Chapter 107: The Truth Behind the Trashy Man’s Accusations
Leslie’s short reply faintly reached Calix but, it was enough to irritate him further. In his mind, he was already slamming Gerard a few times against the sandbag, including kicking the trashy man.
"Haa... That guy and his big mouth. What a pain in the ass."
Shaking his head out of frustration, Calix exhaled a loud sigh. Taking his left hand out of his pants pocket, he randomly massaged the back of his neck, thinking of Gerard’s audacity.
Leslie pursed her lips, suddenly feeling guilty for being honest. Even though Calix’s reaction was mild compared to her expectation, this matter was surely a touchy subject.
"Did he mention about my grandfather... wronging my grandmother?"
Calix’s previous question was enough to say something bad happened between Old Madam Xu and her deceased husband. But, Leslie didn’t dare to question the truth behind the cheating allegations.
Calix noticed the downcast look on Leslie’s face. Sighing once again, he gestured at the pavilion nearby, "Should we sit there and talk?"
Leslie blinked. The pavilion pointed by Calix was an open one. Currently, there were no people around here but, some might come later.
Wouldn’t they gossip next on seeing Calix talking by himself?
Even if Calix pretended to talk over the phone, the content of their conversation might not be safe for anyone to hear.
While thinking, Leslie caught something from the corner of her eyes.
"How about..." Leslie raised one hand, signaling in a direction, "We talk over there?"
Calix’s eyes quickly traced where Leslie was pointing. Stunned, he unconsciously blinked repeatedly. Her index finger gestured at one of the sturdy trees planted in the yard.
"Do you enjoy climbing trees now?" asked Calix followed by laughter, his tone softened from the previous strained one.
"Instead of climbing, I can just fly to the branches," replied Leslie, followed by laughter.
Calix chuckled, amused by Leslie’s response. In the next second, she proved to him by floating upward until she settled on one of the branches. The gentle breeze fluttered the hem of her skirt.
"Come up now!" Leslie waved one hand at Calix, beaming with joy, "Hurry!"
Calix laughed for a second. In the next, he charged toward the tree like a maniac. Jumping up high, he grabbed the branch next to Leslie’s before swinging to land on it.
Leslie was shocked silly watching CEO Xu’s action. How could he grab the branch just by jumping? The towering tree was taller than him!
Sigh... Was this related to him being the male lead’s closest friend?
"Hah! Are you amazed? See, your husband has so many talents ah. You should be proud, Mrs. Xu."
Seeing Leslie’s astonished look, Calix didn’t let go of the chance to boast about his skills. He shrugged, trying to act nonchalant but, his intonation was far from sounding humble.
Leslie narrowed her eyes, "Yeah, yeah, CEO Xu is very skilled in everything! No wonder your grandma had a long list of blind dates for you."
"...cough!"
Sticking out her tongue, Leslie ignored Calix. She tilted up her head, looking at the bright moon through the swaying leaves and twigs.
"That man said," Leslie brought up the subject back. Her tone changed, sounding a little subdued, "Your deceased grandfather cheated on your grandmother. So, you’ll do the same on your comatose wife."
Quietly listening to Leslie, Calix placed his eyes on her face. He leaned against the tree trunk, letting his legs rest on the branch.
"Do you think I’ll do that? Cheating on you?"
Calix’s low voice reached Leslie. Withdrawing her eyes from the moon, she looked at the man. The dancing light and shadows obscured his profile from being seen clearly.
"That’s not important now," Leslie shook her head, "And, for the record, I believe that you won’t."
If Calix had the tendency to commit adultery, why he didn’t do it before? Countless women flocked to him, desiring to catch his attention but none was successful.
Amused, Calix’s chuckle, his countenance softening, "Haha, Mrs. Xu trusts me. I’m flattered."
Leslie rolled her eyes. She continued from where she stopped, "That stupid man also mentioned that you hate your grandfather. He wagged his tongue like he had nothing to lose. I was mad so, I threw stones at him."
Changing his position, Calix brought his feet down the branch, dangling in the air. He sat while facing Leslie.
"I applauded you for throwing rocks at him. It’s just... what he said is true."
Leslie blinked. She was slightly surprised to hear how easily Calix confirmed Gerard’s insults.
Was this the plot setting for his character later in the future Chapters?
A sad background story in the midst of having a happy family?
"About your grandfather... committing adultery? And, about you hating him?" asked Leslie, unconsciously lowering her voice further.
"Both are true," replied Calix, cutting to the chase, "It happened decades ago but, I still can’t forgive him. He broke my grandma’s heart, the woman he swore to love and care for his entire life."
Under Leslie’s confused gaze, Calix started explaining. He wouldn’t bother doing it to anyone else but, she was an exception.
As his wife, she had the right to know. Moreover, this matter was an open secret within the Xu family.
"I was ten when the affair was exposed. My grandfather got involved with a woman more than thirty years his junior. She came to our doorstep with a boy. I think he’s slightly older than me."
Calix still remembered that day. The Xu family’s ancestral home was in chaos. His grandfather denied his connection with that woman but, she had plenty of photos and videos of them together in bed.
The evidence of the adultery was solid.
"My dad insisted on doing a DNA test even though my grandfather objected to it. In the end, the boy is indeed his child with that woman."
That was the first time Calix saw Andrian exploding in anger. His father almost got into a physical fight with his grandfather. Fortunately, his mother and grandmother stopped him in time.
Calix was still a young child but, he was not oblivious. The little boy brought by the young woman was his grandfather’s illegitimate child, just like what happened in some of his friends’ homes.
"I don’t know what my grandfather did afterward. I only heard that he arranged for that woman to live abroad. My grandma made sure he provided financial assistance."
From that day on, none of them heard about that woman and the boy again. Old Master Xu ensured no one knew where he placed them. Andrian and the others also didn’t want to care about it.
Leslie intently listened to Calix’s story, lamenting how messy the situation was caused by a husband’s infidelity. She didn’t expect that he would have this kind of backstory.
Even though this was one of the plots, Calix and everyone were still terribly affected. Their hearts were crushed and their trusts were trampled upon.
Decades went by and Old Master Xu himself had passed away. Yet, the pain remained.
"Your grandma... did she get mad when the affair was first revealed? I meant, got angry like your father?" asked Leslie cautiously, intrigued to know.
Calix didn’t immediately answer Leslie’s question. His gaze on her lingered a moment longer before he finally replied.
"No," Calix’s voice turned huskier, mirroring his troubled heart, "She wanted to accept that woman and that boy... into our family."
