Chapter 135: A Piece of Hazy Memory From the Past
The anniversary banquet ended without any hiccups. After bidding farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Nucci, Calix returned to the villa. Mr. Hao and Mr. Tan joined him in the black limousine.
"No one can disturb me tomorrow night," letting out a sigh, Calix loosened his navy blue tie, "I want to enjoy my last night here."
Mr. Tan glanced at Calix from the opposite seat, "Even if the company is on fire? Or an apocalypse happens?"
"Call Edward to deal with any disaster," Calix closed his eyes, feeling how strained they were from the blinding chandelier lights in the ballroom, "He should do more before going on a long vacation."
"Understand, Boss," Mr. Hao grinned, mirth dancing in his eyes, "We’ll harass Chief Assistant Zhang if needed."
Calix scoffed, snickering. Both Mr. Hao and Mr. Tan possessed the same sarcastic humor as Edward despite being older than the latter. His chief assistant was indeed a bad influence on his subordinates.
The ride back from the Nucci spouses’ mansion to the villa took half an hour. Calix kept his eyes closed, his mind drifting to his plan for tomorrow night – for their last night here.
’It’ll be perfect, isn’t it?’
Calix got the idea once he discovered Leslie’s infatuation with one area in the private villa. Aside from feeling bad for her because she couldn’t be like other tourists, he also wanted to give a memorable experience to her.
’I’m going crazy, really. I don’t have to go to such lengths ah.’
Even though Calix only knew Leslie for almost one month and despite her current mystical state, he found her very pleasant.
It was just...
’But... why do I think she’s different than my old memory? Is it because I didn’t remember much?’
Frowning, Calix recalled a piece of hazy memory from years ago – from the time before he started feeling awkward with his own body as if it belonged to someone else.
Her smiling yet teary face. His muddled yet drowned in passion mind.
Crumpling bedsheet under their tangling legs. Love marks he left on her slender frame. The horrifying realization that came afterward.
And...
SCREECH!
BANG!
Calix winced when the unpleasant noises of tires skidding and glass shattering busted his train of thought. Cold sweat instantly broke on his back.
’No, no. Stop thinking about it. Just... stop.’
Calix clasped his hands together, feeling how his heart shivered. He quickly redirected his mind to his surprise plan for Leslie tomorrow night.
’After sunset... yes. Everything will be ready by that.’
Slowly Calix’s lips curled up, pushing the nightmare to the back of his mind. For now, he refused to entertain such negative thoughts.
Everything was bound to be answered someday.
**********
"I can return now, right? It’s already seven."
Looking up from a bench in the public park, Leslie stared at the clock tower in the middle of a fountain. The sun was still hanging above the horizon. It wouldn’t set yet until later.
Tilting her head, Leslie recalled what Calix told her before going to work this morning. He seemed so serious about it that he reminded her thrice.
"I want to surprise you with something but, can you go out at four? Don’t return until seven. No peeking or wandering around the yard either. Come straight to your room once you’re back."
Calix’s frankness about his plan amused Leslie. She was intrigued to know what kind of preparations he would do but, she was reluctant to ruin the surprise.
"Okay. I’ll do that."
Once Leslie promised that, Calix openly let out a sigh of relief. She could only smile in helplessness at how CEO Xu was acting.
Thus, Leslie went out once the clock struck four. She simply went to the market square before stopping at the public park. Watching the locals mingle entertained her.
Leslie still remembered how good Calix’s previous surprises during their night tour were. She couldn’t help but wonder what else the man wanted to do.
Calix said he wanted to commemorate their last night here before flying back tomorrow. They should head back around nine in the morning Italy time. They might arrive back in the country at five in the morning.
"Hum... let’s return now."
Unable to contain her excitement, Leslie hovered in the air instead of walking. She also sped up more than usual. In no time, she reached the private villa.
Everything looked normal to Leslie. Recalling Calix’s other instruction to go straight to her room, she rushed to the inside of the villa.
"Oh! You’re back already."
Leslie was slightly surprised to see Calix sitting in the lounge. He already changed his business wear to casual clothes.
"Seven-fifteen," Calix glanced at the clock, grinning at Leslie, "Not bad. Go upstairs ah. I’ve prepared something for you. Come down at eight."
"Are we going out?" Leslie tried getting some hints from Calix.
"Only to the yard, but," Calix’s smile expressed his sheer confidence, "I’m one hundred percent sure you’ll love it."
"Hehe, what will you do if I don’t love it?" asked Leslie teasingly.
Calix grinned, "No, you’ll love it."
Leslie laughed again, entertained by Calix’s high level of faith in himself.
"Okay~ I’ll come down before eight."
Leslie shrugged, wondering what did Calix prepare for her upstairs. Without talking much anymore, she immediately went to her room.
What Leslie saw stunned her.
"A dress? A new one? When did he get this?"
An off-shoulder dress in an ombre gray color was lying on the bed. The chiffon sleeves were short and might only cover until the elbows. Touching the fabric, Leslie could tell it was high in quality.
"Hey, don’t tell me he’s planning a candlelight dinner?"
Amused by her own thoughts, Leslie chuckled. In her opinion, CEO Xu was quite a romantic man. No matter what kind of surprise was waiting for her, she couldn’t wait to witness it.
Leslie took a quick shower despite having no need for it. The dress was a perfect fit for her, the hem billowed out gracefully around her calves.
Letting her hair cascade behind her shoulders, Leslie simply brushed it twice. The tips of her luscious locks fell below her hip.
"It’ll be great if I can use a mirror," Leslie let out a shine, cupping her face with both hands, "I can’t even tell whether I look good or not."
Patting her face a few times, Leslie told herself to cheer up. She looked at the clock. The needles pointed to seven-fifty in the evening.
"Should I wait until eight? Or, it’s better if I go down now?"
After battling with her inner self, Leslie decided to head downstairs. She could no longer stay still in the bedroom.
"Mrs. Xu, you’re right on time."
Calix’s mellow voice had a hint of a smile, startling Leslie who had just appeared at the stairs. Looking down, she saw the man standing opposite the staircase as if he had been waiting for her.
"...Calix?"
Flashing a bright smile, Calix whistled, "Wow~ You look so good in that dress! As expected of my taste ah!"
Leslie blinked, continuing to stare at Calix.
CEO Xu wore a dark gray suit tonight but, in a less formal style. He didn’t button the top two buttons of his white shirt, slightly revealing the base of his neck and clavicle.
En... did he realize how seductive he appeared right now?
