Chapter 136: Dancing Barefoot Under the Moonlight
Flustered, Leslie quietly made her way downstairs until she reached the first floor. Standing opposite Calix, she smiled awkwardly. His countenance beamed in joy, expressing his delight for tonight’s plan.
"You’re a perfect match with this dress," Calix tapped his chin, once again praising Leslie, "I wanted to get something pink for you but, this one caught my eyes."
"Oh... I love it," Leslie’s lips melted into a smile, her heart pounding with excitement, "I didn’t expect to get another dress from you though. Thank you."
Calix grinned, soft chuckles slipping out of his mouth. He eyed Leslie from head to toe, noticing how lovely she looked with her cheeks blushing.
"It’s a gift from your husband. I’m glad to hear that," Calix raised one hand, presenting his palm to Leslie, "May I lead you to the yard, my lady?"
Leslie blinked, her heart skipped a beat before ramming hard against her chest.
This... why did she sense something different from the way he acted?
"It’s my pleasure," Leslie softened her smile, telling herself to enjoy the moment. She placed her hand on Calix’s, "Please guide me there, Mr. Xu."
Calix chuckled, raising his brows, "Prepare yourself to be in awe again."
Shaking her head in helplessness, Leslie laughed softly. She followed Calix as he led her out of the villa, heading to the backyard.
"Oh... are there lights twinkling there?" Leslie pointed to the forest, glancing at Calix, "Are we going there?"
"Yes," Calix deepened his smile, "I think you can already guess, Mrs. Xu."
Her heart soaring in joy, Leslie pursed her lips tight. Her eyes widened in delight once she fully saw the lights that piqued her attention earlier.
Lights in the shape of small butterflies lined the pathway leading deeper into the forest. Their gentle glow illuminated the pathway Leslie often used to go to the lake. The image itself enchanted her.
"Oh! Oh! Wow~ That’s so pretty!"
Praise flowed out of Leslie’s mouth once she and Calix arrived at the clearing before the lake. She was amazed by how the wooden deck was decorated.
Strings of fairy lights climbed the pavilions’ pillars and lattice roofs, casting an alluring glow across the deck. Candles flickered in glass jars, lining the edge of the deck. Their soft light was reflected on the water.
Leslie saw one round table standing in the pavilion on the right side of the deck. A small vase of fresh flowers and a jar of candles adorned the middle. Seemed like the candlelight dinner would take place there.
"Hehe, how is it?" Calix kept his gaze on Leslie’s awestruck look, his eyes brimming with affection he had yet to realize, "Is it better than your imagination? Or whatever surprise I have in store tonight?"
"It is!" exclaimed Leslie, abruptly looking at Calix, "It’s much much much better!"
Calix’s smile mellowed. He found himself enchanted by the light glimmering in Leslie’s eyes.
"Come. Let’s have our dinner first."
"Hehe, okay~"
Climbing the deck, Calix let Leslie’s hand go. He pulled out a chair, gesturing at her to sit. Once she did so, he walked to the side table where two big chaffing dishes stood. He brought out plates from them.
"Our dinner is still warm," Calix served the plates on the table, grinning at Leslie softly, "I want to do another thing with you so, I don’t make it three-course."
"How convenient."
Leslie was amused. She looked at the grilled chicken breast covered in sauce. Picking up the scents of tomato and thyme, she recognized chili flakes and slices of tomatoes in the dish.
"Have the other dishes too," Calix pointed to the other plates, "Of course, I won’t forget our wine and desserts."
"The smell is so tempting. Can we dig in now, Mr. Xu?" Leslie grabbed the fork and knife, "Please don’t mind my poor table manners."
"Hah! Just eat it. We’re not in fine dining."
Under Calix’s encouragement, Leslie started slicing the chicken breast. The young man also did the same.
While savoring each bite of their meal, Leslie and Calix shared conversations. The echoes of their chatter and laughter harmonized with the rustle of the leaves.
As they were enjoying their time, none of them noticed how long it had been. Leslie and Calix were finishing their desserts and the last drop of wine when the candle burned low.
"You’re not drunk, aren’t you?" teased Calix when Leslie started singing out of nowhere, "You didn’t drink much."
"I’m not drunk," Leslie glared at Calix, pointing the dessert fork at him, "Watch your mouth unless you want me to poke this on you."
"Seems like you need some fresh air ah."
Calix scoffed. Putting down his own fork, he rose to his feet before rounding the table to reach Leslie. Extending a hand to Leslie, his words stunned her.
"So, Mrs. Xu, how about a dance with me?"
Blinking, Leslie thought her mild drunkenness caused her to mishear things. But, the image of Calix smiling tenderly with the full moon shining against his back appeared so vivid in her eyes.
Why did he look so dreamy right now?
"W-well... I’m not much of a dancer," flustered, Leslie looked at Calix nervously, "What if I step on your foot?"
"We can simply dance, no need to feel too formal," Calix’s countenance brightened as he laughed, "We can’t really do this once we’re back. How about just enjoying this moment?"
Leslie’s mind wandered to Graceville Manor for a moment. After a short pondering, she nodded.
Calix’s grin grew wider, "Let’s dance barefoot, my lady."
"Sounds good," Leslie chuckled.
Placing her palm on Calix’s hand, Leslie stood up from her seat. Both of them kicked off their shoes before he led her to the middle section of the wooden deck.
"Wait, let me start the music."
Calix took out a remote controller the size of his thumb from the pocket of his suit. With one click, strings of soft music resonated, blending with the echoes of the water lapping and the leaves rustling.
"Mr. Xu, you’re well prepared," Leslie let out a chuckle, beaming at the thought of dancing under the moonlight.
"Of course," Calix smirked, smiling pridefully, "Just follow my lead, Mrs. Xu. Oh, excuse me."
Leslie flinched when Calix placed one hand at the curve of her waist. Her cheeks flushing, she began moving once he began the dance.
"Enjoy the moment," Calix spoke, his voice was a gentle whisper, "Don’t think of anything troublesome. You’ll feel the magic soon."
"Hehe, what kind of magic?" Leslie let out a peal of a giggle, "The one that disappears once midnight strikes?"
"We can keep the magic going," replied Calix, twirling Leslie with one hand, her dress billowing out around her, "The pumpkin carriage won’t break down, the magic continues."
"Hahaha!"
Leslie couldn’t believe how fluid her movements were as she followed Calix’s lead. Her eyes shyly looked into his, finding how tender the curve of his lips was.
The soothing music, the gentle murmur of the river, the fondness in his gaze and smile as they danced, everything touched a part of her heart.
Sensing her heart thumping more than usual, one thought struck Leslie’s mind when Calix tugged her closer, their eyes colliding.
’This man... how easy will it be to fall in love with him?’
