Chapter 137: The Magic Would Eventually End

This was actually not Leslie’s first time dancing barefoot under the moonlight. She often did it with Axel before, initiated by him.

But, the setting was not too grand. Usually, they danced either in the public park or in the living room of their small apartment.

Losing themselves in the magic of the moment, they danced and laughed together, letting the moon and the stars be the witness of their ardent love.

Years passed after her last dance with her first lover. Never did she think to experience it again even though her partner was another gentleman.

Entranced by Calix’s fond gaze, Leslie’s heart whispered to her mind.

’This man... how easy will it be to fall in love with him?’

Blinking, Leslie was surprised to find herself thinking of that. She quickly pulled herself back together, forcing herself to focus on the dance.

But...

For some reason, she became more conscious of his palm on her waist and his hands gently touching hers. The warm sensation seeped under her skin, flaring out to her entire body.

"Thinking of something, Leslie?" asked Calix, followed by a chuckle. He twirled Leslie, letting go of her waist before holding her again, "Why? Feeling the magic?"

Calix’s questions brought nervous laughter out of Leslie’s mouth, racking her brain to find excuses.

"This place is so pretty. I’ll miss it once we’re back," Leslie stared at Calix, jokingly saying, "If only your lake had this kind of deck and pavilions, Mr. Xu. I’ll surely go there every day."

Calix’s eyes glinted as he pulled Leslie toward him, "Oh? What’s an interesting thought."

Leslie chuckled softly. Her heart soared with joy, more melodious laughter slipped out of her mouth.

Eventually, the music came to a stop, only leaving the echoes of nature behind.

"Are you tired?" Calix slowly let go of Leslie’s waist and hand, "Sit by the river. I’ll get us some drinks."

"Thanks," Leslie nodded, her cheeks still pinkening – not caused by the dance but, by the man.

Moving away from Calix, Leslie sat on the deck. Looking down, her eyes were locked onto the surface of the river, charmed by the reflection of the moon.

’Why do I think the moon looks bigger somehow?’

Chuckling, Leslie clasped her hands together before raising her arms. She groaned as she felt her muscles taut. Her eyes wandered from the night sky to the moon.

Needless to say, Calix’s surprise tonight flooded Leslie’s heart with unfounded joy. She loved how mystically beautiful her surroundings had become.

The bright moonlight, the strings of fairy lights and the flickering candles cast radiance across the deck, illuminating the dark forest at night.

Calix returned shortly with two bottles of mineral water. Once he sat next to Leslie, he uncapped one bottle before handing it to her.

"Thanks."

Leslie gulped down the water, moistening her parched throat. Calix did the same.

"How many points will I get for tonight’s surprise, Mrs. Xu?" Calix raised his brows while staring at Leslie, snickering mischievously, "Is it higher than the ones at our night tour before?"

Calix’s questions prompted Leslie to laugh. Tilting her head up, she returned his gaze, "Ten, the perfect score."

"Hahaha!"

Slumping down on the wooden deck, Calix lay flat, withdrawing his eyes from Leslie to the moon. His face was still beaming with a smile.

"I forgot to ask," Leslie glanced at Calix for a short moment, "When did you start setting all this up? Or, did you ask other people to use it?"

"Hehehe," Calix pretended to laugh eerily, "Yeah, I hired people to set this place up. They did it when I was cooking."

Leslie’s gaze softened, trying to imagine how busy Calix was in the kitchen. Surely he didn’t get much rest after returning to the villa. He needed to cook as soon as he arrived back from work.

"Haa... I don’t want to go back. I mean, I want to lazy around ah," sighed Calix out loud.

Shaking her head in helplessness, Leslie also lowered her body, lying on the deck. Without looking at Calix, she responded, "I think your assistant Edward is waiting for your return. You’ve left him for one week."

"Huh, he has warned me not to take a day off once I return," Calix clicked his tongue, recalling what Edward told him during their phone call today, "What a heartless assistant ah."

Leslie grinned, thinking of how often she saw Calix and Edward bantered. Instead of a boss and his employee, they seemed like two close brothers.

Calix and Leslie lay in silence, both of them throwing their eyes out to the night sky. The gentle breeze caressed their cheeks, sending the water lapping against the river bank.

Tonight was indeed full of magic yet, it would come to an end eventually as how Cinderella’s carriage reverted to a pumpkin at midnight.

"Let’s go back," Leslie sat up, gesturing at Calix to do the same, "Our flight is early tomorrow. You should get some sleep before that."

Calix was out and about since the early morning. Once he returned, he was busy with the last preparations for tonight’s surprise. Leslie guessed he didn’t get much rest today.

"En, let’s," Calix didn’t refuse. Propping on one hand, he rose from the wooden deck, "The driver will come to get us at eight."

"How about these decorations?" Leslie looked across the deck, finding that most candles had burned low, "Will someone come to clean this up tomorrow?"

"Yeah," Calix wore the shoes back, "I’ve informed Mrs. Rossi. She said some people would handle it. Come, let’s go back."

"Okay."

Calix and Leslie traced their steps back along the pathway lined with butterfly lights. None of them talked much anymore but, the ambiance around them was softer than before.

After bidding Calix good night, Leslie headed inside her room. He also wished her the same.

Instead of changing out of her dress first, Leslie threw herself on the bed. Blinking, she slowly recalled everything that happened earlier.

"Will I... end up falling in love with him?"

Leslie’s whisper verbalized what was causing chaos in her heart. An image of Calix smiling oh so tenderly at her was conjured in her mind.

Despite how annoying he could be, Calix was a good man. He possessed many outstanding qualities a woman usually looked for in a man.

Leslie was reminded of the tons of romance novels she had read before, the ones involving arranged marriages or marriages of convenience. All of them ended up with the female lead and the male professing their love.

"Will I be like that with him?"

It was too early to tell. Besides, she had a more important thing to take into consideration — her main goal of coming here.

Fiddling with her dress, Leslie murmured, "No matter what, I need to be truthful about Poppy with Calix later."

Her daughter Calliope’s soul transmigrated into the body of an orphan. Despite being in another body, the child was still Leslie’s precious daughter.

Once Leslie successfully relocated Calliope, she hoped to bring the child under her wings. If she wanted to be Calliope’s legal guardian in this world, she needed to adopt her own daughter.

But...

"Will Calix accept it?" Leslie frowned, worrying about the future events, "He will surely ask... why I want to adopt a child."

Maybe... just maybe, she needed to be frank about her real origin to him soon in the future.

Closing her eyes, Leslie didn’t notice how her body suddenly glowed, appearing translucent before it regained its previous clarity.
