Chapter 104: The Gossiping Relatives

Chapter 104: The Gossiping Relatives

At nine on the next morning, the branch families started to appear one by one at the Xu family’s ancestral home. More vehicles were parked in the garage while the others left after dropping the people off.

The atmosphere of the massive traditional courtyard home became livelier with more people—adults and children—gathering there. Animated chatter and joyous laughter blended together, harmonizing in the air.

The maids and other attendants were preoccupied from the crack of dawn. Among them all, the kitchen team was the busiest one. They needed to prepare enough food for tens of people including the main branch.

"Wow~ So lively."

A carefree Leslie floated in the air, wandering around the giant mansion. She didn’t feel like following CEO Xu today.

Calix and the rest of his family—main branch—gathered in one of the drawing rooms. They entertained the visiting relatives. Some of them scattered to other places within the mansion.

"I bet he’s dying inside now. Hah! Serves him right," uttered Leslie without an ounce of sympathy toward the suffering CEO Xu.

Calix’s words before he left the bedroom this morning resonated in Leslie’s mind.

"I won’t bother myself with them much. Just for the sake of formality. Urgh... I can sense them bombing me with questions about our marriage. Whether I answer or not, both are so annoying."

Leslie’s had a perfect answer for Calix’s complaint.

"All the best, CEO Xu. The missiles will only aim at you. How nice~ No relatives can bother me."

Leslie’s merry laughter bounced in the air once Calix scowled. Before he continued grumbling, she happily waved at him as she floated out of the room instead of walking.

According to Calix, the branch families would stay on the west side of the mansion. A few of them only visited during the day before leaving at night.

Qingming fell on tomorrow, the fourth of April. Everyone would gather at the Xu family’s cemetery in the morning, getting ready to clean the tombs in general.

Right now, the relatives were spreading out. Some chose to play board games or enjoy tea and snacks inside the building while others took a stroll or played games outdoors.

"...fight again with Calix. Have you heard that?"

A certain someone’s name caught Leslie’s attention when she was lying under a tree in the backyard. Her signal for gossip tingled, prompting her to rise from the ground.

Not far from where Leslie was, she saw a group of young men chilling at one of the garden pavilions. It seemed like they had just reached there. The place was empty when she first arrived at the tree.

"Are they Calix’s second cousins? Or, just distant relatives?"

Leslie didn’t try to know anyone’s names. There was no point for her to do that when she couldn’t even interact with them.

Being a soul had its own advantages. She didn’t have to deal with the relatives like Calix. No one would nag her for doing so.

Well, except for CEO Xu. Leslie was absolutely sure that Calix would vent out his frustration at her later.

"Hahaha! Do you mean after Calix got married?"

"Yes! Yes! I heard Gerard trying to pick a fight in front of everyone[1]. He said Calix was so pitiful because his new wife’s in a coma. Calix quickly put him down."

"Didn’t he run away in shame? Gosh! That Gerard’s still full of delusion!"

Leslie raised her brows, wondering what the men were talking about.

"What did they say? Someone ran away in shame?"

That line was enough to heighten Leslie’s gossip signal to the peak. She hurriedly flew away from the tree, approaching the pavilion.

Once Leslie got there, she hovered above the gossiping men, crossing both arms over her chest. Her long hair fell from her shoulders, hanging just inches away from one of the men.

If this was a horror movie, they would run away in fright once they saw her dangling from above.

A young man in a dark green shirt whispered, his tone sounding so conspiratorial.

"Gerard tried to humiliate Calix. You know that his wife’s still in a coma right? He made up stories of Calix forcing himself on his unconscious wife for their first night. Worst, he said that when others were around."

"W-what? That’s crazy!"

"I know that he’s delusional but, isn’t this too far?"

Leslie’s jaw dropped in shock. Wide-eyed in surprise, she instantly wondered about the intelligence of this man named Gerard.

Who was this man?

Was he a low-level cannon fodder for Calix’s story in this novel?

Leslie tried to recall anyone named Gerard but, nothing came to her mind yet. Perhaps, he was supposed to appear in the later Chapters, the ones she hadn’t read yet.

"Then, what’s Calix’s reply?"

"Yeah, yeah, what did he say? He’s not someone easy to be messed around ah."

Leslie focused back on the gossiping men. She wanted to know too. Considering Calix’s chaotic personality, Gerard might receive a blow in response.

The man in the green shirt guffawed. His blaring laughter broke the serenity of the nearby surroundings.

"Hehe, Calix said the first night isn’t just about consummating. Gerard used his small dick to think so, no wonder."

"Hahaha! That’s so like Calix!"

"Ah! If only someone recorded Gerard’s shameful act!"

The others laughed out loud while Leslie was flooded in disbelief. She quickly marked the guy named Gerard as idiotic cannon fodder.

"I really wanna see him once," Leslie shook her head in helplessness, "He might cause trouble later during this gathering, won’t he?"

Leslie was intrigued by this cannon fodder’s existence. She recalled the first time she visited Xu International’s cafeteria[2]. The staff mentioned someone addressed as Vice Director Xu fled in shame after trying to humiliate Calix.

"Seems like they’re the same person."

Shrugging, Leslie moved away from the pavilion. The young men continued to gossip but, the story was not about Calix anymore. She better made it her mission to find Gerard.

Leslie’s wish came true later during dinner. She finally knew which one was Gerard. Calix stared at her in confusion at the sight of her snickering but, he couldn’t openly ask her.

"Have your meal with them," Leslie chuckled, winking at Calix, "I’m just here for family drama."

"..."

As the heir and member of the main family, Calix sat with his parents, siblings, sister-in-law and niece at the front of the huge table together with Old Madam Xu.

Many plates of dishes were served on the wooden surface, especially cooked for the huge family dinner. Mouth-watering fragrance wafted in the air, enticing people’s appetites.

They gathered inside a hall instead of the usual dining room to accommodate the large number of people.

"Who wants more tea?"

"Sarah will start her first year in uni soon. How about your Matthew?"

"We planned to build tiny houses on that land plot. Just a small venture."

Leslie floated to where Gerard was sitting when everyone started talking. He sat quite further down the table.

In Leslie’s opinion, Gerard was quite good-looking. But, she was repulsed by the disdainful look he always wore on his face. Only negative vibes came from this man.

He seemed troublesome.
