"W-what? Your grandma... wanted to accept them? The mistress and... that boy?"

Leslie’s eyes widened in disbelief, unable to immediately grasp that fact. Mouth parting in shock, the image of Old Madam Xu’s soft facial features resurfaced in her mind.

Even though Leslie hadn’t interacted directly with Old Madam Xu, she knew the elderly woman’s heart was made of gold. Perhaps, she felt sorry for the young boy thus, resulting on that decision.

"Yes, she wanted to take them in," Calix exhaled a sigh, recalling the unpleasantness of the decades-old memories, "But, Dad and Mom coaxed her not to. My grandfather also refused to acknowledge that boy as his child."

Leslie pursed her lips, continuing to listen to Calix. The rustling leaves cast swaying shadows on his face but, she sensed the melancholy coming from the usually jovial CEO Xu.

Certainly, Old Master Xu’s betrayal ruined his own image. If not, Calix wouldn’t hold on to his hatred even after decades had passed.

"To be honest... until now I can’t understand why he did that. My grandfather wasn’t a womanizer much less a drinker. He was known as a very strict man. But, everything changed after he retired."

Throwing his gaze toward the main building of the ancestral home, Calix’s dispirited voice echoed in the air. Most rooms still had their lights on, showing everyone was still in their festivity mood.

"I think he got bored then, plunging into his desires. He didn’t really pay for what he had done since Grandma easily pardoned him. He didn’t apologize to her but, still got her forgiveness."

After the woman and the child were forcefully relocated abroad, Old Master Xu tried to return everything to normal but, he had done irreversible damage.

Andrian only focused on Old Madam Xu while Calix distanced himself from the old man. Harper also put her whole attention on her heartbroken mother-in-law.

Vernon was already busy preparing himself to join the military academy two years later thus, he wasn’t that affected. As for Evelyn, she was still a toddler who understood nothing about the situation.

"My grandfather... he wasn’t that regretful. He was too egoistic to admit that he was wrong. That’s also the reason why I can’t bring myself to treat him like before, even after his death."

No words followed the end of Calix’s last sentence. Murkiness lurked beneath his calm countenance, giving only a little hint of his troubled heart.

Leslie also said nothing. Her mind was bombarded with chaotic thoughts, wondering whether she should voice them out to Calix or not.

"Does your family still assist the woman and that boy? I mean, after your grandfather’s death?"

Leslie’s curiosity was answered by a shake of Calix’s head. He quietly replied verbally, "My dad tried looking for them but, my late grandfather’s close aid said he stopped funding them for years."

"Huh?" Leslie was perplexed, surprised to hear the turn of the story, "Then, what happened to them? They didn’t try reaching out?"

Once again Calix shook his head, shrugging, "I heard that woman moved far away but, still abroad. Now, we don’t care about it anymore."

Leslie blinked, a sense of dread tugging her heart. She couldn’t be at ease after listening to everything Calix had just told her.

What if that woman or that boy, now turned into a man, returned in the future?

It wouldn’t be weird if they wanted to take revenge on the Xu family. Such scenarios happen too often in this kind of plotline.

’No. This can’t happen!’

Shuddering in fright, Leslie silently wished to receive information about this storyline soon like how she learned about Violet’s blackmailing case. Of course, only if her guesses were correct.

Calix raised his brows, thinking why suddenly Leslie looked a little scared after showing her concern. His story about his late grandfather shouldn’t have any horror elements ah.

Oh...

A thought abruptly struck Calix’s mind. He forgot to mention it when they were talking about Gerard earlier.

"Leslie, did Gerard say anything else? I mean, aside from my grandfather’s matter?"

Calix’s question pulled Leslie’s attention back to him. Tilting her head, she slowly registered his inquiry in her mind.

"Anything else other than that matter?" Leslie frowned slightly, thinking back to the situation involving Gerard, "About what, to be more specific?"

Knowing how spiteful Gerard was, he might bring up that matter as well.

A headache threatened Calix. He hadn’t informed Leslie of an important part of his past. Even though they didn’t get married out of love, she had to know.

Calix didn’t want Leslie to hear it from anyone else but, when should he tell her?

"Well, about me," Calix replied hesitantly. He paused before slowly resuming, "Not about me trying to cheat on you, but... never mind, just forget what I asked."

Leslie stared at Calix in confusion when he suddenly changed his mind. He lowered his head, randomly scratching the back of his neck.

"Enough for tonight," Calix put on a smile, looking a bit forceful, "Let’s head back. We need to go to the cemetery at seven."

"Okay. I’m sleepy too. Let’s go back."

Leslie dropped the subject, unwilling to make Calix feel uncomfortable after everything he opened up to her tonight. Perhaps, there was something else plaguing his mind but, he couldn’t be frank about it.

Well, she was not the only one with secrets here.

"It’s almost eleven," Calix glanced at his wristwatch. Pulling his legs up, he placed both soles on the branch, "I’ve had enough of humoring my relatives today. Let me sleep in peace."

"Hehe, be patient ah. They’ll return home tomorrow."

While Leslie floated down from the tree, Calix resorted to jumping. She smiled in helplessness at the sight of his smug look.

With the moonlight shining on their backs, stretching their shadows over, Leslie and Calix made their way to the main building. The tension caused by their previous conversation dissipated, mellowing like the flowers’ fragrance.

Still...

Leslie was unable to completely push everything to the back of her mind. Even if she didn’t want to think about it, the mysterious disappearance of that woman and her child – Calix’s uncle, cast shadows of doubts within her.
