Chapter 144: Welcome Back to Both of Us
Chapter 144: Welcome Back to Both of Us
Calix landed at Silvercrest City when the skyline had faint hues of amber, violet and ruby colors. The sun would begin to ascend soon. Most of the city was still asleep, attributing to the weekend days.
Uncle Raymond came to pick Calix up from the airport. The middle-aged man welcomed him back before congratulating Calix for Leslie’s recovery.
"Mr. Calix, you should freshen up before going to the hospital this morning," said Uncle Raymond, looking at Calix through the rearview mirror, "Mrs. An said that Mrs. Charlene isn’t in any critical condition. Aren’t you tired? You were on a long flight."
Calix notified Uncle Raymond to drive him and Leslie to the hospital at eight. He wanted her to have thorough checkups there. Dr. Mo—Leslie’s doctor—was already informed about it.
"I’m fine, Uncle Raymond," replied Calix with a faint smile, "I’ve got some shut eye in the flight. I want my wife to be examined quickly."
The sooner it was done, the better.
"We were so surprised ah," Uncle Raymond chuckled in helplessness, referring to him and his wife, "We couldn’t believe that Mrs. Charlene had woken up. This is good! A very good thing!"
Uncle Raymond’s happy voice had a tinge of relief, softening Calix’s smile as he heard the older man talking. The car continued moving smoothly on the non-busy expressways.
"I think her condition should be better than mine before," expressed Calix sincerely, "My wife regained consciousness after three months, earlier than me. She also didn’t have broken limbs like me."
Throwing his gaze out of the window, Calix stared at the skyscrapers of the city. His solemn look was reflected on the glass panel. The lights of the passing streetlamps ricocheted onto his countenance.
"I heard my wife and Mrs. An talking," said Uncle Raymond quietly, recalling the moment before he stepped out of the house to head to the airport, "The nurse said the same thing too. If it’s true, Mrs. Charlene is very blessed!"
Drowning in the deep pool of his thoughts, Calix replied nothing. He absentmindedly rubbed his right thumb on his right index finger. Despite feeling less anxious than a few hours ago, his heart still trembled with lingering fear.
"Mr. Calix, welcome home."
Aunt Wendy greeted Calix right after he entered the manor. A relieved smile was curled on her lips. She was still in her cotton nightgown, covered with a long cardigan.
"Aunt Wendy, is my wife still sleeping?" Calix kicked off his shoes, changing into his pair of home slippers. Taking off his coat, he passed it to Aunt Wendy, "How about the nurse?"
"Mrs. Charlene is sleeping. Mrs. An is with her," responded Aunt Wendy swiftly, sensing the urgency in Calix’s voice, "I’ll prepare some light food for you, Mr. Calix."
"Thanks."
Calix hurried to the second floor, not paying attention to Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond behind anymore. He took larger strides, wanting to reach Leslie’s bedroom as soon as possible.
"Mrs. An."
Calix saw Mrs. An sitting by Leslie’s bedside as soon as he entered the room. The orange light from the table lamp cast a faint glow on the objects. The private nurse didn’t switch on the main lights.
"Good morning, Mr. Xu," Mrs. An gave Calix a polite nod once after rising from the chair. Her mild expression showed nothing was amiss.
"How’s my wife? Has she been sleeping since our last call? Is there anything you’ve just noticed about her, Mrs. An?"
Calix only stopped walking once he got to the bedside. Frowning, he stared at the sleeping Leslie. He unconsciously balled his hands into fists, refraining from reaching out to her yet.
"Mrs. Xu was awake twice since then, Mr. Xu," reported Mrs. An, recognizing how nervous the young man actually was, "She asked whether you’ve arrived or not."
"...she did?"
Calix pursed his lips as he continued looking at Leslie. The sight of her pale countenance reminded him of the times headaches suddenly assaulted her on the flight.
This time... she had really regained consciousness. This was not a dream nor a play.
Her wandering soul was finally bound back to her body, allowing her to live her life again.
"Explain to me about my wife’s condition again," instructed Calix without looking away from Leslie, "Don’t leave anything behind."
Even though Calix had heard Mrs. An’s report a few times now, uneasiness still weighed his heart. He would also inquire about the same from Dr. Mo during their hospital visit this morning.
"Understand, Mr. Xu."
Mrs. An didn’t point out that Calix had asked the same thing many times already. She began her explanation, mostly bringing up the matters she reported to Calix earlier. From time to time, she added new things.
"Mrs. An, you’re experienced in taking care of patients like my wife. How long will she take to function normally?"
Calix guessed that Leslie wouldn’t take long to recover fully but, he still wanted to hear it from Mrs. An. He also would ask the same from Dr. Mo later.
Mrs. An had expected such a question from Calix. This was common coming from the family member of the patient.
"The rough estimation is three months, Mr. Xu. Fortunately, Mrs. Xu doesn’t have other heavy injuries. But, we still need to take everything into account."
Calix quietly listened to Mrs. An. He let those words sink into his mind before coming up with more questions.
"I believe the rehab plan will be tailored according to my wife’s needs, isn’t it?" Calix was reminded of his own recovery six years ago.
Mrs. An nodded. She slowly finished saying her piece, "Dr. Mo will consult with other specialists before deciding on that. The frequency of the treatment sessions, what kind of training she needs, everything."
Calix vaguely nodded his head. Waving one hand, he told Mrs. An to step out of the room.
"I’ll look after my wife. Mrs. An, you were busy last night. You should get some rest."
"Thank you, Mr. Xu."
Mrs. An quietly walked out of the bedroom, allowing the anxious husband to be with his sleeping wife. The door was closed with a gentle thud.
Exhaling a sigh, Calix sat on the edge of the bed, keeping his eyes on Leslie. The murkiness of his gaze faded slightly. Hesitating, he slowly reached out for her left hand.
’She feels... real. Alive.’
Calix recalled the entire month of him being accompanied by Leslie’s soul. Even though she looked normal despite being in her spirit form, he couldn’t deny that she still exuded a dreamlike vibe sometimes.
The hand under his palm was warmer than usual, enticing Calix to soften his smile.
From now on, he could openly bring her to beautiful places, the ones she would surely love.
From now on, she could openly enjoy the beauty of the world, something she loved doing all this time.
Perhaps, they could dance under the moonlight once again.
"Leslie... please recover well. Let’s go boating again. Traveling and dancing too. And... let’s do more things together."
Calix’s voice was a whisper in the tranquility of the room. He gently rubbed the side of Leslie’s hand with a thumb.
To others, he chose her as his bride because of her comatose state. No one knew more reasons were lying underneath.
"...?! Leslie?"
Calix unconsciously cried out. Widening his eyes, the view of Leslie stirring awake was reflected in his pupils.
"Calix..." whispered a drowsy Leslie, her unfocused gaze staring back at him, "You’re... back..."
"I’m back," Calix grinned. He gently patted the back of Leslie’s hand, "And... you too. Welcome back."
A faint smile curved on Leslie’s lips.
