Chapter 109: Morning of the Qingming Day
Tomorrow morning, Qingming Day.
At a little over seven, the main branch and the branch families of the Xu family headed to the cemetery. Old Madam Xu and a few other elderly stayed at home due to their fragile state.
Everyone within Calix’s family went there by riding the same executive van aside from him who drove by himself. Behind the van and CEO Xu’s car, more vehicles of their relatives followed.
Leslie was curious why Calix didn’t join his family in the van. She asked him as the car was leaving Phoenix Heights behind. His answer pleasantly surprised her.
"I won’t join their picnic after cleaning the tombs. I told Mom and Dad that I wanna check on you, my wife at home. They immediately gave permission."
"What a sneaky act! You just don’t want to entertain them any longer, right?" Leslie wiggled her brows, staring at Calix with a smirk.
Calix cackled, not feeling sorry at all. He briefly looked at Leslie before focusing on the road ahead of him.
"I’ve told the caretaker to leave at ten. The house will be empty. Edward plans to bring Uncle Raymond and Aunt Wendy out soon. His dog will stay in the annex."
Calix contacted Edward this morning, asking what his plans for the holiday were. The younger man swiftly told him that he wanted to take his uncle and aunt for an outing so, any job Calix had for him had to wait.
Huh! Couldn’t he think better of his boss? He wasn’t a tyrant, okay?
Leslie’s eyes sparkled with delight, still looking at Calix’s side profile. Trying to suppress her excitement, she asked, "Then... does it mean I’m free to do anything later? Without people thinking the house is haunted?"
"Hahaha! Were you that bored the past two days?" Calix guffawed at Leslie’s questions, unintentionally thinking how cute they were, "Yeah, there’ll be no one aside from us. You can do anything you want."
A hint of pink spread on Leslie’s cheeks but, she was not offended by Calix’s laughter. Even though she loved going around the Xu family’s ancestral home, she still needed to be careful with her actions.
Calix’s family, their relatives and the huge number of staff meant more eyes within the same compound. Any one of them might see an item floating in the air if she acted without thinking.
Leslie had to be extra cautious if she wanted to touch anything. The only safe place for her to do that was Calix’s bedroom. But, staying there all day long bored her to death.
"Oh, I forgot," Calix’s laughter faded. He was reminded of something, "How about having a picnic by the pool? Or, do you wanna go to the lake?"
After cleaning their ancestors’ gravesites, people usually headed to the parks or any other places to enjoy the beauty of nature. The spring weather was pleasant enough for outdoor activities and picnics.
But, considering Leslie’s current state, Calix couldn’t bring her to a picnic at public parks. The safe space was the empty Graceville Manor.
"The lake! Well, Aunt Wendy and Uncle Raymond won’t be at home so, I don’t need to be too careful."
Once again laughter spilled out of Calix’s mouth. Shrugging, he replied softly, "Alright. Let’s cook for ourselves. I’ll show you what else I can do."
"Hehe, I’ll take your offer, Chef Xu."
Leslie was happy with Calix’s plan. Even though he initially did this to get out of his relatives’ clutches, the benefits were extended to her as well, much to her delight.
In less than thirty minutes, they reached the cemetery. The gravesite was in the form of a small hill. The ancestors of the main branch were buried on the top while the ones of the branch families were scattered in other places.
A long row of luxury cars lined up before entering the car park. Everyone slowly got out of the vehicles, getting ready to pay respects to their ancestors and clean the burial sites.
"Stay in the car if you don’t want to join," Calix reminded Leslie while unbuckling the seatbelt, "I’ll be there if you wanna look for me."
"Alright. I’ll just stay here," Leslie nodded, following Calix’s words.
CEO Xu immediately locked the car once he got out. Leslie saw him approaching his family’s executive van. They joined everyone who climbed the stairs to head to the burial sites on top of the small hill.
"Hurm... can I still touch things once Calix reaches the hilltop?"
Leslie had no intention of joining everyone there. She felt weird doing nothing when the others were busy cleaning the gravesite and making ritual offerings to the deceased.
Calix, his family and their relatives wouldn’t take a long time performing their tasks. The cemetery was perfectly laid with cement in most areas thus, no wild shrubs and weeds grew.
"Calix’s grandfather... should be there, isn’t it?"
Leslie’s eyes wandered to the top of the hill. She saw the group of people part ways as they headed to where their deceased ancestors were buried. Some were still climbing the stairs, she faintly recognized Calix among them.
Calix’s story from last night still made Leslie uncomfortable. She couldn’t help but think about how would the plot unfold in the future.
As an avid fan of romance novels, Leslie’s tingling sense kept telling her that the mother and son would make their re-appearance. But, it shouldn’t be a long conflict because Calix was not the male lead of this book world.
"Should I warn him?" Leslie frowned, feeling uneasy about keeping quiet about her guesses, "But, I don’t have anything concrete to support my opinions."
Shaking her head, Leslie told herself to be careful with whatever she wanted to say to Calix. Perhaps, a simple warning sufficed for now.
CEO Xu was a smart and cunning man under his playful and easygoing exteriors. Leslie had a feeling that even without her warning, he still expected the mother and son to return someday.
Exhaling a sigh, Leslie sank deeper into the cushion seat. To know whether her guesses were correct or not, she hoped to receive the vision like before.
