Chapter 142: She Had to Reach Him Now!

"Mimo... where are you? P-please... answer me..."

Driven by her anxiousness, tears started pooling in Leslie’s eyes. She continued crying Mimo’s name out loud.

"P-please, Mimo! Answer me!"

Please! Please!

Leslie!

Pop!

Under Leslie’s surprised gaze, Mimo jumped out of nowhere, landing on her lap. The red fox toy rested its upper limbs on her right arm.

"M-Mimo!"

Leslie! I’m sorry! I couldn’t answer your call!

Perplexed, Leslie stared at Mimo. She really thought that the fox toy wouldn’t appear in front of her again.

"Mimo... I’m so... worried..."

I’m sorry, Leslie. I didn’t mean to make you worry.

Leslie’s eyes were only able to make out faint outlines in the dark but, she was sure the crochet toy was looking at her.

"What... happened?" Leslie forced herself to speak. Her throat felt so dry, affecting her intonation, "I thought... I could no... longer... call you. I met... Charlene... earlier..."

I know, I know that you met her, Leslie. I’m sorry, I wanted to go to you too but, I was stopped.

Leslie exhaled a sigh. She had a hunch that Mimo wouldn’t tell her what had stopped it from reaching out to her.

’It’s okay, Mimo,’ Leslie changed to speak to the fox toy telepathically. Feebly lifting one hand, she placed her palm on Mimo’s soft head, ’I’m just relieved because you’re still here.’

Leslie, I won’t leave you and Poppy.

Mimo nuzzled its head against Leslie’s arm, inciting her to deepen her smile. Looking up from the crochet fox toy, she slowly threw her gaze around.

’Mimo, I vanished just like that in front of Calix. What time is it now? Is he still in the flight?’

The room was too dark. Leslie barely made out the faint glow of moonlight slipping through the tiny gap of the blackout curtain. The eerie silence ghosted shivers down her spine.

Was it the early evening? Or, midnight had long passed?

The private jet should land around five in the morning. Leslie couldn’t tell what time was it now but, she needed to get ahold of Calix as soon as possible — to ease his worries about her disappearance.

It’s almost two in the morning. Leslie, don’t be too worried. CEO Xu will return soon. Why don’t you take some rest? Your body is still weak.

Leslie gasped, unable to believe Mimo’s words.

It was already two in the morning? How many hours had passed from the time she vanished from the flight?

"Mimo... this can’t do..." shaking her head, Leslie wrinkled her brows, "I want to... tell him that... I’m fine..."

Leslie remembered what Charlene said to her before. It seemed like Calix was anxiously looking for her after her sudden disappearance. She couldn’t imagine how tense he had been in the past few hours.

"I think... the nurse... should be... outside..."

Because the business trip was long, Calix asked the private nurses to stay the night unlike usual. They would take turns taking care of Charlene’s body. Aunt Wendy arranged for them to stay in the vacant room next door.

The nurses would check on Charlene according to their schedules. Seeing that she was alone in this room, they might be outside. Leslie didn’t know which one was on duty tonight.

"I need... to contact him... somehow..."

Leslie recalled Calix often making calls through the Wi-Fi connection. She believed the nurses or Aunt Wendy could reach Calix.

Pushing her frail body to move, Leslie slowly scooted closer to the edge. Her heart pounded loudly against her chest. She couldn’t stand waiting for three more hours.

’How is he now? I really want to tell him that I’m fine.’

Leslie was not sure how nervous Calix was after her disappearance. But, if she was in his shoes, she could never stand still.

How could she not? Looking for someone invisible to other people was close to impossible. They might think she was crazy.

"A-argh!"

Leslie cried out in pain. She accidentally rolled down the bed, falling on the floor when she tried to stand up. Ache flared from her lower limbs, spreading entirely to her weakened body.

Leslie! Be careful! You’ve just woken up! Please, don’t rush yourself. He will arrive home soon!

Mimo came flying from the bed, landing on Leslie’s back. The fox toy moved one of its stubby hands as if trying to comfort her. Its childlike voice was imbued with concern.

"I’m fine... I just..."

Unnoticed by Leslie, the door was opened from the outside. A middle-aged woman in a nurse uniform appeared at the doorway. The latter froze once her eyes saw Leslie lying on the floor.

"Mrs. Xu! Oh! You’re awake!"

"...huh? Ah!"

The nurse switched on the lights, instantly chasing the darkness away. Leslie instinctively closed her eyes, unable to stand the sudden brightness.

Ah... her eyes felt more sensitive than usual. Was it a side effect of being in a coma?

"Mrs. Xu... Oh! Thank goodness!" the private nurse on duty, Mrs. An murmured in relief, "Here, let me help you back to your bed. Mrs. Xu, I’m a nurse hired by your husband."

"Ah... yes..."

"You fell. Let me check your body, Mrs. Xu. What if you bleed somewhere?"

"...okay. They hurt... a little."

In the chaotic moment, Leslie simply let Mrs. An assist her. The experienced private nurse carefully helped her to the bed.

Once Leslie sat down, Mrs. An checked her legs. Both of her kneecaps had traces of redness. She kept her eyes closed, still couldn’t bear the light.

"Mrs. Xu, I’m so happy for you," Mrs. An kept muttering her gratitude. She examined Leslie’s arms next, "I’ve been checking on you more frequently than usual. Mr. Xu suddenly ordered me that."

Finding Mrs. An’s words slightly weird, Leslie asked, "Calix... what did... my... husband tell you?"

Did Calix really instruct Mrs. An to pay closer attention to her?

When did he contact the private nurse to give the order?

Mrs. An shifted her eyes from Leslie’s left arm. Smiling, she said, "Mr. Xu contacted me earlier. He told me to keep watch on you. He said you might wake up soon. Still, he sounds so worried."

Blinking her eyes, Leslie was robbed of her speech. Tremors spread from her heart, manifested by her shivering body.

"Mrs. An... please... contact him for me..."

She had to talk to him now!
