Chapter 141: The Price She Had to Pay
Charlene’s soft laughter drifted by Leslie’s ears. Hiccuping, she willed herself to stop crying. She didn’t want to end their last meeting with tears.
"No matter where you go, I’ll always pray for your happiness," whispered Leslie, trying to convey the sincerity stemming from her heart.
They were practically strangers but, Leslie couldn’t help but think of Charlene as her own sister. Despite not being able to get to know her better, Leslie earnestly wished the best for her.
"Thank you," chuckling, Charlene slowly pulled away from Leslie. Her hands remained on the latter’s shoulders, "Let’s make good use of our second chance in lives, en?"
"Yes," Leslie nodded, rubbing the tears glistening on her face, "Charlene, farewell. I think I need to go back now."
"Hehe, you should. Someone is frantically looking for you."
"Oh... yeah."
Leslie couldn’t imagine how terrified Calix was. He witnessed her disappearing. If she didn’t return now, that man might go crazy ah.
Or not.
Amused by her own thoughts, Leslie inwardly shook her head.
Charlene let go of Leslie’s shoulders, rising to her feet. Extending a hand, she helped the latter to stand up.
"I wish you well, Leslie," Charlene grasped both of Leslie’s hands, "Remember, don’t feel guilty."
"I will do my best," Leslie nodded, her eyes beaming with joy, "I believe both of us will live well. Charlene, goodbye."
"Yes, farewell, Leslie."
Charlene released Leslie’s hands. Before she turned around, she waved at the latter and received the same gesture.
Standing by the river, Leslie quietly watched Charlene walk away. A shimmering glow enveloped her body as if she would vanish into the air.
"Oh, I forgot."
Charlene’s exclamation piqued Leslie’s interest. The former slightly tilted her head, staring at her with a helpless smile.
"Charlene, do you have something else to say?"
"I do," Charlene nodded. A chuckle slipped out of her mouth, "Leslie, when one day he apologizes to you for what happened years ago, please forgive him on my behalf."
"...he? Do you mean Calix?" Leslie asked cautiously, wondering if she heard Charlene wrong, "Did he wrong you somehow? Is it because of the sudden marriage?"
When Charlene said it like that, Leslie was immediately reminded of the way Calix tricked Rowan into allowing him to marry his eldest daughter.
But...
Charlene mentioned the thing occurred years ago.
Did both of them meet before?
Charlene shook her head, denying Leslie’s claim. With a smile still hanging on her lips, she replied mysteriously, "You’ll know someday. It’ll come to light."
Leslie was unable to say anything. It seemed like Charlene was adamant about not revealing her past with Calix.
"Alright, I’ll do that," Leslie agreed without asking anymore, "If he brings it up someday and apologizes, I’ll relay your forgiveness to him. I’ll pardon him on your behalf."
The firmness in Leslie’s voice cast a relief smile on Charlene’s lips. Once again she waved at the former, resuming her steps.
Leslie pursed her lips. She couldn’t help but think about Charlene’s new request.
"...eh?"
Her eyes widened, Leslie saw flickering lights flocking to Charlene’s right side before they materialized into something.
A small figure in a dress—a young girl—reached for Charlene’s right hand. Without looking back at the stunned Leslie, she bent down to carry the little one.
"Leslie, farewell."
Charlene’s voice was carried by the breeze, reaching Leslie whose eyes still enlarged in shock.
In the next second, both Charlene and the little girl in her arms disappeared into balls of lights, leaving Leslie alone in the enchanting grassland.
That girl...
Was she...
"Argh!"
Before Leslie could finish her train of thought, another splitting headache seared through her mind. Slowly losing consciousness, her body tilting down, falling.
The glistening sunlight and the emerald grassland bore witness to her vanishing into twinkling lights.
**********
"Haa..."
When Leslie opened her eyes again, she found herself staring at a familiar place. Despite being surrounded by dimness, she could tell where she was by heart.
This was Calix’s private residence, Graceville Manor! She was lying on the bed inside her bedroom, the one occupied by Charlene’s unconscious body.
’Does this mean... I’m really Charlene now?’
Leslie weakly moved her fingers, brushing the bedsheet underneath. The fabric felt soft to the touch. She pushed her hand further into the mattress, trying to move it past the solid object but, it was a futile attempt.
’Yes. I’m Charlene now.’
Blinking her eyes, Leslie recalled her last meeting with Charlene. Warmth and relief flooded her heart as she remembered the look of sincere joy on the latter’s countenance.
’Charlene, thank you for giving me this chance. I’ll live my second life well.’
Myriads of emotions swept Leslie’s heart. She had been waiting for this moment for so long. When it finally came, she was shrouded in both bewilderment and joy.
Following her full possession of Charlene’s body, Leslie understood that there was no turning back. From now on, her identity was Charlene Li.
’It’s okay. Everything has a price and this is what I’ve to pay. We can’t have everything go our way.’
By discarding her original identity, Leslie was able to live once again. She also could fulfill her dream of reuniting with her daughter.
After soothing the overwhelming emotions, Leslie began to move. A groan escaped her lips as she tried forcing herself to roll to one side.
Leslie could feel how frail this body was, perhaps due to being in a coma for over three months. Still, she hoped that it wouldn’t be as bad as what she had been imagining.
Despite still being able to move, Leslie’s speed was significantly slower than usual. In her attempt to sit up, she began calling a name.
"Mimo... Mimo, can you... hear me?" called Leslie, her voice sounding so husky. Distress laced in her intonation.
Leslie still remembered how dreadful she was when Mimo didn’t respond to her telepathy call. The crochet fox toy also didn’t appear when she was talking to Charlene earlier.
Did this mean Mimo also had ceased to exist?
No! It couldn’t be!
