Chapter 116: CEO Xu, Our Thoughts Are the Same
"...thank you. I will... I will look through this."
This was it... what she was dearly waiting for.
Ignoring Leslie’s shaky voice was hard, caused by her fear of disappointment. Even though she was waiting for the new compilation of information, she couldn’t deny that she was afraid.
What if... her Calliope’s information was not in there?
Could she endure another heartbreak?
Leslie tightened her grip on the file. She didn’t notice how intently Calix was looking at her. His towering figure cast shadows on her sitting posture on the bed.
Murky clouds loomed on Leslie’s countenance, tugging at Calix’s heart. He unconsciously frowned, taking in the dark look exuded by her. Her usual cheery self suddenly vanished once she saw the file.
"Leslie, how about I accompany you?"
Calix’s mellow voice softened further, expressing his concern for Leslie. The drastic change in her behavior rang alarm in his mind.
Until now, Calix kept his doubts about Leslie’s relationship with the girl named Calliope. He had a hunch that she hid a greater secret but, he couldn’t find it in his heart to ask her.
Perhaps, this secret would alter her course of life.
Calix’s voice imbued with worry reached Leslie. Blinking a few times, she forced herself to straighten her wavering composure. Taking her eyes off the file, she placed her gaze on the young man.
"I’ll be fine," Leslie put on a smile. Unaware of herself, the glint in her eyes was dimming, "You should continue your work. I’ll come out after looking through this, en?"
Calix pursed his lips. He pondered for a moment before reluctantly nodding. Leslie’s words failed to reassure him. It was clear that she wanted to be alone thus, he refused to shove his presence to her.
"...alright. Call me immediately if you need anything."
Leslie’s smile softened, "Thank you for your concern, Calix."
Calix nodded awkwardly, hesitation was expressed through his gaze. He gave Leslie one last look before walking out of the lounge. She watched him until the door was closed.
"Let’s start..."
Leslie shook her head, chasing her fear away. No matter what the result would be, she shouldn’t let uncertainty plague her heart.
Someday, she would reunite with her daughter!
That day would surely come!
After taking a deep breath to stabilize her mood, Leslie opened the first page. She didn’t call Mimo like before, believing in her ability to spot her daughter among the many Calliopes recorded in the file.
Silence blanketed the entire lounge. The only sounds that echoed inside were Leslie’s soft breathing and the gentle flipping of the papers.
On the TV screen, Evelyn’s movement was frozen. Leslie paused right when the Ice Goddess Xu fought with the actor who played the role of Sky God.
"The last one."
Leslie blinked, her eyes were glazed with unshed tears. Tremors outstretched to her fingertips as she leafed to the final page.
Another photo of an adorable little girl smiling at Leslie. Her soft features and round eyes gave off the naivety possessed by a child whose heart hadn’t been tainted by the corrupted world.
But...
With a shaky voice and downcast look, Leslie murmured sadly, "This is not Poppy."
Calliope was not in here. This was another failed attempt to locate her whereabouts.
Leslie slowly closed the file. Her blank gaze traced the matte surface of the thick plastic.
A turbulent wave of disappointment crashed against the shore of her heart. The light of her hope faded as more dark clouds surrounded it as if wanting to swallow it whole.
But!
She wouldn’t ever give up! This was still the beginning! Sooner or later, she would get her daughter back!
A fiery glint burned the murkiness in Leslie’s eyes. She patted her cheeks a few times, trying to cheer herself up.
"It’s okay. Who knows, the third time’s the charm?"
Despite still feeling unhappy, Leslie was not as affected as the first time. These failed attempts didn’t mean forever. Someday, surely her search bear sweet fruits.
"Oh, I need to tell Calix."
Leslie slid down the bed. Leaving the drama still on pause and the file on the bed, she walked through the solid door. The sight of CEO Xu focusing on his job greeted her.
"Calix."
Calix immediately withdrew his eyes from the documents on the table. Springing up, he straightened his posture before standing.
"Leslie, how was it?" asked Calix cautiously. He carefully eyed Leslie’s expression, trying to see whether she tried concealing her feelings or not.
Her eyes were red. Was it tears of happiness or disappointment?
Leslie stopped once she reached Calix’s work desk. With a smile, she gently shook her head.
"None. Can you please tell Edward to keep on searching? I’m sorry for troubling you and him."
Calix frowned, silently thinking that Leslie didn’t look as bad as before. Her intonation was stable, expressing the calmness of her heart.
"Don’t think that way. You’re not troubling any of us," Calix spoke firmly, trying to reassure Leslie, "We’ll find the girl. Don’t worry ah. The third time’s the charm, who knows?"
Edward had just started searching for the girl named Calliope. This huge country had thousands of orphanages. Locating one child needed time and effort.
Leslie blinked, staring at Calix in disbelief. His words inevitably tickled her heart. She quickly pressed her lips together, seemingly holding back from laughing.
"...what?" Calix raised his brows, "Why do you look like that?"
Did he say something funny?
He was just trying to coax her ah.
"Hehe, CEO Xu, our thoughts are the same," Leslie’s chuckles slipped out of her lips, her eyes curving as she laughed more, "The third time’s the charm."
"Oh, yeah?" Calix broke into a grin, smiling foolishly, "Hahaha! With two people wishing for that, I’m sure we’ll find the girl next time around. Keep on praying, okay?"
Leslie giggled, amused by the way Calix tried to lift her spirits, "Okay, I’ll do that."
Seeing her countenance regain its usual liveliness, Calix smiled in relief. He glanced at the remaining stacks of papers on his work desk.
"Give me half an hour. I just need to finish this. Then, we can go home."
"Alright. I’ll continue watching the drama."
Leslie returned to the lounge, leaving Calix to attend to his tasks. She didn’t hear him calling Edward right after she vanished into the private breakroom.
"Edward, keep looking for the girl. Expand the perimeter further."
"Yes, Boss Xu," Edward’s voice reverberated from the intercom speaker, "I’ll compile new information before your business trip ends."
"Good. Oh, contact Mr. Liang. I’ll go to Qindom Plaza in an hour. Tell him..."
Edward quietly listened to his boss’ instructions. Even though he thought they were weird, he said nothing about them.
"Okay. I’ll inform Mr. Liang right away."
"Thanks."
Calix ended the call. He didn’t know that Edward’s mind was brimming with questions. Returning his focus to his work, Calix picked up the ballpoint pen again.
Hopefully, she would cheer up more with what he had in store soon after they left the company.
