with this."

Even after instructing Mrs. An with the new order, Calix couldn’t push his anxiousness at bay. He really thought that Leslie had regained consciousness. But, the private nurse’s hourly report didn’t bring news he wanted to hear.

Until now.

"I’ll do that, Mr. Xu. I assure you that Mrs. Xu is in a good state. Mr. Xu, actually, your wife wants to talk to you. She can’t speak clearly yet but..."

"Y-yes! Put her on the phone!" Calix immediately cut the rest of Mrs. An’s words.

Grasping his phone tightly, Calix heard a buzzing sound echoing in his ears, coming from his frantic heartbeat.

She wanted to talk to him! How could he not think of doing that first?

When Mrs. An relayed news of Leslie’s waking up, Calix was too focused on knowing about her condition. His chaotic heart only got the semblance of relief after learning that she was generally fine despite suffering from some side effects.

Calix heard Mrs. An saying something to Leslie in the background. Swallowing his saliva, he waited with bated breaths.

This... this would be their first conversation after her soul returned to her body.

"...hello, Calix."

Calix’s eyes widened, unable to believe his ears. Despite sounding so hoarse, he still recognized the sound was Leslie’s voice.

"L-Leslie?" Calix softened his tone, afraid of startling Leslie whose body was still weakened by her long coma, "You... I was worried. Thank goodness, you really woke up."

"...yeah, sorry," Leslie paused, coughing a little, "I didn’t... expect this... too."

Calix exhaled a sigh. The creases on his forehead softened. He understood what Leslie meant.

"You must be tired, en? I’ll land in less than three hours. Why don’t you have some rest? Mrs. An said your body is still recovering."

Calix enunciated every word, assuming a calming intonation when talking to Leslie. He spoke so gently as if he was coaxing a child.

"...okay," Leslie quietly murmured, almost inaudible to Calix’s ears, "I will... wait for... you to arrive."

"En," Calix nodded despite knowing Leslie couldn’t see him, "Good night, Leslie. Remember that you’ve woken up. This is not a dream."

"...yes. Calix... good night."

Following the end of Leslie’s voice was Mrs. An’s. Calix instructed the private nurse to keep him updated if anything happened. He also told her to keep Leslie’s current condition from anyone.

Only after giving Mrs. An several reminders did Calix finally hang up.

Lowering the phone down, Calix breathed out an exhausted sigh. He pinched the space between his eyebrows, feeling a headache threatening him.

"Thank goodness... she’s fine..."

Mrs. An mentioned that Leslie had difficulty moving her body – the lack of her fine motor control, coordination and balance. This also resulted in her impaired speech.

As a former coma patient, Calix understood the strenuous rehabilitation program Leslie had to undergo soon. He could only pray that her suffering was less than his.

"Let’s get her checked before I tell everyone. Yeah... it’s better to do that. I need her to agree too."

Certainly, the news about Leslie regaining consciousness would receive two kinds of reactions.

Delight and disappointment.
