Chapter 140: Their Last Farewell
Feeling the grass tips brushing her feet, Leslie threw her gaze to her surroundings. Her almond eyes took in everything presented in front of her.
All Leslie could see was an emerald sea of vast grassland with rolling hills stretching out far.
Blooms of wildflowers carpeted the ground, adding splashes of colors. The crisp air was infused with the scent of the dancing wildflowers, its fragrance swirled to the tip of her nose.
’Where am I?’
The question lingered in Leslie’s mind from the first moment she found herself here. Standing barefoot on the ground, the breeze gently tousled her long hair, her skirt billowed around her.
’Why am I here? Is this the afterlife? Calix... what he’s doing now? Is he looking for me?’
Leslie still remembered how terrified Calix looked as her soul disintegrated in front of him. She had never seen such terror expressed by him before.
At first, dread and anxiousness took over her heart. But, the tranquility offered by this unfamiliar grassland loosened the claws of fear from her heart.
Another question rose in Leslie’s mind. She was certain she wasn’t brought here by mistake. There must be something going on.
Turning around, Leslie’s eyes drifted to where her ears picked up the echoes of gentle lapping of water. It was a creek.
Staring at the winding stream of water, Leslie slowly made her way there. Her feet touched the grass with each step.
Mirroring the azure sky above, Leslie saw twinkles dancing on the clear stream. Once she reached there, she kneeled by the river bank before craning her neck to look into the water.
’This... is my face.’
For some reason, Leslie thought she would see Charlene’s face reflected on the water instead of her own. Thankfully, it was not.
Pulling her torso away from the water, Leslie hugged her legs close. In the midst of the melodious song of nature, her ears caught another sound.
The soft echo of someone’s footsteps.
Parting her lips, Leslie spoke without looking away from the river, "Charlene, are you here to see me?"
A chuckle resonated from behind, reaching Leslie. After a moment, someone—Charlene—lowered her body to sit next to her.
Leslie lowered her knees. Withdrawing her gaze from the river, her eyes fell on the woman she had been masquerading as in front of Calix.
Leslie found something was different in Charlene’s countenance.
Despite having only met Charlene once before she transmigrated to the book world, Leslie still remembered the anguished look on the latter’s face. Even the tone of her voice carried her despair.
But, now...
Charlene’s smile appeared so sincere, her eyes glowing with a hint of happiness.
"Were you surprised? I’m sorry for suddenly bringing you here."
Charlene’s apology was met with helpless laughter from Leslie.
"Is this the afterlife? I was scared, you know?" smiling faintly, Leslie’s brows softened, "I couldn’t call Mimo. And I... disappeared in front of him."
Charlene smiled apologetically at Leslie, "I’m sorry. I want to meet you for the last time."
"...what?" Leslie was stunned, her eyes slightly widening, "To meet me for the last time? You... are you going forever now?"
"Yes. We won’t meet again," Charlene nodded. Her countenance carried no hint of sadness as she admitted to her leaving for eternity.
Leslie parted her lips, wanting to say something but, no words flowed out of her mouth. Charlene simply chuckled at the sight of her astonished look.
"Before I go, I want to thank you properly," Charlene gently touched the back of Leslie’s right hand, "You’ve done well for me, Leslie. You caught the perpetrator behind my accident and retrieved my precious pendant."
"B-but..." Leslie shook her head, frowning, "I haven’t fulfilled all of your wishes. Charlene, I’m sorry. I can’t remember the second thing you want me to find. Can you please tell me again?"
Even though this would be their last meeting, Leslie still wanted to realize Charlene’s second wish. But, no matter how much she tried to remember it, none came to her mind.
Fortunately, Charlene reappeared. Leslie quickly grabbed this chance to ask for it. She had to make sure she wouldn’t forget it again.
Yet, Charlene’s answer was out of Leslie’s expectations.
"You’ll eventually find it, Leslie. You will find it alongside your own precious treasure."
"But..."
Charlene clasped Leslie’s hands, locking her serene gaze on the latter’s bewildered one.
"What I want to say is, please don’t be guilty. I know it’s hard to live as someone else but, I hope that you’ll enjoy your second chance at life. Introduce yourself as Leslie if you want. Don’t be chained down by my name."
Leslie blinked, sensing heat rushing to her eyes, followed by unshed tears. Charlene’s words gently grazed her heart, reminding her of her purpose of coming here.
"Have you been watching... the entire time?" Leslie carefully brought up the subject, "Your sister, Irene is so sweet. She really worries about your well-being."
"I did," Charlene nodded, her eyes glinting with a warm light at the mention of her only sister, "Please look after her for me, Leslie. As for my parents... it’s late but, I’m glad to see their changes."
Leslie pursed her lips, unable to say anything. She fully understood what Charlene meant.
Even though Charlene would disappear forever, at least she got a form of closure regarding her family’s situation. It might not be enough to ease her lifelong suffering but, it was better than nothing at all.
"Do you want me... to forgive them on your behalf?"
Leslie’s quiet voice reached Charlene, prompting her to smile sadly.
"The truth is... I’m not sure. Perhaps, when you feel they’ve changed enough?"
Leslie bit her lower lip, nodding once. She was aware that Charlene couldn’t find it in her heart to forgive her parents for their mistreatment and neglect all this time.
"T-then... where are you going now?" Leslie stuttered, desperately wanting to know where Charlene’s next destination was, "Will you be happy? Please, I hope you’ll achieve it too, not just me."
"Hehe, I will," Charlene let go of Leslie’s hands, extending her arms to hug the latter, "I will head to another place. I’m sure I’ll attain what I couldn’t in this life. So, I want you to do the same, Leslie."
"Y-yes... both of us... let’s be happy," Leslie returned Charlene’s hug, clear droplets of tears streaming down her cheeks, "Thank you, thank you so much, Charlene. I will live well, I will!"
That was her promise!
