Chapter 105: Talking Bad About the Dead
Chapter 105: Talking Bad About the Dead
Leslie heard a few interesting things while lingering in the dining hall. The relatives gossiped among themselves while some of the older ones dared ask Calix about his choice of marrying the neglected young lady of the Li family.
"If you didn’t favor any of the blind dates, you should tell your aunt here. I have a good candidate for you."
"Why did you pick her? Isn’t she still in a coma? What if she stays like that forever?"
"If you want someone from the Li family, shouldn’t you pick their second young miss? If I’m not mistaken, her name is Gladys."
More and more questions were thrown at Calix. Leslie wanted to laugh out loud but, she didn’t want to hear him nagging at her later. Even now, he subtly glared in her direction whenever he could.
CEO Xu’s defense skills were exemplary. He successfully dodged every question about his sudden marriage but, it didn’t mean he enjoyed prolonging it.
Leslie faintly sensed that Calix was getting tired of it.
Sigh... Surrounded by the annoying and gossipmonger relatives could drain even the liveliest person.
Soon, Leslie was bored. Gerard didn’t say much during dinner too thus, she decided to step out of the dining hall. Perhaps, this problematic cannon fodder didn’t dare to stir anything because Old Madam Xu and the other elders were there.
Leslie approached Calix. While tapping on his right shoulder, she said, "I’m going out. Enjoy deflecting the rest of the questions."
"..."
Chuckling, Leslie hurriedly flew out of the dining hall. Even though she couldn’t see Calix’s entire face, his unpleasantness was so obvious.
Aye aye, he only needed to keep up the facade until tomorrow.
Leslie returned to the backyard, her favorite place in the Xu family’s ancestral home. Her gaze spotted one of the traditional-style pavilions.
Instead of taking shelter inside the gazebo, Leslie chose to sit on the roof. She loved trying things she didn’t have a chance to do before.
The night breeze was cool, infused with the lovely fragrance of the flowers.
"Mimo, aren’t you bored there? You don’t want to follow me here?"
Leslie’s soft voice quietly echoed, speaking to Mimo who stayed at Graceville Manor. She already asked the crochet fox toy to follow her but, Mimo refused.
|I’m okay, Leslie. I’m guarding your body here! Do you have fun today?|
As usual, Mimo was quick to reply to Leslie. Its childlike tone echoed in her mind, reminding her of Calliope’s milky voice.
"I’m quite bored. I can’t wait to return there," Leslie didn’t point out that the comatose lady’s body was not hers yet. She threw her gaze to the sky, "I’m sitting on the rooftop now. The air feels so nice here. The view is prettier too."
Under the faint luster of the moonlight, Leslie continued chatting with Mimo. She told the fox toy what she had been doing tonight and the plans for tomorrow.
"The Li family will come here soon. They’ll have dinner with Calix’s family. I hope it’ll end soon. Oh, Mimo, can I still talk to you telepathically if I go outside of this country? You know that I’ll follow Calix to Rome in a few days."
Leslie shared the plan with Mimo the other day. But, she forgot to ask the important question.
|Of course, you can! Leslie, have fun over there. Later, you can tell Poppy what you do. Didn’t you say Rome is a beautiful place?|
"Hehe, how convenient," Leslie chuckled, her countenance softening, "Yeah, I wanna tell Poppy."
Leslie had clarified with Mimo. The fox toy said Calliope didn’t have memories of her previous life. Even though the fact saddened Leslie, it was actually a blessing in disguise.
If not, Calliope might be scared of being in a completely unfamiliar place. She would definitely wonder when her mother would appear.
"Argh! Don’t nag at me ah! It’s the truth! He’ll cheat on his wife soon ah! Like his dead grandfather!"
The harsh intonation and words surprised Leslie. She abruptly looked down, spotting a few people walking in the backyard.
Gerard!
One of them was the cannon fodder!
"Has the dinner ended? Seems like it."
Leslie bid farewell to Mimo. Gerard’s sudden presence here piqued her interest. Usually, a delusional and envious cannon fodder would talk trash about the person he was jealous of.
In this case, it was Calix instead of the male lead Xander.
Leslie jumped from the roof, hovering in the air. She approached the men, once again her gossip sense tingling.
"Hey, Gerard, don’t talk bad about the deceased," said one of the men, scowling in displeasure, "We’re going to clean the tombs tomorrow. What if something nasty happens to you?"
"To hell with that!" Gerard glared at the man who warned him. His eyes glowered with viciousness, "You guys keep praising him. I’ll say it again. Calix will repeat what his dead grandfather had done."
A frown marred Leslie’s forehead, wondering why Gerard brought up the deceased Old Master Xu in the conversation. She didn’t quite catch what he said the first time he shouted in anger just now.
"Tsk tsk, you and your blind envy," said the other men, clearly disapproving of Gerard’s jealous feat right now, "Haven’t you had enough? Every time we meet you, you only talk about Calix. Argh, I’m leaving."
"Me too."
"Wasting my time."
"Hey! Where are you going? Come back, you rascals!"
Gerard yelled as the other men turned their backs on him, heading to the main building. None of them stopped or replied to the former.
"Urgh!"
Gerard kicked the stone near his foot. The little rock landed among the grass not far from where Leslie was standing. He didn’t know a soul was watching him intently.
"Huh! There’s no ghost in this age ah! The dead old man’s rotting in hell. Have they forgotten? He cheated on his wife with a barely legal woman?"
Leslie blinked, unconsciously parting her mouth out of astonishment. The statement that came along with insults toward the deceased Old Master Xu swept her with surprise.
Did she accidentally learn the Xu family’s secret?
Calix’s deceased grandfather had an affair with a young woman, really?
Leslie’s brows wrinkled. She was too stunned to give any other reaction. Her sharp gaze was focused on Gerard. He was still talking to himself, venting out his frustration.
"He said he hates that dead old man but, just you wait ah. He’ll cheat on his useless wife! Well, he was cheated on before so... ouch!"
Gerard yelled in pain. A stinging sensation came from his shoulder. Looking down, he saw a stone bounce to the ground.
"A rock? Ah!"
Another stone hit him. This time, his chest was attacked by a bigger pebble.
"Hey! Who dares? Come out! Ouch! S-stop!"
His neck, arms, thighs and chest were targeted by more stones. Gerard cursed out loud, looking around the area before a realization struck him.
There was no hiding place nearby! Not even a small bush! No one could hide behind the flower beds and the open pavilions!
So, who...
As fear clouded Gerard’s mind, one stone thrust through the air, coming from the open area opposite him. The pebble hit the middle of his forehead.
"Ouch! S-stop! Old Master, please! Forgive me!"
Only ghosts could do this! They didn’t need any place to hide!
"F-forgive me!"
Before Gerard fled, he got hit by two more stones. He cowardly rushed to the main building.
"Hah! Who told you to talk so big?"
A mad Leslie stood with both hands on her hips. Her piercing eyes landed on Gerard’s back until the scaredy cat successfully got inside the house. She didn’t notice that someone was watching her from afar.
"What the heck was she doing?" muttered Calix in disbelief.
