Chapter 106: His Ghost Wife Was a Skilled Stone-Thrower

Once dinner ended, Calix quickly made his escape. He refused to mingle with his relatives until late at night, not when he had had enough of them for today. He sneaked out from the group when everyone walked down the hallway.

Calix made his way to the backyard, wishing to get some fresh air before heading to the bedroom. Along the way, he spotted Gerard and a few of his distant relatives.

"Urgh... What bad luck. I don’t want to see him," complained Calix under his breath.

Gerard arrived before tea time. Calix didn’t mind it at all. He pretended not to see the annoying man when they crossed paths earlier today, unwilling to hear Gerard’s snarky remarks.

That guy was as insufferable as ever.

Gerard was too deep into his jealousy to see that his abilities were minuscules compared to Calix’s. Everyone in the huge Xu family knew about it, including Gerard’s parents who always scolded him.

In Calix’s eyes, Gerard had the tiniest possibility to change for the better. Thus, he didn’t want to be associated with the intolerable man more than necessary.

Calix turned around, intending to go elsewhere. But, he stopped short when out of a sudden, Gerard’s shouts broke the peace in the air.

’Isn’t that Gerard? Did he see a ghost or what?’

Instead of being driven there with the instinct to help, Calix headed there out of curiosity. He wanted to see what made Gerard scream like a child scared by ghosts in the haunted house.

Calix didn’t expect his random thought to come true.

Turned out, Leslie was throwing rocks at him. Gerard got hit by the stones a few times before he ran away in fright. His cowardly self fled as if nightmarish ghosts were haunting him.

But...

Haha... Leslie actually fit the bill ah.

Shaking his head, Calix looked around the yard before approaching Leslie. She hadn’t noticed his presence. The pavilion nearby kind of hid him, enveloping him in its shadows.

No one was in sight. The cowardly Gerard wouldn’t return here after being scared off like that. Thus, Calix finally made his way toward Leslie.

"Hey, were you having fun?"

Calix’s voice stunned Leslie. Blinking her eyes, she stiffly turned her head around before her gaze collided with his.

When did this man come? Did he see what she was doing just now?

Or, worse... did he hear what that scumbag said? The matter about his late grandfather?

Leslie’s brain froze. She said nothing, not after Calix finally stood in front of her. His back was facing the main building thus, no one could see his face even if they walked passed the area.

"Why? Too speechless to speak?" teased Calix, his lips curled into a lop-sided grin.

Alarmed, Leslie stuttered when she replied to Calix, "S-since when are you here?"

Calix laughed at the sight of Leslie’s panicked look. She resembled the students who got caught red-handed doing naughty stuff by their disciplinary teacher.

"I saw you throwing stones at him," Calix’s eyes moved from Leslie’s face to the stones she aimed at Gerard earlier, "Wow~ I’ve never thought of you as a skilled stone-thrower."

"..."

From panicking, Leslie narrowed her gaze and stared impassively at Calix. He made it so obvious that he wanted to tease her.

"Hahaha! Don’t stand there ah. Come, follow me."

"...yes."

Calix turned around, heading further into the backyard. A pouting Leslie tagged along. Her intrusive thought told her that the spot in the middle of his neck might be perfect as a target.

Should she pick up some more stone for target practice?

"Walk next to me," Calix said without looking back, "Lest you throw a stone at me."

Leslie grimaced. She couldn’t help but wonder if CEO Xu suddenly gained a mind-reading skill.

"Yes, yes."

Sighing, Leslie flew a bit before landing her feet on the ground once she reached Calix. The man’s faint laughter kept echoing.

The two of them didn’t talk, letting the tranquility of the night envelop them in bliss. They were slowly leaving the merriment behind. Everyone was still having fun inside the main building of the ancestral home.

Putting her hands behind her back, Leslie threw her gaze around. Even though this was not her first time here, she enjoyed watching the breathtaking landscape.

Calix eventually stopped when they reached the stream. Standing by the waterway, he put both hands into the pockets of his pants.

The pond was on the far side on their left. The glimmering moonlight shone on the clear water, leaving sparks in its wake.

"Leslie, why did you aim for that guy? Throwing stones at him," asked Calix. He was smiling but, his tone had a hint of strain than usual, "Did he talk bad about you? About you being in a coma?"

Calix still remembered how Gerard tried to degrade Leslie’s reputation before. He couldn’t help but think that she accidentally caught the trashcan talking badly about her.

Calix hadn’t heard Gerard insulting Leslie today but, the scummy man might do it when he was not around.

Everyone knew Gerard was not one to mince his words. He disrespected his own parents, not afraid of receiving ire. The scumbag only toned down when the higher-ranked elders were around.

Urgh! If he was there, Gerard would have it worse!

Should he drag that scum to the battleground?

Calix didn’t mind hauling Gerard to spar with him even though the weakling only possessed less than a quarter of his physical strength. He couldn’t do it last time because they were in the office.

Leslie blinked, never thought that would be Calix’s question. Looking up, her eyes met his. The man’s displeasure toward Gerard was crystal clear.

"He did talk ill about our marriage," replied Leslie hesitantly but, intending not to hide anything from Calix, "And... he also badmouthed your deceased grandfather."

Initially, Leslie wanted to relay the moment when Gerard said Old Master Xu was rotting in hell. Yet, she didn’t have the heart to parrot his words.

Calix flinched. Wrinkling his brows, all kinds of thoughts flocked to his mind. A nasty feeling crept into his head.

There was something wrong with the way Leslie was staring at him. He unconsciously clenched his hands into fists, hidden under the pants pockets.

"Did he mention about my grandfather... wronging my grandmother?"

For the first time, Leslie saw the blazing fury lurking in Calix’s eyes. He was still smiling but, weirdly it appeared so sinister.

Despite that, Leslie nodded.

"...yes, he did."
